A collection of famous opera arias by 19th-century Italian composers will serve as a contrast: Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi, Ruggero Leoncavallo and Vincenzo Bellini. Transcribed for string quartet, these arias transport the lyricism and emotion of opera singing into the sound of strings.
The evening concludes with Nino Rota's String Quartet in E minor, composed in 1956. Rota, known for his film scores, demonstrates in this composition his mastery of the classical string quartet form, combining melodic language with innovative harmonic and rhythmic structures, fusing classical tradition with modern sensibility.
An original, whirlwind journey through the evolution of Italian lyrical language, across genres and centuries, in a quartet formation that at first glance seems traditional, but is incredibly versatile.
