More info about Groningen

A young and vibrant city

With a population whose average age is 36 years, Groningen is quite literally one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands. This youthfulness is everywhere: in the music festivals all year round and in the innovative buildings such as the Groninger forum, a futuristic public library that brings together literature, technology, cinema and a museum all in one place. At Vera, discover the hottest underground pop music culture.

Where old and new meet

The Grote Markt is Groningen’s main square. Here you will find Martinikerk, a 13th century gothic style church as well as the Martinitoren, Groningen’s highest point. Climb to the top for an aerial view of the city. A short distance away is the Groninger museum, a colourful and modern building constructed on the water. Here, exhibitions, new age art as well as older collections trace the history of the city.

Groningen: The jewel of the north

This northern city also possesses natural attractions worth exploring. One can visit and travel beyond the city as part of widely available group excursions. Only 2 hours by train from Amsterdam, Groningen is worth a detour if you are in the Netherlands. If you have a bit more time to spare, Culturius provides suggestions of what to see or where to go to have a richer cultural experience during your travels.
