Description

“Can you still hear the bombs? I can hear them.”
What if you grew up in a war zone? How do you cope as a child when you are exposed to political conflict on a daily basis?
The choreographer and performer Samaa Wakim grew up in the occupied Palestinian territories. During this solo dance performance, she asks herself how these experiences impact her identity. Through movement and sound, she remembers her youth and the imaginary world she created in order to survive. Driven by her own sounds and live music by Samar Haddad King, she goes back and forth between fear and hope, between sounds that used to scare her and sounds that used to bring her comfort.

Can we understand someone’s oeuvre without knowing her personal life? At the
invitation of the festival, theatre makers Carolina Bianchi – who caused a
furore at last year’s Festival d’Avignon – and Carolina Mendonça enter into
conversation with filmmaker and writer Chantal Akerman. Why are we so obsessed
with finding out the truth about someone? In Ma mère rit, Akerman wrote: “I
don’t have a life, I’ve never learned how to make one for myself”. According to
Bianchi and Mendonça, the personal lives of female artists are often scrutinised
to the point of eclipsing their work. Now, they propose a dialogue with Akerman,
about sexuality, heredity and the autobiographical writing process. With this
venture, Bianchi and Mendonça continue their investigation on women artists of
previous generations and on an expanded form of motherhood, two crucial concepts
in their artistic path. They bring together fragments of Ma mère rit – in which
Akerman wrote her memoirs while caring for her ailing mother – and references to
Les Rendez-vous d’Anna, a movie in which she spent a night with her mother in a
hotel close to the Gare du Midi. A layered reading performance inspired by
Akerman’s mood and language, in an abandoned cinema, some streets away from that
very hotel room.

How do we feel the impact of events which are so much larger than us, yet move
through us, and animate and activate our bodies all the time? Ten performers
enact a glacially morphing tableau vivant on a mobile raft-like stage. Their
voices create a score that grows larger and resonates as they clutch, careen and
cleave in a space too small to contain them, spilling off the edges. The scenes
shown reference at times images from classical iconography. Tenderness and
violence, sensuality and brute force cohabitate. The audience sits all around as
if watching a boxing match, embanking the performers, close enough to smell
their sweat and feel the steam of the spiralling scenes.
Celebrated American choreographer Faye Driscoll returns to the festival with a
multi-sensory flesh and breath sculpture made of bodies, sounds, scents, liquids
and objects. She pushes her performers to their limits in this compelling,
adventurous work, presented in the impressive Horta Hall, originally an
exhibition space for sculptures. Weathering is an ode to the inexhaustible
physical power of queer bodies.

In this double bill, we are asked to rethink the relationship with our hands and
reflect on their role in the present, past and future.
By touching, we create relationships of proximity while distancing ourselves
from the rest of our surroundings. But our touch is increasingly mediated by
technologies that change how we experience ourselves and others. In Begüm
Erciyas’ performance Hands Made, the hands of the audience will take centre
stage. Accompanied by a soundtrack, spectators are asked to observe their hand
and that of their neighbour, creating an effect of intimacy and alienation.
Separated from the rest of the body, our hands become the focus of a reflection
on handwork and touch. What have these hands been busy with? Who or what will
they touch in the future?
Nothing But Fingers is the other half of this double bill, a performance by
visual artist Moe Satt. He became fascinated by the role of hand gestures in
South African hunting communication as well as traditional dance in Myanmar and
Southeast Asia, where human gestures can take animal forms. With dancer Liah
Frank, he explores the expressive potential of hands and their ability to direct
energy flows in the body, an extraordinary choreography in which the hands
dictate the rest of the body until the final surrender.

omgeving treden.

On 20.05 the performance is followed by an aftertalk.
This story unfolds in the north of Lebanon, at Nahr el Bared, in a refugee camp
hastily set up to shelter Palestinian families fleeing the Nakba of 1948. Years
later, in 2007, war broke out between the Lebanese army and an infiltrated
Islamist group, leading to the destruction of part of the camp. It was at that
moment that the first traces appeared of Orthosia, an ancient Roman city, which
vanished after being overwhelmed by a tsunami in 551 AD and which, despite 15
centuries of vain attempts to find it, no-one could ever have imagined finding
there. But how best to deal with this major discovery, as excavations would mean
a ‘second displacement’ for the refugee families? The filmmakers and artists
Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige use photography, installations, video and
cinema to question the account of the imagination and writing about the story.
Through this performance, created for the festival, they uncover the palimpsest
of constant cycles of construction and destruction, calling on the possible
narratives about the underground worlds. A dizzying performance, full of
(dis)continuities, upheavals and regeneration, which plunges us into a past that
feels particularly close to the present.

Les Passagées is a venue dedicated to the creation of artistic and culinary
performances, housed in the historic house of the painter Eugène Broerman in
Brussels.
Our first performance INNER LANDS & SCAPES will bring together 6 artists from
different disciplines, as well as Michelin-starred Japanese chef Chiho Kanzaki.
It's a multidisciplinary artistic experience combining dance with choreographer
Benoît Nieto Duran and sound creations by artist Raphaël Vens. There will also
be three 'prepared pianos' by Polish virtuoso Barbara Drazkov scattered around
the house, enveloping the monumental works of visual artist Valérie Novello in
sound. And at certain moments, the haunting voice of actress Marie-Rose Meysman
will share the words of author Ryoko Sekiguchi. As the performance progresses,
several of chef Chiho Kanzaki's creations will be served up.
The 6 artists have worked together for several months to forge deep links
between their respective arts and works. The aim is to take the public on a
journey through a global artistic landscape in which the works respond to each
other and engage in dialogue, layer by layer.
Given that we're working on the connections between art and food in relation to
the body, we've opted for a limited, intimate number of 30 participants per
evening.
With this project, we want to work towards a sustainable and respectful world.
How can we do this? In our view, becoming aware of what passes through our
bodies is one of the keys to protecting living things in the long term. It's
about gently reconnecting with our inner sensations, our invisible landscape, so
that this effect can take root and last.
After the approximately 1h30 performance, during which we will be serving
several culinary creations linked to the works, a dish (and drinks) by chef
Chiho Kanzaki, will be served to the participants and artists during a meal
together, in order to experience a slow transition between the sensations of the
performance and everyone's return to their everyday lives...

salope »
