salope »

The body of the artist proposes itself as a living altar, offered for a moment
of reflection, meditation, prayer, and request, not for a god or saint, but for
the world.
In the Christian religion, lighting a candle opens one’s heart to God and thus
raises a prayer towards him. It is also a way of expressing one’s attachment to
a saint in particular by making a request or even thanking him. An offering
accompanies this approach.
The artist's body proposes itself as a living altar, offered for reflection,
meditation, prayer, and request, not for a god or a saint, but for the world.
Here, the ritual is proposed to allow oneself to express their concern, fear,
and sorrow for the world - it is a way of reacting to the environmental despair
that we are currently experiencing.
This performance is inspired both by the artist’s rituals in a women’s circle to
celebrate, among other things, the solstices and equinoxes, and Joanna Macy’s
essay, “Acting with Environmental Despair” which asks the question: “Can we
recognize our sorrow for the world and live with it in a way that affirms our
existence and frees our power to act?”
A year ago, the first version of this performance was presented during the
Trouble Festival. In this context, more than sixty sorrows were laid at the foot
of the altar. These anonymous sorrows will be engraved next to each other on one
of the walls of the exhibition, during several one-off sessions between April 11
and September 1.
Barbara Salomé Felgenhauer (1992, Huy, Belgium) lives and works in Brussels. A
multidisciplinary artist, her practice covers photography, film, performance,
and installation. The question of narrative and the power of words and ideas
runs through her work. She uses storytelling as an experience of emancipation
and empowerment from gender norms and stereotypes and as a creative force of the
universe to induce new relationships to worlds.
She graduated from the photography workshop at ESA Saint-Luc in Liège in 2013
and from ENSAV La Cambre in Brussels in 2022. She obtained her master’s degree
with Grand Distinction and the Boghossian Foundation Prize 2022 with her project
Terrapolis.

multidisciplinair kunstenaar omvat haar praktijk fotografie, film, performance

On 20.05 the performance is followed by an aftertalk.
This story unfolds in the north of Lebanon, at Nahr el Bared, in a refugee camp
hastily set up to shelter Palestinian families fleeing the Nakba of 1948. Years
later, in 2007, war broke out between the Lebanese army and an infiltrated
Islamist group, leading to the destruction of part of the camp. It was at that
moment that the first traces appeared of Orthosia, an ancient Roman city, which
vanished after being overwhelmed by a tsunami in 551 AD and which, despite 15
centuries of vain attempts to find it, no-one could ever have imagined finding
there. But how best to deal with this major discovery, as excavations would mean
a ‘second displacement’ for the refugee families? The filmmakers and artists
Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige use photography, installations, video and
cinema to question the account of the imagination and writing about the story.
Through this performance, created for the festival, they uncover the palimpsest
of constant cycles of construction and destruction, calling on the possible
narratives about the underground worlds. A dizzying performance, full of
(dis)continuities, upheavals and regeneration, which plunges us into a past that
feels particularly close to the present.

"WARNING: This video may potentially trigger seizures for people with
photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised."
A multi-part video and dance performance, profoundly influenced by the
turbulence and uncertainties of modern life. The work opens with an
expressionistic video installation that envelops the audience, guiding them
through the inner dialogue and psychological landscape of a contemporary artist
grappling with their place in the world. This immersive video component serves
as an avant-garde prelude, setting the tone and emotional timbre.
The installation seamlessly transitions into a live modern dance performance
accompanied by an original musical score. The dancers' powerful, athletic
movements embody the internal conflicts, doubts, and driving ambitions coursing
through the artist's psyche. Their bodies become kinetic poetry, at times
frenetic and disjointed, at others flowing with lyrical grace. The choreography
explicitly reflects the duality of the artistic experience - the passion, the
struggle, the questioning inherent to the creative process.
Through this symbiotic fusion of varied media, the lines blur between audience
and performer, reality and psychological realm. The artists do not merely
express their personal narratives, but tap into resonant universal themes - the
human quest for meaning, purpose, and self-actualization in a fast-paced,
fractured world. It is both an introspective journey and an invitation for
collective catharsis.

How do we feel the impact of events which are so much larger than us, yet move
through us, and animate and activate our bodies all the time? Ten performers
enact a glacially morphing tableau vivant on a mobile raft-like stage. Their
voices create a score that grows larger and resonates as they clutch, careen and
cleave in a space too small to contain them, spilling off the edges. The scenes
shown reference at times images from classical iconography. Tenderness and
violence, sensuality and brute force cohabitate. The audience sits all around as
if watching a boxing match, embanking the performers, close enough to smell
their sweat and feel the steam of the spiralling scenes.
Celebrated American choreographer Faye Driscoll returns to the festival with a
multi-sensory flesh and breath sculpture made of bodies, sounds, scents, liquids
and objects. She pushes her performers to their limits in this compelling,
adventurous work, presented in the impressive Horta Hall, originally an
exhibition space for sculptures. Weathering is an ode to the inexhaustible
physical power of queer bodies.

What does it mean to be a dancer when dancing is prohibited? How do you feel
when forced to refrain from doing something you have dedicated your entire life
to? Starting from these questions, Iranian playwright Nasim Ahmadpour and
director Ali Asghar Dashti create a breathtaking performance. On stage, two
completely immobile dancers describe the movements they would have made if they
could dance. These descriptions of a hand gesture, of a step to the side,
entrust us spectators with reconstructing a choreography that is no longer
possible to create. The detailed and touching account intertwines with episodes
from the recent past, like the story of theatre director Hamid Samandarian.
Banned from working in theatres in the early 1980s, his company decided to open
a restaurant together. When their first customers entered, the performers felt
the same stress as if this were an audience entering the theatre hall. Can
anyone stop being who they are? In another episode, an imprisoned director
wonders if, by making his fellow prisoners act, he could stop being a prisoner
for a moment. Taking its title from a song verse, We Came to Dance is a
theatrical gem and a love letter to the stage.

We Came to Dance, dat zijn titel
