No one flees for fun. Ali is 12 years old when he leaves Somalia. He travels the
dangerous road from the Horn of Africa to the heart of Europe. Along the way,
friendships are made despite the hardships and hope is found amidst the horror.
Ali has to cross several countries, a desert and the Mediterranean along with
hundreds of migrants seeking a better future. He arrives at the Brussels South
railway station in 2019, alone, without knowing a word of French or Dutch. He is
14 years old …
This incredible epic is the true story of Ali Abdi Omar, adapted for the opera
in collaboration with Ali himself. This moving creation reconstructs all the
stages of his journey. A sensory experience where electronic music, voice,
string and wind instruments, percussion and dance pay a vibrant tribute to the
resilience of a young boy forced, like so many others, to leave his family and
home in order to survive.

The spaceship ‘In-Between’ travels through the universe with a crew of four
humans and an android tasked with exporting the Japanese language to other
galaxies. Toshiki Okada creates this theatrical gem, in which a science fiction
reality meets the everyday poetry of group dynamics in a confined space. For
this project, he decided to work with four actors who are not native Japanese
speakers. By making them custodians of Japanese culture, Okada reminds us that
language simply belongs to those who speak it while using the spaceship as a
metaphor to critically reflect on Japan’s colonial past in Southeast Asia, its
linguistic expansion and the politics of language. Before our eyes, the four
humans interact with the android and an alien that appears on board while the
spaceship passes through a space time tunnel. Together, they open a delicate
dialogue on origins and nostalgia for the earth. From the window, we observe
them, or perhaps they observe us, those who remain on earth. Suddenly,
‘In-Between’ isn’t just the name of a spaceship or a tunnel between two areas of
the galaxy, but a hymn to the identities that exist beyond a defined one, in
between. Toshiki Okada returns to the festival with a performance of rarefied
beauty, suspended in the absence of gravity.

japonaise vers d’autres galaxies.

In 1974, admist a hunger strike by undocumented workers in Paris, the Movement
of Arab Workers created a singular political action: presenting a candidate for
the imminent presidential elections. They chose a member of their Al Assifa
theatre group, an 18-year-old Tunisian hunger striker using the pseudonym
Djellali Kamal. The campaign was conceived as a public performance highlighting
the denial of civil rights to migrants and projecting self-agency. Artist
Bouchra Khalili now creates a video installation, consisting of two video works
that form a unique dialogue reconnecting distant geographies and times. With The
Circle, she reconstructed the incredible adventure of this powerful action from
fifty years ago. With The Public Storyteller, a new commission by the festival,
she films a halqa, a centuries-old practice of public storytelling in Morocco,
to people arranged in a circle. In this halqa, Djellali’s campaign is narrated
by a storyteller in Marrakesh, implicitly forming a new circle linking the
diaspora and North Africa. What does this gap between 1974 and 2024 tell us, a
few days before a new election? How can invisibilised identities become visible?
Khalili emphasises the importance of remembering past political strategies as a
practice of intergenerational transmission for the present and future.

Dans The

Sometimes a unique atmosphere is found around the kitchen table; we are with
others in ways that would not be possible elsewhere. Indonesian collective
ruangrupa/GudSkul unfolds the beauty of informal conditions and how knowledge
circulates through them. How can being around the kitchen table create the
optimal conditions to let things happen? To explore this question, the
collective collaborates with Mirra Markhaëva, an artist who is active in the
artistic workspace of Globe Aroma and developed Dumpling Tales, a series of
performative dinners. Guests learn about three types of dumplings originating in

It is in the third century BC that the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca
embarked on a mind-boggling journey: marching with 70,000 soldiers and 40
elephants, he entered Italy via Spain, France and the Alps, in an attempt to
shake the Roman empire to its foundations. Hannibal ad portas!
This new creation by Michael De Cock and Junior Mthombeni tells the story of the
Punic Wars and the birth of Europe from the perspective of the Carthaginian
uber-general. It is a performance about great clashes. The Punic Wars as a
metaphor for all the conflicts being fought on the edges of the continent today.
The figure of Hannibal as a lens through which we can explore the different
visions of contemporary Europe. For, absurd as it may seem, the idea that there
are once again ‘barbarians’ at the Southern borders of Europe, ready to wipe out
its history, seems to be resurfacing. Through the unique synergy of opera and
slam, contemporary dance and acting, Hannibal opens a window onto the past,
present and future of the West. For the makers, Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and
Aeneas – about the betrayal of the Carthaginian queen, the mythical origin for
the conflict between Europe and North Africa – is the starting point of a
performance in which the fusion of arts and cultures is ultimately not something
to be feared, but celebrated.

Henry Purcells opera Dido and Aeneas

Haunted by the image of Troy drowning in blood and flames, Aeneas travels the
seas. He lands in Carthage, home to the beautiful Dido. At first cold and
fearful, the princess soon develops an all-consuming passion for the Trojan and
accepts his proposal of marriage. But a message urges Aeneas to continue his
journey without delay. In despair, he breaks off their engagement and returns to
port to prepare his ship. At the last moment, Aeneas turns around and declares
his love for Dido once again, but Dido rejects him before slowly dying of a
broken heart.
Based on Henry Purcell’s essential baroque opera, choreographer Blanca Li
revisits the myth of Dido and Aeneas for ten dancers in this decisively
contemporary production. Drawing on her experience in film, fashion and music –
including prestigious collaborations with the likes of Pedro Almodóvar, Daft
Punk and Beyoncé – she ingeniously blends song and dance in a refined
scenography full of striking images.

Impossible love, a theme as old as humankind, portrayed and sung by the very
greatest. For their latest dance creation, Rosalba Torres Guerrero and Koen
Augustijnen take their inspiration from Claudio Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo and
his dramatic madrigal Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Two stories about
iconic couples whose doomed love affair also captivated many other baroque
composers. Amours Aveugles, performed musically by two accordionists alongside
soprano Liesbeth Devos and tenor Ed Lyon, does not shy away from the great
emotions these works evoke. Nor from the big questions: How can we become so
blinded by love that we commit the irrevocable? Why do we sometimes inflict the
most pain on those we love the most? And what meaning can myths still have today
in our uber-digitized and highly individualized world?

beloont.” — Pzazz

Manuele Infante has long been exploring how the boundary between that which is
human and non-human is created only then to demolish it. In Horizon, she
interacts with her father, with whom she shares an unbridled curiosity for the
unknown. Although they approach the subject from different angles – he an
astronomer, she an artist – one topic keeps cropping up in their conversations:
the horizon.
That horizon, that unknown domain, appears not just in the distance. The horizon
is also within us, scattered throughout our bodies, lives and histories. What is
more unknown than our own psyche?
Manuele Infante explores multi-dimensional horizons together with Diego Noguera,
her faithful companion, and four actors (Andie Dushime, Valentijn Dhaenens,
Mieke De Groote and Pitcho Womba Konga).
• Manuela Infante Güell is a Chilean theatre-maker, dramatist, screenwriter and
musician with international appeal. Known for her theatrical staging of
contemporary theoretical issues, she creates work that cross the line between
music, theatre and philosophy. In 2021, Kaaitheater and KVS jointly presented
its show How to turn to stone. Complementing this new show Horizon, Infante's
research is also the focus of the Things we know we will never know edition of
More-Than-Human Encounters.

Do you know any women who, long after surviving a rape, have confided in you
about their abuse? What did they tell you? What do they remember? Do you know
about Pippa Bacca, the Italian artist who was raped and murdered while on
tour?
Carolina Bianchi works from rape stories and also draws from art and literary
history. In a theatrical language that balances from lecture performance to
visual ensemble theatre, Bianchi brings these experiences and stories to life.
The result exists somewhere between memory and dream, between imagination and a
tangible reality. She engages physically, by exposing herself to the influence
of a rape potion (known in Brazil as Boa Noite Cinderela or Goodnight
Cinderella).
Her amnesiac body then turns her into a character amid the scenes in which the
players of her collective get to work with material from Roberto Bolano's
masterpiece 2666. A haunting performance, an attempt to find clues to what is so
difficult to name, an ode to memory that is incomplete.
• Carolina Bianchi is a Brazilian theatre director, playwright and performer.
She has been based in Amsterdam since graduating from the DAS Theatre master's
programme but continues to work with her collective Cara de Cavalo ("the face of
the horse"). She mixes literary, art and cinematic references in her work, which
is situated between theatre, performance and dance. Her research addresses
issues such as gender in crisis, sexual violence and art history.

In What Remains brengt Zoë Demoustier twee generaties samen op scène: kinderen
hun kwetsbaarheid.
zegevieren. "De ontroering daarvan is groot.” — #jury23
The Making of Berlin - BERLIN / YVES DEGRYSE

********** English **********
07 July 2016, the creators of BERLIN have just performed their show Zvizdal at
the Berliner Festspiele. They meet an elderly but sturdy German man. They get
talking and are fascinated by his improbable life. A few conversations and weeks
later, they decide to link the last part of their Holocene cycle to him, in
which they each focus on a city or village somewhere in the world.
The Making of Berlin is a portrait of a city built around the extraordinary life
of a Berliner who worked as an orchestra director with the Berliner
Philharmoniker. A man who would love to go back in time to complete an
unfinished chapter in his life. BERLIN took it upon itself, with the help of
Opera Ballet Vlaanderen's orchestra and radio station Klara, among others, to
help the man realise his dream. Gradually, however, they find cracks in his
story and the whole project is called into question.
• The work of the BERLIN company always finds itself at the crossroads between
documentary and theatre. Armed with cameras, interview techniques, editing
tables and actors, they immerse themselves in situations and unravel various
storylines. BERLIN is now on the Kaaitheater programme for the first time as
part of PeriferiK.
“As masters of storytelling, Yves Degryse and co. pull out all the stops again
to completely draw their audience into the story, not in the least thanks to
their exciting plot and multi-layered editing.” — #jury23

7 juillet 2016.

— #jury23
Een leuk avondje uit [8+] - Jetse Batelaan / hetpaleis / Theater Artemis & Het Zuidelijk Toneel

Most of the time things go as planned, but life is unfortunately also full of
obstacles. Sometimes things fall over. And not always at the right time.Pets get
sick. There is news that scares you.And then there are also pants that don’t fit
well, girlfriends who are annoying and days that are just not fun.
Emotions run high in this performance. Sadness, fear, love, shame, joy and
loneliness all get their own dazzling show number. But also behind the scenes,
feelings take center stage. While the musical stars sing and dance like their
lives depend on it, they try to shut their feelings out. But that’s not easy.
Especially if you’re human. Will they manage to keep themselves in check? Or
will their emotions steal the show? Stop the thief!
“Jetse Batelaan does it again: convincing young and old alike with a funny,
layered yet deeply psychological performance.” — #jury23

— #jury23
