In the world of Ferox Tempus, environmental disasters have become normal after climate change. Cities have sunk, billions of people have perished, and the survivors of the bygone neoliberal culture cling to the ruins of civilization. The character, Lua, a posthumanist being played by Luanda Casella, is on a journey through this world. Along the way, she encounters extreme weather conditions, treks through mountains of plastic, survives fires and floods, flees with masses of climate migrants, encounters indigenous communities and joins their social revolt. She wages a constant battle to survive ecological collapse.Ferox Tempus plays with the format of a computer game. The main character Lua moves through ten levels of play, guided by the voice of an omniscient narrator who introduces each level and its corresponding transition principles. The voice imposes action rules, hints at objectives, weapons and traits, and recounts all the events within the dystopian environments created by climate change. Lua and the narrator are in constant conversation. In the live performance, the play is punctuated by comic interludes about banalities from the performer's own life. Through a stream-of-consciousness she talks about growing up in the 1980s, experimenting with psychedelic plants, participating in sexual orgies, adhering to mainstream veganism, or endlessly delivering tirades about emotional dependence. Meanwhile, she suggests that her voice is that of privilege. The soundtrack comes from a futuristic synthesizer from the 1980s, mixed with catastrophic weather reports. in English, surtitled in Dutchestimated duration: 1h 15 minBIOLuanda Casella is a Brazilian writer and performer trying to rescue the art of storytelling from its mediatized doomed destiny. Her research focuses broadly on the role of literature in the development of critical thinking; the ways in which individuals relate to narratives to create a sense of identity, to form their opinion of the world and ultimately protect themselves. By examining rhetorical concepts through humor, her work exposes language constructions, exploring unreliable narration in fiction and in everyday communicative processes. During the last few years, she has been studying 'the rhetoric of deception', investigating the use of storytelling in communication media, institutions, and politics. As a writer, Luanda has always been passionate about postmodern literature and all forms of experimental prose where fictional elements are incorporated in narratives with the same relevance as real facts. She calls them ‘radical prose experiments’ that invite audiences to share the process of producing meaning as a political and aesthetic gesture. In 2021, Luanda performed Killjoy Quiz in Beursschouwburg. In this play, she explores the linguistic nature of violence and resistance. The performance takes the form of an 'innocent' television quiz to strike hard at prejudice, deceptive language, sexism and paternalism.Luanda is an educator at LUCA School of Arts and KASK Conservatorium. She’s also been a guest in the following programs: DAS Theatre (Amsterdam), a.pass (Brussels), KABK (The Hague), PARTS (Brussels), amongst others. —concept, text & performance: Luanda Casella, dramaturgy: Sébastiaan Hendrickx, Carmen Hornbostel, stage direction & choreography: Lucius Romeo-Fromm, music composition: Pablo Casella, costume & make-up: Carly Heathcote, narrator: Kate McIntosch, projection & publication: Kahil Jansens, light design Dennis Diels, surtitling: Katelijne Laevens, production leader: Klaas Lievens, technical production management: Oliver Houttekiet, production: NTGent
