For its first creation, the company La Drache is celebrating pagan rites, folklore and the power of costumed bodies as they seek each other out, meet and transform. Drawing on the Dunkirk carnival and queer imagination, the eight dancers explore the subversive role of the popular festival while asking themselves: How can we imagine a new carnival together? How can we redefine its contours and engage in carnivals today? Indeed, while carnivals have a wide-ranging human, social, spiritual and artistic impact on many people, and while they offer a space for freedom and precious irreverence, they also have a dark side.

In response to the racist and sexist excesses of carnivals, Beste cantate takes us on a journey of physical and collective jubilation, reinventing the farandoles, rigaudons and other dances of carnival to reclaim the positive force of this historical and cultural heritage.

Avec ses danseur·euses, la chorégraphe Juliette Chevalier plonge le public dans une fête des corps, des sons et des couleurs.

Pour sa première création, la compagnie La Drache célèbre les rites païens, le folklore, le pouvoir des corps costumés qui se cherchent, se rencontrent, se transforment. À partir du carnaval de Dunkerque et de l’imaginaire queer, les huit danseur·ses explorent le rôle subversif de la fête populaire et s’interrogent : comment imaginer ensemble un nouveau carnaval ? Comment en redessiner les contours et « faire carnaval » aujourd’hui ? Car si le carnaval touche de manière humaine, sociale, spirituelle et artistique le plus grand nombre, s’il offre un espace de liberté et d’irrévérence précieuse, il a aussi ses parts d’ombre.

En réponse à ces dérives racistes et sexistes, Beste Cantate nous entraîne dans une liesse physique et collective, réinvente les farandoles, les cercles, la bande, les rigodons (chahuts) du carnaval et se réapproprie la force positive de cet héritage historique et culturel.

Voor haar eerste creatie viert La Drache heidense riten, folklore en de kracht van gekostumeerde lichamen die elkaar opzoeken, ontmoeten en transformeren. Uitgaande van het carnaval van Duinkerken en queer verbeelding onderzoeken de acht dansers*essen de subversieve rol van het volksfeest en stellen ze zichzelf de vraag: hoe kunnen we ons samen een nieuw soort carnaval inbeelden? Hoe kunnen we de contouren ervan herdefiniëren en vandaag ‘carnaval vieren’? Hoewel carnaval een menselijke, sociale, spirituele en artistieke impact heeft op zoveel mensen als maar mogelijk is, en hoewel het een kostbare ruimte biedt voor vrijheid en oneerbiedigheid, heeft het ook zijn duistere kant.

Als antwoord op de racistische en seksistische uitwassen neemt Beste cantate ons mee op een reis van fysieke en collectieve vreugde, waarbij de farandoles, kringen, bands en rigaudon (paardenspelen) van carnaval opnieuw worden uitgevonden en de positieve kracht van dit historische en culturele erfgoed wordt teruggewonnen.
