Moving between languages, geographies, voices and imaginations, Language: no
broblem is an attempt to investigate multilingualism. When speaking more than
one language becomes like a navigation compass, we can become absorbed by the
underlying power relations at play between the languages. How do they interlace
in one's mind in an oppressive environment? How could embodying them shape our
understanding of frontiers and displacement? We follow the reflexive, yet
strange, story of a train journey in Belgium, wherein the protagonist comes
across intriguing encounters. Her personal narrative is weaved with the ones of
her family members living under occupation. Their voices speak about how they
relate to Palestinian Arabic, their spoken mother tongue, in relation to Hebrew,
the official state language of where they live. It offers a space to listen to
one of the oft-silenced endeavours of colonialism: the active yet subtle
machineries that progressively and slowly, through generations, make sure the
settler's language prevails over the native. Marah Haj Hussein reveals the
layered forms of pressure, violence and domination a language can exert on
another, causing it to continuously transform and alter. The theatre becomes
thereby a stage for confusing and intersecting antagonistic realities to be put
in friction. With humour, anger, love and absurdity, the performance foremost
embraces the limits of translatability of a language, to keep thinking about
processes of resistance. • Marah Haj Hussein (b.1998) is a dancer, actress and
maker from Kofor Yassif in occupied Palestine. She is currently based in
Antwerp, where she graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor of Dance at the Royal
Conservatoire of Antwerp. In June 2023, she completed her master's degree in
Drama at KASK in Ghent. By merging these two disciplines, Marah challenges the
delineation that separates text from movement, while simultaneously searching
for possible ways to allow both into the performative space. In her work, Marah
investigates the concept and definition of mother tongue while exploring the
power dynamics between languages. This focus resulted in the performances Kilma
Hilwa & Zayt Zaitoun (2021), In Exile (2022) and Language: no
broblem (2023-2024). In addition to her own work, she works with with Alain
Platel & Bérengère Bodin, Action Zoo Humain & Chokri Ben Chikha, Frank Dierens
and Jitse Huysmans and Tuur Marinus. She won the Roel Verniers Prize by Het
Theaterfestival 2023 with her project proposal for Language: no broblem.

performances Kilma Hilwa & Zayt Zaitoun (2021), In Exile (2022) et Language : no
broblem (2023-2024).

The themes of this ninth edition of the festival are emergence and resilience.
What emerging phenomena are reflected in artistic practices? How can we
characterise and strengthen the resilience of these practices and their
players? By reinventing emergence as an ability to share, Africa is/in the
Future will simultaneously look at resilience as an ability to retain and
preserve. The festival is as always open to everyone, but there is a more
targeted invitation for black and Afro-descendant people from the continent and
diaspora. As in previous editions, Africa is/in the Future will also highlight
artistic initiatives and proposals by black and Afro-descendant people/artists
from the continent and the diaspora. • Africa is/in the Future is about
African contemporaneity. It started in 2016 at Cinéma Nova as a programme of
African science fiction films, Africa is/in the Future has since 2017 been a
multidisciplinary festival and is now produced by La Bellone.

partager, Africa is/in the Future s’intéressera au même moment à la résilience
Africa is/in the Future parle des contemporanéités africaines.
Africa is/in the Future est depuis 2017 un festival pluridisciplinaire,

Bovendien zal
• Africa is/in the Future gaat
over Afrikaanse eigentijdsheid. Begonnen in 2016 bij Cinéma Nova als een
programma met Afrikaanse sciencefictionfilms, is Africa is/in the Future sinds

After twelve volumes in which Maatschappij Discordia mirrored themselves to
female characters and authors (such as Susan Sontag, Elfriede Jelinek, ...) and
in which they tried to rewrite history where necessary, in volume 13 of the
Weiblicher Akt, they embark on a search for 'the other' via 'the other story'.
That is the story that is not only 'different' because it is told from a
different sex, but also from a different gender, culture or social class. During
this search for this other story, they run the risk of getting so lost in all
the stories and theories about stories that the whole 'otherness' seems to
dissolve into it...It is, among others, based on The 36 Dramatic Situations by
Georges Polti, The Unlived Life by Adam Philips and Holding Space by Aminata
Cairo. "What a relief, to see actors having such genuine and infectious fun
thinking out loud." — NRC"In the face of the other, I am made. Emmanuel Levinas

Following heavy rains, Maatschappij Discordia almost by accident (re)discovers
the complete works of German radical theatre maker Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956).
In their flooded workspace, the members of Discordia refuse to accept anything
as a coincidence. If anyone can offer us a fresh perspective in these times of
murky truths and razor-sharp polarisation, it is Brecht. The actors consider
Brecht's 'Verfremdungseffekt', a storytelling technique in which the audience is
made very aware of the theatre environment. He did this, for instance, by quick
set changes or an illogical sequence of scenes. Can his ideas on alienation help
us in a world of fake news or post-truth too?The actors engage with Brecht's
plays, letters and poetry. They once more take one of the benchmarks of Western
theatre history and unceremoniously turn it inside out. We are given new glasses
with which to look at the everyday reality around us. Nor are the others, those
who helped Brecht in his ideas around alienation, forgotten. • Maatschappij

From an autobiographical point of view, Pedro Sousa Loureiro goes on a queer
journey of discovery. He reflects on his own queer experiences, such as his
coming-out, in relation to family and the society he grew up in. Thanks to pop
culture heroes - think Madonna or The Spice Girls - Loureiro felt protected in
his own queer search. He translates these experiences into re-enactments on
stage. As a visitor, you first step between a number of video installations in
which queer bodies are given visibility. Then you slowly enter a film set, in
which the performers re-enact a number of scenes from Loureiro's personal life.
Between the re-enactments, the live cameras and the video installations, a new,
imaginary dimension emerges. In it lives the freedom and imagination needed to
deconstruct stereotypes about femininity and masculinity. At the same time,
Loureiro realises that these experiences are not universal. He travelled to
different social and cultural contexts, e.g. Armenia, for preliminary research,
to address other perspectives. Questions about the relationship between our ego
and personal growth, hierarchic power relations or personal struggles or
self-acceptance thus suddenly appear in a completely different light. Pedro
Sousa Loureira aka Feathering (°Coimbra, 1989) is currently studying the Master
in Theatre Directing at the RITCS in Brussels with a training scholarship in
Arts Abroad from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Pedro Sousa Loureiro has
worked with Maria João Rocha, Joris Lacoste, Lisbeth Gritter, Jorge Silva Melo,
Ricardo Neves-Neves and Sofia Ângelo, among others, and won the New Awards 2016
in the Theatre category with OS PATO BRAVO (2014-2023), a collaboration with
Joana Cotrim. Sousa Loureira's other work includes BEAUTIFUL HOUSE (2017) and
two radio shows, including SHOT DE LIBERDADE (2020).Andreia Morado (° Coimbra,
1983) is a transdisciplinary artist: dancer, choreographer, musician, performer
and activist. They hold a degree in Artistic Studies from the University of
Coimbra, and bachelor's degrees in Sociology, Anthropology and International
Relations. In 2015, they started the collective Movimento Sem Prega, which
develops experimental research in performance and pedagogy, where spaces of
performative sociability come to life to make other forms of life known. Their
work has been shown at ISELP, CAE - Center for Arts and Entertainment and
Casinho da Figueira, among others. Lien Jansen (°Turnhout, 1988 and living in
Brussels) Lien is active in the performing arts as a performer, dancer and
social worker. She has a degree in social work and development cooperation and
was lured to the friction between social work and artistic experimentation. In
2018, she started her own artistic track as a player in Transfocollect where she
has also been active as a facilitator on the floor of new participants since
2024. She is driven by the playful exploration of her own artistic language, as
well as that of her fellow human beings. Lien has performed at Transfocollect,
Rafah, Majoretteketet and Zinneke, among others, both in theatres and in public

ontdekkingsreis.
video-installaties waarin queer lichamen visibiliteit krijgen.
persoonlijke groei, hiërarchische machtsrelaties of persoonlijke worstelingen of
zelfaanvaarding staan zo plots in een compleet ander daglicht. Pedro Sousa

BarhoumiEchoes of Contemplation: Bathing Under Bombs On a Friday night,
following a day surrendered to the camera's gaze, our eyes relinquished control.
After immersing ourselves in the timeless dance of existence, capturing the
silent choreography of inanimate objects, we found ourselves steeped in the
daily exhibition of motion that surrounds us. We walked through a gallery of
unseen spirits with unadorned eyes, hair billowing shapeless in the wind, and
the colourless collage of urban debris strewn about the streets. Having spent
the day capturing these motionless entities, just before projecting them to the
point of exhaustion of observation, we retreated to a bath - the pivotal moment
of reflection and transformation, where the boundaries between observer and
observed blur into a singular, immersive experience.

recordings of the past but also imagination of the future. It questions how to
read dance and share it with a diverse audience. Inspired by Roland Barthes’
idea of "The Death of the Author", we concentrate on different experiences that
come together, drift apart or shift around. How far is this accessible to an
outsider? Just like the audience, the performers and the creators speak
different languages but also have things in common. They have a shared interest

been acquired and lived. We are imagining the future, and this piece is part of

2025. • Carolina Mendonça is a choreographer, performer and dramaturg. She holds
a Master in Choreography and Performance from the University of Giessen in
Germany and graduated in Performing Arts from ECA-USP. She works as a dramaturge

instortende wereld? Tijdens ROT Garden toont Mendonça een eerste work in
• Carolina

A two-day training/hanging-out/sharing practice for artists/researchers focusing
on the variational aspects of the genre of horror. In this setting, one can get
introduced to the historical elements of the genre, such as zombies, gore and
tortured ghostly demons, vicious animals and cannibal witches, as well as
medieval serial killer monsters, unnatural disasters and Frankenstein projects.
Parallelly foregrounding different scales and registers of horror for
reconsideration, ranging from speculative fiction, and sci-fi cinema, to
medieval bestiaries, inducing “bad feelings” such as fear, uncanny, awe, mania,
panic, loss, tension and anxiety. The participants will start by reimagining a
positive aspect of their practices, locating the value system, and deciding,
with the help of the others, what can be turned into horror. Different from
critical reflection on horror, to practice horror is to enter a symbolic realm
of expressiveness at the vicinity of horror, where another kind of relation to
the articulation of values becomes possible. In this turn, parts of an artistic
practice can get a chance of being thought of as “fucked-up”. It is a sharing
environment, where we present to each other: to what extent what we do can
become a disaster, cause damage, torture, or simply be horrific? This workshop
is developed in the crossline between Sina’s interest in medieval bestiaries and
Adrijana’s preoccupation with artistic anxieties within their own artistic work.
The workshop is open for registering and is addressed to artists/researchers
interested in sharing, horror, fabulous writing and humor, and are prepared to
devote two afternoons to the workshop. If you are interested, please register
at tickets@kaai.be and add a short paragraph or sentence about yourself/your
practice/your expectations from the workshop. The setting of the workshop is
also imagined as an installation, a playful ambience with horror accessories and
references, which will be open to the public after 18:00 on both days. On Friday
at 18:30, they will do a public presentation of the workshop. PROGRAMMEWorkshop

(self-)institutionalized structures. Taking context as a partner, she responds
to established structures in the visual arts, pushing the boundaries between
making, mediation and production. • Sina Seifee is an artist based between
Tehran, Brussels and Cologne. He explores experimental cartographies and modes
of subjectivity, using radical poetry and perverted etymology. He received his
master’s in media arts from KHM (Cologne) in 2014 and graduated from a.pass

marteling of gewoonweg afschuwelijk?

Philip Janssens is extending his series of woven curtains, utilizing a
reflective textile that manipulates light to create a floating effect. His
sewing and weaving techniques induce a meditative experience for viewers,
stimulating sensory perception. He emphasizes the subjective interpretation of
his work, asserting that its meaning resides within the viewer's imagination and
personal memories. The challenging visual comprehension and photography of his
art highlight its ambiguity, blurring the distinction between physical and
digital realms.• Philip Janssens' work is imbued with a strong fascination for
scale, the immense and the atmospheric, for the uncanny, the anonymous and the
objectified. His sculptures or installations seem to elevate physical,
atmospheric phenomena such as the optical play of light, refraction &
reflection.

Choreographer and researcher Sara Manente has since 2018 focused on the
intersection between live art and living cultures and in ROT, these two worlds
come together. For this editorial (ROT magazine) and curatorial (ROT Garden)
project, she draws inspiration from fermentation techniques and the world of
fungi. At the Kaaistudios, Manente is setting up Black Garden, the third part of
ROT Garden. Each ROT Garden is a landscape installation consisting of sounds,
smells, texts, textures and dance. This Black Garden focuses on the dark world
of infections and 'immunitarianism' (the political control of the immune system)
full of sci-fi, horror and doom. Together with befriended Brussels creators,
Sara Manente will activate the garden for two days. Philippe Janssens shows his
installation The Commerce of Relationships there, Carolina Mendonça presents a
