A festival that gets a theatre singing (again)!
Following the resounding success of Die Zauberflöte last summer, we are proud to present the opera Mitridate, re di Ponto at the Théâtre des Galeries this summer. This is a rare production of Mozart's very first opera seria (written at the age of 14!), a veritable triumph when it premiered in 1770. This masterpiece sings a powerful story of geopolitical confrontation (in a region known today as Crimea), fratricidal conflict and thwarted love (what could be more topical?). For all those who love vocal fireworks, this is no doubt the very modern-day production in which the roles of the rival brothers (originally written for castrati) will both be sung by men (in this case a sopranist and a countertenor).

And echoing the ‘intimate and grandiose’ Requiem performed last summer by the prestigious phalanges of the CAV&MA de Namur, Missa Brevis will take the stage of the Théâtre des Galeries this summer. This ground-breaking concert, conceived by the excellent emerging conductor Gabriel Hollander, promises to delight all fans of sacred music (out of the box), chamber music (of a spiritual kind) or contemporary music (in its choral form). Featured on the programme are liturgical miniatures by Mozart, Haydn… and Belgian composer Fabian Fiorini.

A festival that shows you round the centre of Brussels!
Besides these exciting main stage productions, you will find a variety of free events at landmark venues throughout the city centre. In the Galerie du Roi, right outside the theatre, talented young performers (a wind quintet, a voice-cello duo and a string quartet) will serenade passers-by to kick off our festival week in style. A short stroll to Place des Martyrs will bring you to Maison CFC, at number 14, and two fascinating lectures on the journeys to Italy of aspiring composers and the evolution of opera seria across the ages. Turn left into Rue aux Choux, and straight ahead you will see the beautiful Mozart-era church Notre-Dame du Finistère. This peaceful haven in the bustling Rue Neuve will be the stage for a fabulous all-Handel concert, featuring two outstanding sopranos and a four-piece Baroque band.

A festival that takes opera on the road!
In July, we will once again be touring our opera production to the Théâtre Royal in Mons as part of the Festival au Carré, and then to the Grand-Manège in Namur as part of the Festival musical de Namur, courtesy of the ORCW and the CAV&MA, major partners of our Brussels festival. Our shared mission is to make opera (originally a popular form of entertainment) more accessible for a broader, more diverse audience. So make a date with Mozart this June! Un festival qui fait (re)chanter un théâtre !
Après l'immense succès de Die Zauberflöte l'été dernier, nous sommes fiers de présenter cet été l’opéra Mitridate, re di Ponto au Théâtre des Galeries. Il s'agit d'une production rare du premier opera seria de Mozart (écrit à l'âge de 14 ans !), véritable triomphe lors de sa création en 1770. Ce chef-d'œuvre chante une histoire puissante d'affrontements géopolitiques (dans une région appelée aujourd'hui la Crimée), de conflits fratricides et d'amours contrariées (quoi de plus actuel ?). Pour tous ceux qui aiment les feux d'artifice vocaux, voici sans doute la toute première fois des temps modernes que les rôles des frères rivaux (écrits à l'origine pour des castrats) seront tous deux chantés par des hommes (en l'occurrence un sopraniste et un contre-ténor).

Et comme un écho au Requiem 'intime et grandiose' interprété en juin dernier par le CAV&MA de Namur, la Missa Brevis fera résonner le Théâtre des Galeries cet été. Ce concert inédit (conçu par l'excellent jeune chef d'orchestre Gabriel Hollander) promet de ravir tous les amateurs de musique sacrée (sortie de son écrin), de musique de chambre (à caractère spirituel)) et de musique contemporaine (sous sa forme chorale). Au programme, des miniatures liturgiques de Mozart, de Haydn... et du compositeur belge contemporain Fabian Fiorini.

Un festival qui s’ouvre sur la Ville !
Outre ces deux productions au théâtre, une série d'événements gratuits auront lieu dans divers lieux emblématiques du centre-ville. Dans la Galerie du Roi, juste à l'extérieur du théâtre, de jeunes interprètes en plein essor (un quintette à vent, un duo voix-violoncelle et un quatuor à cordes) donneront des Sérénades aux passants afin de lancer la semaine de festival en beauté. Une courte promenade jusqu'à la Place des Martyrs mène ensuite à la Maison CFC, au numéro 14, où se tiendront deux conférences passionnantes sur le passage des compositeurs en Italie et l'évolution de l'opera seria à travers les âges. En tournant à gauche dans la rue aux Choux, on arrive à la belle église Notre-Dame du Finistère, datant de l'époque de Mozart. Ce havre de paix dans la Rue Neuve animée sera le cadre d'un superbe concert, Haendel en Italie, par deux sopranos belges de grand talent et quatre spécialistes du baroque de renommée internationale.

En juillet, nous emmènerons à nouveau notre opéra au Théâtre Royal de Mons lors du Festival au Carré, puis au Grand-Manège de Namur lors du Festival musical de Namur, grâce aux invitations de l'ORCW et du CAV&MA, partenaires incontournables de notre festival bruxellois. Een festival dat een theater (weer) laat zingen!
Na het enorme succes van Die Zauberflöte afgelopen zomer, presenteren we deze zomer met trots Mitridate, re di Ponto in het Théâtre des Galeries. Dit is een zeldzame productie van Mozarts allereerste opera seria (geschreven op 14-jarige leeftijd!), waarvan de première in 1770 een ware triomf was. Dit meesterwerk bezingt een krachtig verhaal van geopolitieke confrontatie (in een regio die vandaag de dag bekend staat als de Krim), bloedige broederstrijd en gedwarsboomde liefde (wat is er actueler?). Is vocaal vuurwerk jouw passie? Dit is vermoedelijk de allereerste keer in de moderne tijd dat de rollen van de rivaliserende broers (oorspronkelijk geschreven voor castrati) allebei door mannen worden gezongen (in dit geval een sopranist en een countertenor).

En als echo aan het 'intieme en grandioze' Requiem dat afgelopen zomer werd uitgevoerd door het Naamse CAV&MA, zal Missa Brevis het podium van het Théâtres des Galeries betreden. Dit baanbrekende concert (bedacht door de uitstekende jonge dirigent Gabriel Hollander) belooft alle liefhebbers van sacrale muziek (out of the box), kamermuziek (met een spiritueel karakter) en hedendaagse muziek (in koorvorm) te bekoren. Op het programma staan liturgische miniaturen van Mozart, Haydn... en de Belgische componist Fabian Fiorini.

Een festival dat je rondleidt door hartje Brussel!
Naast deze voorstellingen in het theater vind je een aantal gratis evenementen op verschillende locaties in het stadscentrum. In de Koningsgalerij, net buiten het theater, brengen getalenteerde jonge artiesten (een blaaskwintet, een duo zang-cello en een strijkkwartet) een serenade aan passanten om onze festivalweek in stijl af te trappen. Een korte wandeling richting het Martelarenplein brengt je naar het Maison CFC, op nummer 14, waar je twee boeiende lezingen kan volgen over de passage van ontluikende componisten naar Italië en de evolutie van de opera seria door de eeuwen heen. Sla linksaf de Koolstraat in en recht voor je zie je de prachtige 18de-eeuwse Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Finisterraekerk. Deze oase van rust in de bruisende Nieuwstraat wordt het podium voor een prachtig Händelconcert met twee uitstekende Belgische sopranen en een vierkoppige barokband.

Een festival dat opera meeneemt op tournee!
In juli trekken we opnieuw met onze operaproductie naar het Théâtre Royal in Bergen op het Festival au Carré en vervolgens naar het Grand-Manège in Namen op het Festival musical de Namur, dankzij de uitnodigingen van het ORCW en het CAV&MA, sleutelpartners van ons Brusselse festival. Onze gezamenlijke missie is om opera (van oorsprong een populaire vorm van entertainment) terug te brengen naar een breder publiek. Dus maak een afspraak met Mozart in juni! We kijken ernaar uit je daar te zien.

Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs – posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century – sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.   In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering, Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us: what if death brings peace?   The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and ‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this season.  After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others, soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage. Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of song. ********** Français ********** C’est dans la mort qu’on trouve la plénitude ; et c’est peut-être chez son voisin qu’on trouvera la vérité de l’amour. IAIN BURNSIDE While Iain is celebrated primarily for his work with many of the world's great singers, he has extensive experience as a chamber musician. His discography spans over 50 CDs, reflecting both the wide spectrum of his musical interests, and his passion for programme planning. He has pursued a parallel career in broadcasting, honoured by a Sony Radio Award, and relishes any opportunity to combine both spheres of activity. Haydn Trio in E minor Hob.XV:12 Judith Weir. O Viridissima Shostakovich Trio no 2, op 67 Dvorak Trio no 3 in F minor op 65 4 differents trios from 4 differents centuries: more, if you count the plainsong of Hildegard of Bingen, the inspiration behind Judith Weir’s poignant O Viridissima. ********** English ********** First guest conductor Roberto González-Monjas began his career as a solo violinist, concertmaster and chamber musician. In this concert, he performs – as violinist and musical director – Mozart's Fourth Violin Concerto, written by the Austrian composer in 1776 while in the service of the Salzburg archbishops. Pictures at an Exhibition is Mussorgsky's most famous work. The occasion for writing this cycle was an exhibition of works by the Russian painter and architect Viktor Hartmann, a close friend of Mussorgsky's who had died suddenly. Ten sketches served Mussorgsky as inspiration for as many compositions. He interspersed them with 'promenades': short compositions that depict how the composer walks from one work to the next. ********** Français ********** Roberto González-Monjas, Premier chef d’orchestre invité du Belgian National Orchestra, a commencé sa carrière comme violoniste soliste, premier violon et musicien de chambre. Lors de ce concert, il interprète – à la fois comme violoniste et directeur musical – le Quatrième Concerto pour violon de Mozart, une œuvre que le compositeur autrichien a écrite en 1776 alors qu’il était au service du prince-archevêque de Salzbourg. Les tableaux d’une exposition constitue l’œuvre la plus célèbre de Moussorgski. Ce cycle a été écrit à l’occasion d’une exposition d’œuvres du peintre et architecte russe Viktor Hartmann, un ami proche de Moussorgski décédé subitement. Journée qui se terminera en apothéose avec l’Iris Tipik Electro Night. Elle accueillera les fans de musique sur la Place des Palais, transformée pour l’occasion en piste de danse géante. Cette année encore, la collaboration entre la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, visit.brussels et la RTBF à travers son média Tipik a abouti à un impressionnant line-up avec Ofenbach, l’un des duos électro français les plus exportés à l’étranger, les producteurs stars des réseaux sociaux TRINIX, ainsi que les locaux de l’étape Alex Germys, Emjie et Raql! Le dimanche, ce sera au tour du Parc de Bruxelles d’accueillir la Fête de l'Iris. De nombreuses activités originales seront proposées toute la journée et des artistes de rue déambuleront aux quatre coins du parc. Op zaterdag staat het Irisfeest in het teken van de gemeenten met heel wat rondleidingen. De dag wordt afgesloten met de Iris Tipik Electro Night. Die vormt het indrukwekkende Paleizenplein om tot een megadansvloer. Ook dit jaar resulteerde de samenwerking tussen het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest, visit.brussels en RTBF via het platform Tipik in een indrukwekkende line-up met Ofenbach, een van de bekendste Franse electroduo’s in het buitenland, social-mediasterren TRINIX en plaatselijke helden als Alex Germys, Emjie en Raql op de affiche! Een dag later is het Warandepark het epicentrum van het Irisfeest. In het park kan je de hele dag een heleboel leuke activiteiten beleven met het hele gezin. Tussendoor kunnen bezoekers genieten van de talenten van straatartiesten. The festivities will take place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May 2024. On Saturday, the focus of the Iris Festival will be on the communes with numerous guided tours. The day concludes with the Iris Tipik Electro Night, transforming the impressive Place des Palais/Paleizenplein into a mega dance floor. Violon : Vilmos Csikos, Violon/Alto : Pál Lászlo Szomora Piano : László Rácz Vilmos Csikos obtained his Master degree in the class of Yossif Ivanov at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with great distinction. 1st prize at the Andrea Postacchini International Violin Competition in 2007 (Fermo, Italy). 1st prize at the Remember Enescu International Violin Competition in 2007 (Sinaia, Romania). 1st prize at the "Young Belgian Talent" Competition in 2015 (Brussels, Belgium). 1st Prize at the Leonid Kogan International Violin Competition in 2017 (Brussels, Belgium). 1st Prize at the Henry Vieuxtemps International Violin Competition in 2020 (Verviers, Belgium). Pal Laszlo Szomora started to play violin at the age of 4 with his first teacher and his father Pal Szomora, later he was following lessons with Szasz Jozsefne in Budapest. From 2013 he has been studying with Mikhail Bezverkhny (winner of Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1976). In his early age he is a 1st prize winner of numerous national and international competitions: the Thrid Rados Deszo Violin Competition (Budapest, Hungary), International Competition ‘Jonge Solisten aan Zee’ (Oostende, Belgium), Solosists Competition ‘Jong Symfonisch Gent’ (Gent, Belgium), International Arthur Grumiaux Violin Competition (Brussels, Belgium). Laszlo Racz began learning piano at the age of 9. From 2006 to 2010 he studied with Gabor Nagy and Livia Kelemen. In 2008 he won the Bartok Bela competition in Budapest. At 14 he played in Vienna for Sophia Rachlin, who introduced him to Michaela Ursuleasa. In 2010 he entered Mihaela's “Class for Special Talents” at the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna. Laszlo then continued his work with Klaus Sticken. In 2014, Laszlo began his bachelor's degree in Thomas Kreuzberger's class. Close to the inner wonder of the dream: this is where Belgian lutenist Sofie Vanden Eynde and Iraqi oud player Saad Mahmood Jawad meet. They blend their favourite compositions from Downland to Fairuz, improvising on baroque bass lines and oriental maqamat. Far outside their everyday comfort zone, Sofie and Saad set out to discover the age-old kinship between their instruments. ********** Français ********** En Occident, les muses inspirent les artistes. Dans le monde arabe, les djinns exaucent les souhaits les plus secrets. La luthiste belge Sofie Vanden Eynde et l’oudiste irakien Saad Mahmood Jawad se rencontrent à la lisière des merveilles intérieures du rêve. Ils mélangent leurs compositions préférées, de Dowland à Fairuz, en improvisant sur des lignes de basse baroques et des maqâms orientaux.
