'One Drop' is a speculative summoning, a decolonial dream, an autopsy of the Western stage, and an operetta. Slipping in meanings and leaking through different categories, the work dives into the poetics and politics of relations, creating a stage that awakens the ghosts and connections lost or forgotten.

The work's title refers to two frameworks: the "one drop" rhythm, a reggae-style drum beat, and the "one drop rule" of the Race Separation Act in the United States from the early 1900s. According to this rule, a single drop of “Black blood” made a person “Black” despite their appearance. Through these starting points, the work interrogates the ghosts of the Western stage and its entanglements with capitalism, coloniality, and modernity.

'One Drop' continues Sonya Lindfors' series of works dealing with power, representation, and Black body politics. This is the second time Sonya presents at Beursschouwburg, following 'Cosmic Latte' in 2019.

ABOUT

Sonya Lindfors is a choreographer and artistic director of Cameroonian-Finnish descent, known for her work in facilitating, community organizing, and education. Her works address themes of Blackness, representation, power structures, and decolonial dreaming. Lindfors balances her artistic endeavours with her roles in education, consistently advocating for anti-racist and feminist platforms that empower and enable radical collective dreaming.

'One Drop' est une invocation spéculative, un rêve décolonial, une autopsie de la scène occidentale et une opérette. Glissant entre les significations et se faufilant à travers différentes catégories, cette œuvre plonge dans la poétique et la politique des relations, créant une scène qui réveille les fantômes et les connexions perdues ou oubliées.

Le titre de l'œuvre fait référence à deux cadres : le rythme "one drop," un battement de tambour de style reggae, et la "règle de la goutte unique" du Race Separation Act aux États-Unis du début des années 1900. Selon cette règle, une seule goutte de "sang noir" suffisait à qualifier une personne de "noire," indépendamment de son apparence. À partir de ces points de départ, l'œuvre interroge les fantômes de la scène occidentale et ses enchevêtrements avec le capitalisme, la colonialité et la modernité.

'One Drop' poursuit la série d'œuvres de Sonya Lindfors qui traite du pouvoir, de la représentation et de la politique du corps noir. C'est la deuxième fois que Sonya se présente au Beursschouwburg, après 'Cosmic Latte' en 2019.

Sonya Lindfors est une chorégraphe et directrice artistique d'origine camerounaise-finlandaise, connue pour son travail en facilitation, organisation communautaire et éducation. Ses œuvres abordent les thèmes de la noirceur, de la représentation, des structures de pouvoir et des rêves décoloniaux. Lindfors équilibre ses efforts artistiques avec ses rôles dans l'éducation, plaidant constamment pour des plateformes anti-racistes et féministes qui permettent et renforcent les rêves collectifs radicaux.

'One Drop' is een voorstelling die verschillende werelden samenbrengt: een speculatieve oproeping, een dekoloniaal droombeeld en een operette. Het stuk onderzoekt de poëzie en politieke betekenis van relaties en brengt vergeten of verloren verbindingen en verhalen weer tot leven.

De titel, 'One Drop', heeft twee betekenissen: het "one drop" ritme, een drumbeat in reggaestijl, en de "one drop rule" uit de Verenigde Staten in de vroege 1900s. Volgens deze regel maakte één druppel “Zwart bloed” een persoon “Zwart”, ongeacht hun uiterlijk. Met deze thema's onderzoekt de voorstelling de geschiedenis van het Westerse podium en de vervlochtenheid met kapitalisme, kolonialisme en moderniteit.

'One Drop' maakt deel uit van een reeks voorstellingen over macht, representatie en de politieke betekenis van het Zwarte lichaam. Dit is de tweede keer dat Sonya te zien is in Beursschouwburg, na 'Cosmic Latte' in 2019.

Bio

Sonya Lindfors is een choreograaf en artistiek directeur van Kameroense-Finse afkomst, bekend om haar gemeenschapswerk en educatieve projecten. Haar voorstellingen behandelen thema's als Zwartheid, representatie, machtsstructuren en dekoloniale dromen. Sonya combineert haar artistiek werk met educatieve projecten en pleit voor antiracistische en feministische platforms die radicaal en collectief dromen mogelijk maken en versterken.
