help but notice. She has a stage presence only matched by the clarityof her
voice – couple this with her dedication to music that swings, and you have the
jazz musician’s singer.” – James Morrison Multi-Instrumentalist (AU) For these
intimate concerts, British/Australian jazz vocalist Hetty Kate has invited
celebrated musicians, pianist Maxime Moyaerts and bassist Victor Foulon to join
her. As the trio explores classics and curiosities from the swing, cool jazz and
bop eras you’ll discover the joys of the jazz trio, a simplicity allowing each
musician, and importantly, each song to shine. “Like Peggy Lee on a Vespa” Marc
Myers, Jazzwax Magazine (USA) Described as “the real deal” and “one of the best
swing singers on the scene today”, jazz singer Hetty Kate has been pursuing an
impressive international career for over a decade. From intimate clubs to the
most prestigious stages such as The Sydney Opera House, Hetty’s career has taken
her all over the world, from New Zealand to New York. With her clear voice and
remarkable intonation, reminiscent of the singers of the 1950s, Hetty Kate
swings the beautiful songs of the American Songbook – from Gershwin to Dameron,
from swing to bop. You’ll notice that Hetty “honors the composer” by staying
true to the message and melody of his composition, and uses improvisation in a
way that never interferes with the lyrics. It is this rare quality and a
compelling ease on stage that has attracted the attention of musicians and
audiences the world over. Over the course of her career, Hetty has released ten
critically acclaimed albums and performed at many festivals including the New
York Winter Jazz Festival (USA), the Sapporo Jazz Festival (Japan), the Prague
Proms (Czech Republic), the Melbourne, Sydney and Perth International Jazz
Festivals (Australia), the Cavell Leitch International Jazz Festival (New
Zealand), thePeniscola Jazz Festival (Spain), the Piacenza Jazz Festival
(Italy). Hetty also toured extensively with award-winning Australian jazz
musician James Morrison for many years, notably as the featured vocalist on his
symphonic concert (Europe/Asia/Australia) entitled “The A to Z of Jazz”. Join us

Description

Nothing is what it seems at the old English country house Bly. When a new
governess takes up her position, she is told never to leave the children alone!
The shocking confrontation with the ghosts of her predecessor and a certain
Peter Quint soon makes it clear to her why. As protecting the children becomes
increasingly difficult, disturbing questions arise: What horrible acts took
place before her arrival? How innocent are the children? And are you really
seeing what’s before your eyes?
Drawing on Henry James’s intriguing ghost story, Benjamin Britten composed a
psychological thriller in chamber opera format with The Turn of the Screw.
Director Andrea Breth keeps the mystery intact, turning House Bly into a
labyrinth in which the characters are not the only ones to lose themselves.
Together with conductor Antonio Méndez, she will turn the screw on your
imagination as far as it goes…
Are you under 30? Then attend this opera on the Young Opera Night (10.5.2024)
and enjoy a free reception and exclusive after-event.

composé, avec The Turn of the Screw, un thriller psychologique sous forme

Britten met The Turn of the Screw een psychologische thriller in
kameroperaformaat.

In death you will find fulfilment, in your neighbour perhaps the truth behind
love. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs
– posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century
– sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.
In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering,
Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von
Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy
lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us:
what if death brings peace?
The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and
charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good
friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and
‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet
of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this
season.
After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others,
soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage.
Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled
evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of
song.

« Tell
me the Truth About Love », « Funeral Blues », « Johnny » et « Calypso », toutes

Benjamin Brittens vooroorlogse Cabaret Songs. ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’,
The Turn of the Screw
brengen.

Nowadays, the term opera seria brings to mind works by a few big names (Vivaldi,
Handel and, of course, Mozart) and some rather outdated features (castrati,
virtuoso arias, heroic plots, elaborate sets). In the 18th century, by contrast,
opera seria was a pastime 'très à la mode' for folks from all walks of life, a
show format that could be adapted to a wide range of contexts and a lucrative,
competitive economic market that conveyed the most prevailing moral values.
There is clearly a paradox here: Although opera seria has since become a
legitimate feature of the classical music repertoire, we view it as an art form
far removed from our contemporary aesthetic criteria. Nonetheless, it was once a
socio-economic phenomenon closely resembling another component of present-day
reality: the entertainment industry. How does this shift influence the way we
perceive and appreciate opera seria today?
Hugo Rodriguez is currently curator of the library at the Royal Conservatory of
Brussels. He has previously worked at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) and the
Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). He holds a doctorate in musicology from the
Free University of Brussels, where he now teaches, and is the author of a
dissertation on the question of meaning in music, viewed from the intersection
of history, philosophy and cognitive science. He also conducts ongoing research
on comedy in music and on Belgian musical life. He was a curator of the
exhibition ‘Toots 100: The Sound of a Belgian Legend’ and co-organised other
projects (symposia, conferences, concerts, publications) to mark the centenary
of Toots Thielemans' birth.

The Sound of a Belgian Legend et a co-organisé

heersende morele waarden overbracht.

Marriage is out of the question for Princess Turandot. To avoid tying the knot
with one or other stranger, she lays down a terrible rule: Anyone seeking her
hand must solve three riddles. While three right answers will result in
marriage, a single wrong answer will result in death by beheading. Blinded by
his love for the emperor’s daughter, the mysterious Prince Calaf takes up the
challenge.
Giacomo Puccini died in Brussels in 1924, leaving the score of his last opera
unfinished. A century later, conductor Kazushi Ono and director Christophe
Coppens prove that the work has more to offer than its iconic aria ‘Nessun
dorma’. Coppens sets Turandot in present-day Hong Kong, where an immensely rich
family is losing itself in money, power and violence. Trying to escape her
mother’s iron grip, the rebellious Turandot finds herself in a maelstrom of
derailed fantasy that drives her to extremes.

17.06 – UDANA QUINTET
Mozart, Dvorak, Zemlinsky and others
Célestine Wacquez | flute
Tine Verhoeven | oboe
Alba Mayorga Rodrigo | clarinet
Rob Laethem | bassoon
Jaso Enuset | French horn
Having inaugurated con brio our series of musical animations last summer, the
Udana Quintet returns to the festival under a new name, but with the very same
passion to share its music with the most diverse audiences. This wind ensemble
(formerly the Bizart Quintet) is made up of five musician friends from different
Belgian royal conservatoires. After playing together in various orchestral
projects (including the renowned Youth Orchestra Flanders), they decided to
pursue their shared passion for chamber music by forming a quintet. The vast
repertoire for wind quintet provides them with a formidable playing field for
developing a true group sound and original interpretations, full of zest and
character, that bring out the best in each member. Thus, this talented young
quintet breathes new life into a beloved 18th-century tradition – that of
performing ‘classical’ music in public spaces.
18.06 – DUO EURYDICE
Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Schubert and Bellini
Doris Brasseur | soprano
Camille Ledocq | cello
These talented graduates of the IMEP in Namur, and the Royal Conservatory of
Brussels saw their paths cross again in 2020 at the non-profit association Arts
Émoi. Eager to perform together, they set out on a collaborative exploration of
the musical and acoustic possibilities of their two instruments. With a focus on
opera and melody, their repertoire since covers a wide range of musical styles
and periods. Alongside their respective activities as musicologist and teacher,
the duo are constantly seeking new artistic avenues, whether it be a show built
around their mythological namesake or the present programme dedicated to the Bel
Canto, from Bach to Bellini. Thanks to these resourceful young women, opera will
resound both inside and outside the theatre this summer.
19.06 – QUÍRON QUARTET
Mozart, Haydn and others
Edgar Gomes | violin
Ricardo Vieira | violin
José Miguel Freitas | viola
Maria Nabeiro | cello
Inspired by their namesake, the mythological centaur of knowledge and art, the
Quíron Quartet ardently seek the knowledge of their musical formation as well as
the art of its public presentation. Founded in late 2020, the quartet have
already performed in Portugal, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland,
Italy and Poland, as well as at festivals including Casa del Quartetto and
Crans-Montana Classics. In 2023, the quartet completed a postgraduate degree at
the Royal Brussels Conservatoire under the supervision of Eric Robberecht and
won the prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work at the Karol
Szymanowski International Music Competition. A member of the prestigious
Nederlandse StrijkKwartet Academie since 2021, these exceptional musicians are
also mentored by Chamber Music for Europe, a valued partner of our festival.

17.06 – HET UDANA KWINTET
Mozart, Dvorak, Zemlinsky en anderen
Célestine Wacquez | fluit
Tine Verhoeven | hobo
Alba Mayorga Rodrigo | klarinet
Rob Laethem | fagot
Jaso Enuset | hoorn
klassieke muziek in openbare ruimtes.
18.06 – HET DUO EURYDICE
Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Schubert en Bellini
Doris Brasseur | sopraan
Camille Ledocq | cello
gewaardeerde festivalpartner.

17.06 – LE QUINTETTE UDANA
Mozart, Dvorak, Zemlinsky et autres
Célestine Wacquez | flûte
Tine Verhoeven | hautbois
Alba Mayorga Rodrigo | clarinette
Rob Laethem | basson
Jaso Enuset | cor
Bach, Pergolesi, Mozart, Schubert, Bellini
Doris Brasseur | soprano
Camille Ledocq | violoncelle

A festival that gets a theatre singing (again)!
Following the resounding success of Die Zauberflöte last summer, we are proud to
present the opera Mitridate, re di Ponto at the Théâtre des Galeries this
summer. This is a rare production of Mozart's very first opera seria (written at
the age of 14!), a veritable triumph when it premiered in 1770. This masterpiece
sings a powerful story of geopolitical confrontation (in a region known today as
Crimea), fratricidal conflict and thwarted love (what could be more topical?).
For all those who love vocal fireworks, this is no doubt the very modern-day
production in which the roles of the rival brothers (originally written for
castrati) will both be sung by men (in this case a sopranist and a
countertenor).
And echoing the ‘intimate and grandiose’ Requiem performed last summer by the
prestigious phalanges of the CAV&MA de Namur, Missa Brevis will take the stage
of the Théâtre des Galeries this summer. This ground-breaking concert, conceived
by the excellent emerging conductor Gabriel Hollander, promises to delight all
fans of sacred music (out of the box), chamber music (of a spiritual kind) or
contemporary music (in its choral form). Featured on the programme are
liturgical miniatures by Mozart, Haydn… and Belgian composer Fabian Fiorini.
A festival that shows you round the centre of Brussels!
Besides these exciting main stage productions, you will find a variety of free
events at landmark venues throughout the city centre. In the Galerie du Roi,
right outside the theatre, talented young performers (a wind quintet, a
voice-cello duo and a string quartet) will serenade passers-by to kick off our
festival week in style. A short stroll to Place des Martyrs will bring you to
Maison CFC, at number 14, and two fascinating lectures on the journeys to Italy
of aspiring composers and the evolution of opera seria across the ages. Turn
left into Rue aux Choux, and straight ahead you will see the beautiful
Mozart-era church Notre-Dame du Finistère. This peaceful haven in the bustling
Rue Neuve will be the stage for a fabulous all-Handel concert, featuring two
outstanding sopranos and a four-piece Baroque band.
A festival that takes opera on the road!
In July, we will once again be touring our opera production to the Théâtre Royal
in Mons as part of the Festival au Carré, and then to the Grand-Manège in Namur
as part of the Festival musical de Namur, courtesy of the ORCW and the CAV&MA,
major partners of our Brussels festival. Our shared mission is to make opera
(originally a popular form of entertainment) more accessible for a broader, more
diverse audience. So make a date with Mozart this June! We look forward to
seeing you there.

Is vocaal vuurwerk jouw passie?
Onze gezamenlijke missie is
We kijken
ernaar uit je daar te zien.

Italy, the birthplace of the opera, the oratorio and the cantata (not to mention
the concerto and the sonata), was the country every civilised man had to visit
in the 18th century. Not surprisingly, Handel, in his early twenties, found his
way to Italy, in the autumn of 1706, as would Mozart, even younger, some 60
years later. Until the spring of 1710, Handel rubbed shoulders with the biggest
names in Italian music: Lotti, Vivaldi and Albinoni in Venice, Perti in
Florence, Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti, Caldara, Corelli and Pasquini in
Rome. In the Eternal City, a papal decree banning opera prompted composers and
patrons to turn their dramatic inclinations to non-theatrical forms. The
abundance of available opera stars encouraged the flourishing of the secular
cantata, a form that distils a long lyrical-dramatic arc into a few movements of
concentrated emotion. This free concert, organised with the support of the City
of Brussels, features two such cantatas. Handel composed Armida abbandonata in
1707 for the star soprano Margherita Durastanti (who later followed him to
London to sing Italian operas). Agrippina condotta a morire was most likely
intended for the same diva. These mini-dramas are powerful portraits of female
characters with tragic fates. Having arrived an apprentice, il caro Sassone left
Italy as a master.
PROGRAMME
Sinfonia in B-flat major HWV 339
Cantata Armida abbandonata HWV 105
Trio Sonata in G minor HWV 390
Cantata Agrippina condotto a morire HWV 110
Duetto No, di voi non vo' fidarmi HWV 189

Agrippina condotta a morire était

beschaafde man moest bezoeken.
Agrippina condotta a
