Nothing is what it seems at the old English country house Bly. When a new
governess takes up her position, she is told never to leave the children alone!
The shocking confrontation with the ghosts of her predecessor and a certain
Peter Quint soon makes it clear to her why. As protecting the children becomes
increasingly difficult, disturbing questions arise: What horrible acts took
place before her arrival? How innocent are the children? And are you really
seeing what’s before your eyes?
Drawing on Henry James’s intriguing ghost story, Benjamin Britten composed a
psychological thriller in chamber opera format with The Turn of the Screw.
Director Andrea Breth keeps the mystery intact, turning House Bly into a
labyrinth in which the characters are not the only ones to lose themselves.
Together with conductor Antonio Méndez, she will turn the screw on your
imagination as far as it goes…
Are you under 30? Then attend this opera on the Young Opera Night (10.5.2024)
and enjoy a free reception and exclusive after-event.

composé, avec The Turn of the Screw, un thriller psychologique sous forme

Britten met The Turn of the Screw een psychologische thriller in
kameroperaformaat.

Description

In death you will find fulfilment, in your neighbour perhaps the truth behind
love. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs
– posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century
– sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.
In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering,
Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von
Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy
lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us:
what if death brings peace?
The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and
charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good
friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and
‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet
of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this
season.
After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others,
soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage.
Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled
evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of
song.

« Tell
me the Truth About Love », « Funeral Blues », « Johnny » et « Calypso », toutes

Benjamin Brittens vooroorlogse Cabaret Songs. ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’,
The Turn of the Screw
brengen.

help but notice. She has a stage presence only matched by the clarityof her
voice – couple this with her dedication to music that swings, and you have the
jazz musician’s singer.” – James Morrison Multi-Instrumentalist (AU) For these
intimate concerts, British/Australian jazz vocalist Hetty Kate has invited
celebrated musicians, pianist Maxime Moyaerts and bassist Victor Foulon to join
her. As the trio explores classics and curiosities from the swing, cool jazz and
bop eras you’ll discover the joys of the jazz trio, a simplicity allowing each
musician, and importantly, each song to shine. “Like Peggy Lee on a Vespa” Marc
Myers, Jazzwax Magazine (USA) Described as “the real deal” and “one of the best
swing singers on the scene today”, jazz singer Hetty Kate has been pursuing an
impressive international career for over a decade. From intimate clubs to the
most prestigious stages such as The Sydney Opera House, Hetty’s career has taken
her all over the world, from New Zealand to New York. With her clear voice and
remarkable intonation, reminiscent of the singers of the 1950s, Hetty Kate
swings the beautiful songs of the American Songbook – from Gershwin to Dameron,
from swing to bop. You’ll notice that Hetty “honors the composer” by staying
true to the message and melody of his composition, and uses improvisation in a
way that never interferes with the lyrics. It is this rare quality and a
compelling ease on stage that has attracted the attention of musicians and
audiences the world over. Over the course of her career, Hetty has released ten
critically acclaimed albums and performed at many festivals including the New
York Winter Jazz Festival (USA), the Sapporo Jazz Festival (Japan), the Prague
Proms (Czech Republic), the Melbourne, Sydney and Perth International Jazz
Festivals (Australia), the Cavell Leitch International Jazz Festival (New
Zealand), thePeniscola Jazz Festival (Spain), the Piacenza Jazz Festival
(Italy). Hetty also toured extensively with award-winning Australian jazz
musician James Morrison for many years, notably as the featured vocalist on his

It’s with great pleasure that we welcome comedian Bill Bailey back on the
Belgian stage! He’ll bring his new show ‘Thoughtifier’ on 4 May 2024 at La
Madeleine Brussels.
Bill Bailey is delighted to get back on the road with the announcement of an
ARENA TOUR for February 2024. With his trademark musical stylings and
characteristic wit, Bill returns to the live stage in… Thoughtifier!
At a point in our evolution when it seems as if we’re sleepwalking into a world
where humans might be redundant, and much of what we do can be done better and
more efficiently by machines, what better time to celebrate our own flawed
humanity. And who better a guide to lead us than Bill… To take us on a jaunt
through the error-strewn, distracted, crumb-festooned, sometimes magnificent
history of human thought and how it might help us survive in this brave new
world. A magical, musical mystery tour of the human mind, along with some other
pressing matters about whales, biophilia, unrequited love and other thoughts.

chante. Oui on chante !
plier ?
Un spectacle lumineux, pourtant. Car toujours, on espère.

Louis and Rau are long-time friends, a friendship which arose from their shared
search for an art of reality. “The existential core of theatre is the same as
that of literature: to show what is difficult to show. Theatre should not be a
safe space,” Louis wrote about Rau’s play Familie.
With The Interrogation, Rau and Louis present a very personal text about doubt
and failure. The play was written in the spring of 2021, at the time
commissioned by Kunstenfestivaldesarts, IIPM & NTGent, but it never premiered.
Now, it finally takes to the stage. Performed by NTGent ensemble actor Arne De
Tremerie, The Interrogation is a ‘demonstration of vulnerability’, a moment of
poetic stillness.
Can art help us escape our biography, or is art merely a reflection of a failed
escape? “It’s a deeply melancholic play, a fragmentary play, a tender play,”
said Louis and Rau in an interview – a constant exchange of thoughts about
theatre and reality, failure and transformation, fiction and truth, about
becoming and being.
