On 12 July 2022, NASA published images from the James Webb Telescope of galaxies over 10 billion light years away. While our ability to capture the light of ancient galaxies propels us closer to an idea of futurity, it also serves as a reminder that perhaps we are not as far along as we think. Collaborating again for this new creation, South African collective Impilo Mapantsula and Jeremy Nedd dig deeper into topics that navigate entangled avenues of Black diasporic and Afrofuturist experience. They present their exploration through the lens of Pantsula. This powerful dance form, well known for its high-speed virtuosic footwork, gave voice to an entire generation during Apartheid. Focusing on the improvisational potential of Pantsula’s movement vocabulary in response to the cosmic and spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and Bheki Mseleku, the performance draws on phenomena found in the cosmos as metaphoric inspiration: from the birth of a galaxy to the death of a star. Connecting the powerful and lyrical jive style of today’s Pantsula while echoing “past” struggles against oppression, the performers contemplate the compression of space and time, and our illusions of progress towards the future.

Op 12 juli 2022 publiceerde ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA de eerste beelden van de James Webb-telescoop, met sterrenstelsels op meer dan 10 miljard lichtjaar afstand. Hoewel ons vermogen om het licht van eeuwenoude sterrenstelsels vast te leggen ons een idee van toekomst geeft, herinnert het ons er ook aan dat we misschien minder ver staan dan we soms graag denken. Het Zuid-Afrikaanse collectief Impilo Mapantsula en Jeremy Nedd slaan opnieuw de handen in elkaar en verdiepen zich voor deze nieuwe creatie in de zwarte diasporische en Afrofuturistische ervaring. Ze doen dit door middel van Pantsula; een krachtige dansvorm, bekend om zijn razendsnel en virtuoos voetenwerk, die een volledige generatie een stem gaf tijdens de Apartheid. De focus ligt hierbij op het improvisatorisch potentieel van de Pantsula bewegingstaal als een antwoord op de kosmische en spirituele jazz van Alice Coltrane en Bheki Mseleku. De voorstelling haalt inspiratie uit kosmische fenomenen: van de geboorte van een sterrenstelsel tot de dood van een ster. Door de energieke en lyrische jive-stijl van hedendaagse Pantsula te verbinden met echo’s van “vroegere” protesten tegen onderdrukking, staan de performers stil bij de compressie van ruimte en tijd, en onze illusies van vooruitgang richting de toekomst.

Si notre capacité à capter la lumière d’anciennes galaxies nous donne une impression de futur, elle nous rappelle également que nous ne sommes peut-être pas aussi avancé·es que nous le pensons. Collaborant une nouvelle fois ensemble, le collectif sud-africain Impilo Mapantsula et Jeremy Nedd parcourent les voies sinueuses du vécu diasporique et afrofuturiste noir à travers le prisme du pantsula. Danse puissante connue pour son jeu de jambes d’une vélocité virtuose, le pantsula a permis à toute une génération de s’exprimer sous l’apartheid. Set between imaginary collision landscapes, the fragmentary narratives revolve around peculiar characters. They summon angels, ghosts, and reapers as beings to become. Their encounters strive to uncover what has not yet been revealed to them. Drawing inspiration from the strange and the fantastical, the piece sparks contemplation on the nature of loss and memories blending humour and melancholy. The piece explores the traces left behind, serving as tangible testimonies of the presence of absence. The audience is invited to reflect on how we maintain relations with what has vanished, and how these memories affect us as we go along. Im Kanokporn Vorapharuekwhen ashes spiral21:00When ashes spiral, the human self is decentered into a transformative realm - a liminal environment where fluid beings rise, linger, and collapse. This cycle of transformation travels through states of detachment in mind and body. We engage in an animistic outlook in an attempt to free the fixed self to become multiple and changing. Rigid social constructions become watery and energies flow through different forms. How can we seep through the containers of our skin? When seeing the animate and the inanimate as a spectrum, what drifts in between? We celebrate impermanent natures and fleeting identities.

Hun ontmoetingen zijn erop gericht te ontdekken wat nog niet aan hen is onthuld. Het werk haalt inspiratie uit het vreemde en fantastische en zet aan tot nadenken over de aard van verlies en herinneringen, waarbij humor en melancholie samengaan. Het stuk verkent de achtergelaten sporen, die dienen als tastbare getuigenissen van de aanwezigheid van afwezigheid. We gaan een animistisch perspectief aan in een poging om het gefixeerde ik te bevrijden zodat het meervoudig en veranderlijk wordt. Starre sociale constructies worden waterig en energieën stromen door verschillende vormen. Hoe kunnen we door de containers van onze huid heen sijpelen? Als we het bezielde en het onbezielde als een spectrum zien, wat drijft er dan tussenin? We vieren vergankelijke naturen en vluchtige identiteiten.

A pride of lions, an army of ants, a school of fish and my band of lonely objects. As we play we make an epic collage of the perils of bounce houses, baffled objecthood, a series of attempts at belonging and of buoyancy. In lyrics I look for appearances of a heart and it appears the organ is the most majestic instrument.‘Epic collage’ is a musical term and “epic collage artists are commonly defined by their ability to decontextualise recognisable samples (such as vocal stems) and provide them with a seemingly conflicting sonic backdrop which thusly results in a mashup (or mess-up) that strives to be greater than the sum of its parts”.* I am someone to whom they say ‘every time I see a slide I think of you’, and that seems quite decontextualised, and that seems quite a decent place of commencement.In this easygoing tragedy, comedy haunts me and I like to play along. *Adam Harper

In liedjesteksten zoek ik naar verschijningen van een hart en het blijkt dat het orgel/orgaan het meest majestueuze instrument is.'Epische collage' is een muzikale term en "epische collagekunstenaars worden gewoonlijk gedefinieerd door hun vermogen om herkenbare samples (zoals vocale stems) te decontextualiseren en te voorzien van een schijnbaar conflicterende sonische achtergrond, wat dus resulteert in een mashup (of mess-up) die ernaar streeft groter te zijn dan de som der delen".* Ik ben iemand tegen wie men zegt 'elke keer als ik een dia zie, denk ik aan jou', en dat lijkt nogal gedecontextualiseerd, en dat lijkt me een behoorlijk uitgangspunt.In deze ongedwongen tragedie word ik geteisterd door komedie en ik speel graag mee.*Adam Harper
