In her second solo exhibition at the Michèle Schoonjans Gallery, Amélie Scotta presents a series of works exploring the notions of habitat and landscape through colour and organic materials, brought to life through both drawing (wood, bark, rock, etc.) and paper (mineral, vegetable, etc.). In the Withdraw series, the artist works in two stages, superimposing two layers of drawing and two types of perspective. The first layer, applied quickly and randomly across the entire surface of the paper in coloured ink, can evoke the atmospheric dimension of a landscape. The bright, unnatural colours and the invisibility of the gesture give the impression of a luminous, radiant surface. Here and there, accidents of material accentuate the effect of a printed image that has been doctored, washed out and deteriorated. The second layer, drawn in graphite, somehow constrains, obstructs or limits these infinite expanses. Created slowly and meticulously in pencil, the motifs of trellis, wire netting and other barriers reflect the artist's preoccupation with the question of confinement. The idea of withdrawal, whether voluntary or not, has already been evoked in earlier works, notably the Reclusoirs, sculptures inspired by the small enclosed buildings in which penitents lived in the Middle Ages. But the contrast between the immateriality of the coloured surface and the repetitive pattern of the drawing also speaks to us of what is said beyond the edge of the paper. ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Nantes in 1983, Amélie Scotta is a visual artist and teacher based in Brussels. She holds degrees in Design (HEAR Strasbourg, 2008) and Visual Arts (ENSAV La Cambre, Brussels, 2016). Since 2013, her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in Belgium (Le Botanique, La Médiatine, Vanderborght Building, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, European Parliament, etc.) and abroad (Villa Méditerranée in Marseille, Arabic Culture House in Berlin, Matadero in Madrid, as well as Magasins Généraux, Palais de Tokyo and Carreau du Temple in Paris). She has also held residencies at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, the Moonens Foundation and the Boghossian Foundation in Brussels. She is the winner of the Prix international de la Ville de Tournai in 2021, the Prix Cocof and the Prix Carré sur Seine in 2020. From the Jeddah Tower to the disused factories of Roubaix, from the Rio stadium to the Versailles of the people, from medieval recluses to the scaffolding of Brussels, it is in an intuitive way that the artist questions architecture in all its forms. Approached primarily through drawing, but also through sculpture and photography, construction allows her to speak of the human being, the one who both inhabits and builds. In more recent works, Amélie Scotta takes a more sensorial approach to landscape and habitat, working with colour and materials. Dans sa deuxième exposition personnelle à la Michèle Schoonjans Gallery, Amélie Scotta présente une série d’œuvres explorant les notions d’habitat et de paysage au travers de la couleur ou de matières organiques, amenées aussi bien par le dessin (bois, écorce, roche…) que par le support du papier (minéral, végétal…). Dans la série Withdraw, la dessinatrice travaille en deux temps, superposant deux couches de dessin et deux types de perspectives. La première strate, appliquée à l’encre colorée, de manière rapide et aléatoire sur toute la surface du papier, peut évoquer un paysage dans sa dimension atmosphérique. Les couleurs vives, non naturelles et l’invisibilité du geste donnent l’impression d’une surface lumineuse et irradiante. Çà et là, des accidents de matière accentuent l’effet d’image imprimée qui aurait été trafiquée, délavée, détériorée. La seconde strate, dessinée au graphite, vient en quelque sorte contraindre, obstruer ou limiter ces étendues infinies. Réalisés au crayon, de manière lente et minutieuse, les motifs de treillis, de grillages et autres barrières nous renvoient à la préoccupation de l’artiste pour la question de l’enfermement. Le repli, volontaire ou non, est déjà évoqué dans des travaux antérieurs, notamment les Reclusoirs, des sculptures inspirées des petits édifices clos dans lequel vivaient des pénitentes du Moyen-âge. Mais ce contraste entre l’immatérialité de la surface colorée et le motif répétitif du dessin, nous parle aussi de ce qui se raconte au-delà du bord du papier. Abordée principalement par le dessin, mais aussi par la sculpture ou la photographie, la construction lui permet de parler de l’humain, celui qui, tout à la fois, habite et édifie. Dans des travaux plus récents, Amélie Scotta approche le paysage et l’habitat de manière plus sensorielle, en passant par un travail de la couleur et de la matière. Elle y aborde la question du repli, une position face au monde qui peut apporter protection, enfermement ou libération. Son rapport à l’urbanisme l’amène également de plus en plus vers des projets dans l’espace public.

In haar tweede solotentoonstelling in de Michèle Schoonjans Gallery presenteert Amélie Scotta een serie tekeningen die, naast de problematiek van de leefomgeving, de landschapsconcepten onderzoekt door middel van kleur of organische materialen, die zowel door het onderwerp van de tekening als door de papieren drager (mineraal, plantaardig, enz.) worden ingebracht. In de serie Withdraw werkt de kunstenares in twee fasen, waarbij ze gebruik maakt van verschillende lagen in de tekening en van twee soorten perspectief. De eerste laag, die snel en willekeurig met gekleurde inkt over het hele papieroppervlak wordt aangebracht, kan de atmosferische dimensie van een landschap oproepen. De heldere, onnatuurlijke kleuren en de afwezigheid van het gebaar geven de indruk van een lichtgevend, stralend oppervlak. Hier en daar accentueren ongelukjes met het materiaal het effect van een afgedrukte afbeelding, die is bewerkt, uitgewassen of beschadigd. De laag grafiet, die in een later stadium wordt aangebracht, beperkt, belemmert of begrenst op de een of andere manier deze oneindige uitgestrektheid. De grafiettekeningen, die langzaam en minutieus met potlood zijn gemaakt, tonen rasterwerk, hekken en andere barrières en weerspiegelen de preoccupatie van de kunstenaar met het vraagstuk van zich opgesloten te voelen. Het idee van zich terugtrekken, vrijwillig of niet, werd al opgeroepen in eerdere werken, met name de Reclusoirs, sculpturen geïnspireerd op de kleine afgesloten gebouwen waarin boetelingen in de Middeleeuwen leefden. Maar dit contrast tussen de niet-materiële aard van het gekleurde oppervlak en het repetitieve patroon van de tekening spreekt ook tot ons over wat er voorbij de rand van het papier gebeurt, in wat bekend staat als het buitenbeeld. Dans les arts du spectacle, les marionnettes et les masques sont des outils pour les acteurs afin de donner vie aux personnages. Dans l'ancienne utilisation cérémoniale de ces objets, ils étaient destinés à habiter une "âme", à la loger comme un vaisseau et à lui permettre de revivre une fois de plus. Le travail de Matt marche sur la ligne entre ces mondes. Même immobiles en exposition, son objectif est que les masques et les objets donnent l'impression d'être vivants. Le résultat souhaité nécessite un processus sensible de sculpture de leurs expressions subtiles, combiné au choix des matériaux. Il utilise le bois, le papier, des colles organiques et de l'argile car il croit que ces matériaux portent une vibration de vie qui peut être perçue par un public. Hébergée dans l'inspirant espace de la Project(ion) Room, l'œuvre habitera différents lieux pour créer un environnement dans lequel on peut déambuler, explorer et contempler. La plupart des pièces proviennent de la collection personnelle de Matt, telles que des masques en papier et des marionnettes en frêne, bien que plusieurs objets soient empruntés à d'anciens clients. Des grandes impressions photographiques de son travail par Teis Albers sont également exposées. Le dimanche 19 et le lundi 20, les œuvres prendront littéralement vie lors de deux performances spécifiques au site et largement improvisées. Certaines créations sont utilisées par le maître marionnettiste Kanroku à Osaka, Japon ; la compagnie Ulrike Quade à Amsterdam, Pays-Bas ; Créa-Théâtre à Tournai, Belgique, et bien d'autres encore. Ses recherches personnelles portent sur l'utilisation de matériaux et de méthodes organiques/non toxiques. Et une prise de conscience de la durabilité dans les arts l'inspire également à travailler avec des "objets trouvés" qui donnent un élément d'imprévisibilité à son processus de conception. <div>La galerie Michèle Schoonjans a le plaisir de présenter “Geometry &amp; Colours : Gio Ponti”, la première exposition personnelle de Bea Sarrias à la galerie.&nbsp; L’ouverture de cette exposition coïncidera avec l’inauguration de l’agrandissement de la galerie, les travaux étant réalisés par le studio Zazie Maquet (architecte &amp; design intérieur). Pour l’exposition “Geometry &amp; Colours : Gio Ponti” Sarrias se concentre sur la capture de l’essence de la lumière, de la couleur et des textures des matériaux avec lesquels travaillait le grand architecte et designer milanais Gio Ponti (1891-1979), qui en utilisant la géométrie comme outil de composition, est associé comme un symbole de la modernité. Dans le cadre de cet accrochage, l’artiste adopte une approche créative innovatrice en permettant à ses tableaux de se combiner, de telle manière que de nouvelles compositions peuvent se créer. La plupart des dimensions des tableaux sont des multiples de 3, facilitant ainsi leur combinaison. De plus, des œuvres pentaptyques et triptyques sont mises en avant, invitant les spectateurs à explorer et à expérimenter la disposition des œuvres, générant ainsi leur propre interprétation visuelle. Gio Ponti, humaniste du design et créateur de la mythique revue Domus, confiait : “L’élément le plus résistant, ce n’est pas le ciment, le bois, la pierre, l’acier, le verre. L’élément le plus résistant dans la construction, c’est l’art.” Et c’est avec cet esprit poétique qu’il a conçu ce qui est considéré comme son œuvre majeure, la Villa Planchart (1953-1957), à Caracas (Venezuela), où chaque détail de la maison, du mobilier jusqu’à la vaisselle, est une manifestation indubitable de son génie créateur. Cette villa est conçue comme la matérialisation de la philosophie pontienne de l’habitation, réputée comme la synthèse des arts. Et Sarrias portraitise et joue avec la Villa Planchart. L’inspiration de Sarrias, dans l’architecture et le design de cette villa, est sa manière de rendre hommage à Gio Ponti, elle capture l’essence et la vision créative de l’architecte milanais dans son propre travail artistique. L’exposition établit un dialogue visuel entre la géométrie, la couleur et l’architecture moderne, invitant les visiteurs à explorer l’interconnexion entre ces disciplines artistiques. En complément aux toiles, l’exposition inclut un tableau en forme d’écran. Le réalisateur, Morrosko Vila-San-Juan a créé pour l’occasion une pièce audiovisuelle, établissant un tête à tête entre l’œuvre picturale de Bea Sarrias et les formes et couleurs de Gio Ponti. Une composition abstraite et allégorique qui est une fenêtre sur l’univers sensible et sensoriel du maître des maîtres. A PROPOS DE L’ARTISTE Née en 1978 à Barcelone, Bea Sarrias travaille et vit également dans cette ville.Sarrias est diplômée des beaux-arts et titulaire d'un D.E.A (diplôme d'études supérieures) de l'université de Barcelone. L'artiste a d'abord développé une grande partie de son travail à Barcelone et s'est rapidement intéressée à l'architecture et à la représentation d'espaces emblématiques. L'ensemble de son travail est traité à travers la peinture, en utilisant une technique réaliste qui puise ses principales références dans le réalisme américain du 20ème siècle. Elle s'intéresse particulièrement à la modernité des termes conceptuels et accorde une grande attention au traitement minutieux de la perspective, de la lumière, de la couleur et de la netteté du pinceau en ce qui concerne les termes formels. Ceci est clairement évident dans son travail artistique, qui s'inspire des œuvres d'architectes espagnols tels que José Antonio Coderch, Antonio Bonet Castellana, et d'architectes internationaux tels que Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Pierre Koenig, et Richard Neutra. Ses projets, tous axés sur l’architecture comme expression de la lumière, évoquent le sens de l’habitation malgré l’absence de figures humaines. Sarrias est capable d'évoquer le sens de l'habitation à travers ses représentations d'espaces intérieurs. Cela permet au spectateur d'entrevoir l'intention d'amener les sujets vivants qui ont créé une mémoire du lieu à travers les objets qui composent les scènes. En 2019, l’artiste a réalisé un projet intitulé "INSIDE" pour le nouveau siège de l'OTAN à Bruxelles, dans lequel elle a peint un "portrait" du bâtiment pour capter l'âme des personnes qui y travaillent. En 2023, elle a été invitée, par le gouvernement espagnol à célébrer la présidence espagnole de l'Union européenne, pour réaliser une peinture d'action au siège d’Eurojust (situé à La Haye aux Pays-Bas). Elle a récemment effectué une résidence de deux mois à la Fondation SAFCA à Bruxelles pour travailler sur l'architecture européenne moderne. Sarrias participe à diverses expositions individuelles et collectives ainsi qu'à des actions artistiques à Barcelone, Madrid, New York, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Malmö et Oslo. Dans sa ville natale et à Madrid, ses œuvres ont été bien accueillies par les critiques et les médias locaux qui soulignent son utilisation consciente et fine de la lumière et des ombres. Son travail fait partie de différentes collections privées et institutionnelles telles que la Fondation Mies van der Rohe, l'Open Earth Foundation, l'Eileen Kaminsky Foundation, le siège de l'OTAN et la Fondation SAFFCA. It is estimated that every day, nearly 100 million selfies are taken worldwide. The human desire to display one’s self is universal, hence shared by artists as well. The modern ‘selfie’ has a striking resemblance to the traditional art form of self-portraiture. The self-portrait only appeared in Western art towards the end of the Middle Ages, signifying the artist’s self-awareness. Previously, the artist was viewed as a skilled craftsman who executed orders. The artist’s portrait first became visible in religious and historical works of art, where they presented themselves as a silent witness to events, affirming their signature through their hand. Albrecht Dürer was the first artist to assign great importance to the self-portrait. In an iconic example from 1500, he assumes the pose of Christ as the Redeemer. Dissatisfied with the social position of artists at the time, Dürer portrays himself as a significant figure with creative gifts bordering on the divine. With Romanticism, a new vision of the artist’s identity emerged, and the self-portrait was seen as a mirror of the soul. Expressionists then considered it a way study their emotions, considering the self-portrait a direct confrontation with the self. Throughout art history, the self-portrait has remained an important genre, and even today, it remains indispensable. But why exactly? And in what way does the self-portrait resemble the selfie? The origin of selfies can be traced back to Japanese kawaii culture. In purikura, photo sticker booths, mainly women take pictures and edit them with varied effects to look cute or adorable. Decorative backgrounds, icons, and accessories such as hair extensions and diamond tiaras are used to enhance their appearance. In response to the purikura craze, Japanese and Korean companies started manufacturing mobile phones with front-facing cameras to facilitate taking selfies. With the launch of iPhone 4, selfies became popular worldwide, beyond East Asia. This marked the beginning of a global obsession with enhancing self-presentation in digital photographic form. Although selfies may appear to be more superficial than self-portraits, there is more than meets the eye. In the same way as selfie-takers emphasize their status on social media, artists use self-portraits to determine how they want to be seen. Influencers take selfies in designer outfits to portray themselves as successful members of society, whereas Renaissance artists adorned their self-portraits with costumes and symbols of dignity for the same reason. Apart from being used to manipulate self-image, the self-portrait and the selfie also share a desire inherent in human nature, namely the urge to freeze a piece of one’s life, however artificial, and thus become immortal. In a daily struggle with mortality, it’s a comforting thought for both the selfie-taker and the artist that there is something that will outlast them, that there are things left behind that keep their memory alive. "Selfies” is a dual exhibition that playfully combines self-portraits and selfies. The exhibition showcases intriguing self-portraits of artists that illustrate how they see themselves or how they want to be seen. In addition, the viewer is also invited to contribute to the exhibition. They are encouraged to sit at a table where they can draw their self-portrait using a mirror and then take a selfie with and without their drawn portrait in an ellipse in a photo booth.
