It is in the third century BC that the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca
embarked on a mind-boggling journey: marching with 70,000 soldiers and 40
elephants, he entered Italy via Spain, France and the Alps, in an attempt to
shake the Roman empire to its foundations. Hannibal ad portas!
This new creation by Michael De Cock and Junior Mthombeni tells the story of the
Punic Wars and the birth of Europe from the perspective of the Carthaginian
uber-general. It is a performance about great clashes. The Punic Wars as a
metaphor for all the conflicts being fought on the edges of the continent today.
The figure of Hannibal as a lens through which we can explore the different
visions of contemporary Europe. For, absurd as it may seem, the idea that there
are once again ‘barbarians’ at the Southern borders of Europe, ready to wipe out
its history, seems to be resurfacing. Through the unique synergy of opera and
slam, contemporary dance and acting, Hannibal opens a window onto the past,
present and future of the West. For the makers, Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and
Aeneas – about the betrayal of the Carthaginian queen, the mythical origin for
the conflict between Europe and North Africa – is the starting point of a
performance in which the fusion of arts and cultures is ultimately not something
to be feared, but celebrated.

IIIe siècle av. J.-C.

Henry Purcells opera Dido and Aeneas

The hall lights are still on when the sound of trickling, rippling water slowly
fills the room. What follows is a musically intense and visually poetic
performance that moves among and around the audience. In HAMEL, YouYou Group
starts in the 13th century fairy tale about Pied Piper of Hamelin. The Pied
Piper exterminated the rats in the troubled town of Hamelin with the power of
music, but then used the same trick to kidnap the children when his fee was not
paid. This vocal performance turns the river where the rats drowned into the
protagonist which flows through the solid theatre architecture in the
performers' voices. YouYouGroup delves into enchanting musical practices as
instruments and connects them with a powerful and pared-down stage design. •
YouYou Group started as a collective effort to understand how a specific use of
voice can instantly create a sense of belonging and community. Through various
techniques related to the youyou or trill cry, the group brings deeply vibrant
vocal performances that thrill spaces and audiences. The group now brings its
engaging approach with a ritualistic slant to the theatre. Each YouYou Group
creation builds on the practices the group has developed and nurtured since its
start in 2014, thanks to all its members.

“My name is Tiziano Cruz, I am from a town called San Francisco that belongs to
the Valle Grande department of the province of Jujuy, in the North of Argentina.
I was born and grew up on the border between Chile and Bolivia; nine indigenous
communities have passed through the lands where I spent my childhood: the
Atacama, the Kollas, the Guarani, the Tobas, the Ocloyas, the Omaguacas, the
Tilianes and the Toaras. From this place, I think this piece which I have called
Soliloquio (I woke up and hit my head against the wall).”Soliloquio is a tribute
to erased indigenous cultures, performed together by Tiziano Cruz and the Andean
communities of Brussels, shouted under the open sky, on the streets that lead to
the theatre, to then push its doors wide open. By forging links and building
bridges with local groups, the artist attempts, through dance, to reconnect with
a culture that has been brutally fractured by colonialism, to reactivate a lost
collective memory.Drawing on childhood memories and on 58 letters Cruz wrote to
his mother during the pandemic, Soliloquio deploys dense poetics and poignant
imagery, exposing how the lower classes have been increasingly marginalized
while indigenous bodies in a white-dominated capitalist system have been made
invisible. Tiziano Cruz enters the previously unreachable field of contemporary
theatre with a manifesto for the recognition of differences, a scathing critique
of those in power who perpetuate discrimination, exclusion and injustice,
including the art world. As generous as it is urgent, Soliloquio is an
invitation to build the future instead of simply waiting for it. • Tiziano Cruz

gegaan collectief geheugen. Tijdens de pandemie schreef Cruz achtenvijftig

Haunted by the image of Troy drowning in blood and flames, Aeneas travels the
seas. He lands in Carthage, home to the beautiful Dido. At first cold and
fearful, the princess soon develops an all-consuming passion for the Trojan and
accepts his proposal of marriage. But a message urges Aeneas to continue his
journey without delay. In despair, he breaks off their engagement and returns to
port to prepare his ship. At the last moment, Aeneas turns around and declares
his love for Dido once again, but Dido rejects him before slowly dying of a
broken heart.
Based on Henry Purcell’s essential baroque opera, choreographer Blanca Li
revisits the myth of Dido and Aeneas for ten dancers in this decisively
contemporary production. Drawing on her experience in film, fashion and music –
including prestigious collaborations with the likes of Pedro Almodóvar, Daft

Impossible love, a theme as old as humankind, portrayed and sung by the very
greatest. For their latest dance creation, Rosalba Torres Guerrero and Koen
Augustijnen take their inspiration from Claudio Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo and
his dramatic madrigal Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. Two stories about
iconic couples whose doomed love affair also captivated many other baroque
composers. Amours Aveugles, performed musically by two accordionists alongside
soprano Liesbeth Devos and tenor Ed Lyon, does not shy away from the great
emotions these works evoke. Nor from the big questions: How can we become so
blinded by love that we commit the irrevocable? Why do we sometimes inflict the
most pain on those we love the most? And what meaning can myths still have today
in our uber-digitized and highly individualized world?

In 1974, admist a hunger strike by undocumented workers in Paris, the Movement
of Arab Workers created a singular political action: presenting a candidate for

Bouchra Khalili now creates a video installation, consisting of two video works

she films a halqa, a centuries-old practice of public storytelling in Morocco,
to people arranged in a circle. In this halqa, Djellali’s campaign is narrated
by a storyteller in Marrakesh, implicitly forming a new circle linking the
diaspora and North Africa. What does this gap between 1974 and 2024 tell us, a

Khalili emphasises the importance of remembering past political strategies as a

The spaceship ‘In-Between’ travels through the universe with a crew of four
humans and an android tasked with exporting the Japanese language to other
galaxies. Toshiki Okada creates this theatrical gem, in which a science fiction
reality meets the everyday poetry of group dynamics in a confined space. For
this project, he decided to work with four actors who are not native Japanese
speakers. By making them custodians of Japanese culture, Okada reminds us that
language simply belongs to those who speak it while using the spaceship as a
metaphor to critically reflect on Japan’s colonial past in Southeast Asia, its
linguistic expansion and the politics of language. Before our eyes, the four
humans interact with the android and an alien that appears on board while the
spaceship passes through a space time tunnel. Together, they open a delicate
dialogue on origins and nostalgia for the earth. From the window, we observe
them, or perhaps they observe us, those who remain on earth. Suddenly,
‘In-Between’ isn’t just the name of a spaceship or a tunnel between two areas of
the galaxy, but a hymn to the identities that exist beyond a defined one, in
between. Toshiki Okada returns to the festival with a performance of rarefied
beauty, suspended in the absence of gravity.

japonaise vers d’autres galaxies.

Ten dancers timidly balance en pointe with their backs to the audience while
Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Swan plays. So opens HATCHED ENSEMBLE. While hiding
their faces, they display small, handcrafted ironwork sculptures. The
captivating choreography is the brainchild of South African artist Mamela
Nyamza, who unapologetically demystifies and deconstructs the history of dance
while trampling the norms and standards of the classics. Using simple household
materials – clothes pegs, a clothes line, plastic ponchos and red aprons – the
dancers evoke images of domestic labour that evolve in precise and touching
fashion. Referencing Western classical music, dance and South African vocal
scores, they juxtapose the movement vocabularies of diverse cultures. The
dancers convey deeply personal stories that challenge race and gender norms,
their movements peppered with moments of miniaturised ballet performed with
frantic, joyful release. Minor gestures and major sensitivity combine to open up
an entire universe unknown to dance history, overflowing with urgency and subtle
virtuosity.

danse.

Zuid-Afrikaanse choreografe Mamela Nyamza.

No one flees for fun. Ali is 12 years old when he leaves Somalia. He travels the
dangerous road from the Horn of Africa to the heart of Europe. Along the way,
friendships are made despite the hardships and hope is found amidst the horror.
Ali has to cross several countries, a desert and the Mediterranean along with
hundreds of migrants seeking a better future. He arrives at the Brussels South
railway station in 2019, alone, without knowing a word of French or Dutch. He is
14 years old …
This incredible epic is the true story of Ali Abdi Omar, adapted for the opera
in collaboration with Ali himself. This moving creation reconstructs all the
stages of his journey. A sensory experience where electronic music, voice,
string and wind instruments, percussion and dance pay a vibrant tribute to the
resilience of a young boy forced, like so many others, to leave his family and
home in order to survive.

The music of Ali is the result of a whole new approach to opera composition. In
their score, Grey Filastine, Walid Ben Selim and Brent Arnold combine the
propulsive power of electro beats and live percussion with the nuance of an
orchestral sound and the raw, direct emotion of the human voice. It is music at
the crossroads of different styles, influences and modes, able to express the
most diverse landscapes and emotional states of Ali’s journey.
A week before opening night, we welcome the three composers for an accessible
introductory talk at the KVS TOP. They will introduce you to the world of
contemporary opera composition, where the combination of digital software,
pre-recorded soundscapes and live music offers limitless possibilities. The
evening will end with a convivial reception in the KVS Bar.

In CASCADE, Meg Stuart and seven dancers reset the clock, challenging reality to
take on new forms. Balancing on the edge of a world that is rapidly
disappearing, they plunge into another dimension. They go in search of a secret
passage, a future playground and refuge. They find their driving force in
disruption. Running, falling and getting up again capsizes their bodies as their
principles transform and take on new interpretations. CASCADE is an
unconditional surrender to what we do not know about the other person. Following

chance to see it here.
• American choreographer Meg Stuart lives and works in Brussels and Berlin. Her
company Damaged Goods has a long-term collaboration with Kaaitheater, where she

Manuele Infante has long been exploring how the boundary between that which is
human and non-human is created only then to demolish it. In Horizon, she
interacts with her father, with whom she shares an unbridled curiosity for the
unknown. Although they approach the subject from different angles – he an
astronomer, she an artist – one topic keeps cropping up in their conversations:
the horizon.
That horizon, that unknown domain, appears not just in the distance. The horizon
is also within us, scattered throughout our bodies, lives and histories. What is
more unknown than our own psyche?
Manuele Infante explores multi-dimensional horizons together with Diego Noguera,
