Eight years after presenting their first duet, Idiot Syncrasy, the Festival will once again feature Igor Urzelai and Moreno Solinas. These two choreographers and dancers have long nurtured links with the pagan traditions of their Basque and Sardinian homelands. Karrasekare (for carnival) is permeated by raw, exalting polyphonic songs and ancestral energies. Ultimately, the show explores the inconsolable mourning of human beings, transfigured into an orgiastic dance rising from the depths of our being. This irrepressible, spirited rise is reminiscent of a gathering of impulses in rondos combining rhythm, images, and the mysteries behind them. A structured, cathartic release.

Karrasekare (voor carnaval) is doorspekt met ruw en nu en dan opzwepend polyfoon gezang en een voorouderlijke energie. Maar bovenal is het een geweeklaag van de mensen die in scène wordt gebracht en uitmondt in een woeste dans die vanuit het diepste van de ziel komt. Een onbedwingbare en schitterende climax opgebouwd uit een aaneenschakeling van pulsen en rondedansen waarin ritme, beelden en de mysteries die hen inspireren met elkaar versmelten. Een gestructureerde en zuiverende bevrijding.

Olivier de Sagazan is a painter, sculptor, and performer whose multifaceted œuvre reflects an obsession with metamorphosis and improbable figures violently ripped away from the normality of appearances. Transfiguration betrays the sculptor’s desire to breathe life into his creation – and his frustration at failing to do so. He enters into the clay himself, covering his body and face with it, abandoning his own identity, and, through his transformations, inventing other identities – animal, hybrid, monstrous. He removes and unravels the layers of his face in an unfettered quest, part ritual, part mockery, part dance, part trance. The sense of wonder and amazement is akin to that experienced when a totally unexpected, aberrant, funny, and wild vision of ourselves is suddenly unveiled.

Schilder, beeldhouwer en performer, Olivier de Sagazan, heeft een veelzijdig œuvre op zijn naam staan, waarin hij steevast teruggrijpt naar de gedaanteverandering en naar onwaarschijnlijke figuren die hardhandig zijn losgerukt uit de normaliteit.Transfiguration vertaalt het verlangen van de beeldhouwer om zijn creatie tot leven te brengen, en ook zijn ongenoegen omdat dit niet lukt. Vervolgens bedekt hij zichzelf, inclusief mond en neus met klei zodat hij onherkenbaar wordt, om te transformeren in misvormde, hybride, dierlijke, monsterachtige figuren. Hij wist en ontrafelt de lagen van zijn gezicht in een ongeremde zoektocht, als een ritueel op de grens van spot, dans en trance.De verwondering die ons ten deel valt, doet denken aan de verbazing die we voelen bij het zien van een compleet onverwacht beeld van onszelf: absurd, grappig en ongetemd.

Images rise to the surface as though they were memories on the skin. They incarnate these images, and the mind wanders freely through suggestions and strange evocations laced with humour. Anne-Sophie Lancelin and her accomplices create inspiring, evocative atmospheres using a level of execution that confirms their strength.

Confronted with the rawness of their nature and the uncertainty of their condition, human specimens explore the space they inhabit and the desire that moves them. However abstract, the drawings borne out by their bodies attest to a tangible commitment by these individuals. They experiment with movements, test their energies, feel themselves being pushed towards each other or into the void, which threatens to push back its limits... Drifting through the space, they suddenly regain their self-confidence to form a new community. Through the use of nudity, Sylvain Huc explores the issue of writing, achieving the right balance between the organic nature of the choreography and the natural life of the bodies. The acute, supple movement of the performers, the subtlety of the lighting and the obsessive sound all combine to form a spellbinding continuum.

Referring to the frequency 2349.32 Hz – associated with the note D, Ré in French – and the root of the word ‘revolution’ (return, turning in on oneself), Danielle Allouma pulls off the feat of spinning on herself for what seems like an infinite amount of time. This is less a performance than an attempt to alter our sensory per- ceptions and allow our imaginations to radiate from a fixed, whirling point. Three spirals – dance, music, and light – interweave on the stage in a hypnotic interplay where space and time func- tion as tangible forces and constraining structural frameworks. Arco Renz and Danielle Allouma create a radical, life-size mandala that reveals the sky of our thoughts.

This is a concert. The concert of a pianist who tackles great composers: Beethoven and Ligeti. The execution is flawless, albeit mischievous. At times staring at the audience, sometimes striking bewildering poses, she challenges the gravity of the situation and the narcissistic importance of the soloist. Whether she is understated, writhing in the emotion of doubt, or carried away by sheer energy. Joana Gama is a leading interpreter of the contemporary repertoire (Mompou, Cage, Feldman). She is involved in numerous solo projects and collaborations in film, dance, and theatre. The two pieces featured on the programme were devised in collaboration with Tânia Carvalho, choreographer and sister of the absurd and extravagance.

In Maryse Condé’s novel, Tituba is a black woman accused of witchcraft who becomes the mouthpiece for those silenced by force and erased by history. Performing live with Khyam Allami, Dorothée Munyaneza draws her inspiration from this story and uses her body to breathe new life into the victims of oppression in a sort of ‘collective solo’. Her precise, mesmerising, magnetic presence and her clear, husky singing vibrate through the space. With complete self-control, the dancer-choreographer builds up unstoppable tension, crossing a hybrid space – African, American, European, Caribbean – a place of traces, dreams, and violence. The air surrounding her becomes singularly consistent.

Dorothée Munyaneza, met live begeleiding van Khyam Allami, laat zich er op haar beurt door inspireren en gebruikt haar eigen lichaam om de slachtoffers van de verdrukking weer tot leven te wekken in een soort van “collectieve solo”. It is in the third century BC that the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca embarked on a mind-boggling journey: marching with 70,000 soldiers and 40 elephants, he entered Italy via Spain, France and the Alps, in an attempt to shake the Roman empire to its foundations. Hannibal ad portas! This new creation by Michael De Cock and Junior Mthombeni tells the story of the Punic Wars and the birth of Europe from the perspective of the Carthaginian uber-general. It is a performance about great clashes. The Punic Wars as a metaphor for all the conflicts being fought on the edges of the continent today. The figure of Hannibal as a lens through which we can explore the different visions of contemporary Europe. For, absurd as it may seem, the idea that there are once again ‘barbarians’ at the Southern borders of Europe, ready to wipe out its history, seems to be resurfacing. Through the unique synergy of opera and slam, contemporary dance and acting, Hannibal opens a window onto the past, present and future of the West. For the makers, Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas – about the betrayal of the Carthaginian queen, the mythical origin for the conflict between Europe and North Africa – is the starting point of a performance in which the fusion of arts and cultures is ultimately not something to be feared, but celebrated.    This production is part of Troika Dance

Ébranler l’Empire romain jusque dans ses fondations. Hannibal ad portas!  Dans leur nouvelle création, Michael De Cock et Junior Mthombeni racontent cette histoire à travers les yeux du généralissime carthaginois. Un spectacle sur les affrontements majeurs, où les guerres puniques tiennent lieu de métaphore des conflits qui font actuellement rage aux frontières du Vieux Continent, et la figure d’Hannibal, de prisme donnant à voir les différentes visions de l’Europe contemporaine. Car, malgré son absurdité, l’idée selon laquelle des « barbares » seraient à nouveau à nos portes, prêts à éradiquer notre histoire, semble refaire surface. Par le biais d’une synergie unique entre opéra et slam, danse contemporaine et théâtre, Hannibal ouvre une fenêtre sur le passé, le présent et l’avenir de l’Occident. Hannibal ad portas!   Deze nieuwe creatie van Michael De Cock en Junior Mthombeni brengt het verhaal van de Punische oorlogen en het ontstaan van Europa vanuit het perspectief van de Carthaagse supergeneraal. Het is een voorstelling over grote confrontaties. De Punische oorlogen als metafoor voor alle conflicten die vandaag worden uitgevochten aan de randen van het continent. De figuur van Hannibal als een lens waardoor we de verschillende visies op het hedendaagse Europa kunnen verkennen. Want het idee dat er opnieuw ‘barbaren’ aan de Europese zuidgrenzen staan, klaar om de geschiedenis van het continent uit te wissen, lijkt, hoe absurd ook, te herleven. Via de unieke synergie tussen opera en slam, hedendaagse dans en acteerwerk, opent Hannibal daarom een raam op het verleden, het heden en de toekomst van het Avondland. Many years have passed since the end of Die Walküre. Although Brünnhilde is still in a deep sleep, the child Sieglinde was expecting is now an adolescent. Siegfried is a fearless son of nature who grows up far from civilization in a rough and violent world. When he manages to reforge the sword Nothung, adventure beckons: he defeats the dragon Fafner, comes into possession of the Ring and goes in search of Brünnhilde, an encounter that will transform him profoundly.   With Siegfried, La Monnaie is continuing its production of Der Ring des Nibelungen, under the musical guidance of Alain Altinoglu and in a new staging by Pierre Audi. Before tragedy erupts in Götterdämmerung, this third part – which includes the sounds of nature, a dragon, a talking bird and a swaggering protagonist – is like a dark fairy-tale scherzo.  Are you under 30? Urban Dance Caravan was born of a powerful desire to invent and share new dance forms routes in Brussels (a city-region that is home to multiple cultures and languages), Wallonia and far beyond. Where dance that engages the body, welcoming what is around it and projecting itself into what comes next, is both an expression of freedom and a way of living well. Thought through and (jointly) constructed with Detours – the Brussels festival of urban dance and street art – and the Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles, Urban Dance Caravan – a new kind of association that rekindles cultural and social dynamics – consists of a wide range of urban dances that feel, experience and cross the city centre, from square to square, leading us to the heart of the Théâtre National. Over the course of a Saturday afternoon, dancers from all over Belgium will gather around the finalists of the Detours Battles from Wallonia – Verviers, La Louvière, Liège – and Brussels as well as from the Congo, Rwanda, Côte d’Ivoire, Argentina and Costa Rica. They will perform on ephemeral stages from Bourse to Place De Brouckère and on to Boulevard Émile Jacqmain, leading the crowd to the main stage of the Théâtre National for the final battle of the Detours Cyphers.  Thanks to radical hospitality, human, creative and poetic links are forged between Brussels and Wallonia, Europe, America and Africa, to promote better understanding among cultures and the free circulation of audiences and artists capable of changing the way we pay attention and the way we perceive things. In its raw simplicity, Urban Dance Caravan shifts the edges of the city and those of the theatre.
