Jan De Winter (1936-2020)
Painter, draughtsman, graphic artist, cartoonist, set and costume designer
Jan De Winter, who always loved to draw, begins an apprenticeship with a woodcarver in 1949, at the age of 13.
A year later, he enrolls at the academy in Mechelen. His training is interrupted by his army service and is not resumed until 1963, after his marriage.
He then continues his training at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
In 1968 he is awarded the Young Flemish Painter Prize, in 1972 the important Koopal Prize and in 1973 the Provincial Prize for Plastic Arts of the Province of Antwerp.
For several years he works as a teacher of drawing, colour and composition in Molenbeek.
As an artist, he stands for freedom and social criticism. He is the figurehead of the provo movement in Mechelen and, inspired by what was happening in Amsterdam, using his brush to fight against the petty bourgeoisie, authority and power.
His works, often large formats in which initially the umbilical cord appears frequently and prominently, are characterised by the presence of numerous often chubby personnages. Sex and eroticism also play an important role.
In his later works, there is only room for one or two figures. The formats are smaller.
Jan De Winter is also a successful cartoonist who has won prizes at the Knokke, Kruishoutem and Tongeren festivals,...

Jan De Winter (1936-2020)

Emilie Danchin conveys questions in her work pertaining to the realism of
photography by involving the body in the pho- tographic space. It is very
vibrant as well as an organic ad- venture. Emilie Danchin does not photograph
reality as such, but a kind of dream rooted in the subject, to a certain extent
a somewhat inhabited or animated dreamy reality. To this effect, the
photographic act extends to a personal phenome- nology and the progressive
creation of a visual language ca- pable of relaying a personal experience
charged with images and emotions that, universally recognisable, are likely to
stir viewers’ feelings, disrupt thought and trigger dreams.
Emilie Danchin introduces here Le Bois des Rêves, the culmi- nation of a
performance and photographic work achieved in a property that is noteworthy in
terms of its architecture, as well as its gardens, in the Arts-and-Crafts style.
This heritage site lent itself to her proposal to have the freedom to take over
a space and a body, hers in this case. She tackles the question of origins in a
foreign place in a paradoxical way. It substitutes a space that no longer
exists, which represents her origins.
This property conjured up, through a combination of me- mories, her own English
place of birth, the houses belonging to her grandmothers, their gardens in the
countryside and seaside, baths, woodworks, smells, clothes, furniture, musica-
lity... a whole atmosphere that is generally, culturally familiar to her. And at
the same time, it recalled absence, missing people, invasion and emptiness of
the body and a house that until recently remained within the same family, loss
and the parentage that was interrupted.
By means of self-portrait, Emilie Danchin wondered what the inside of the house
would look like. How would the emotions generated by the exterior of the house
be conveyed in her outside landscapes? How would she extri- cate her body from
the matter to render it in a landscape having similar characteristics? How would
time intervene in this memory-enhanced place where her own body, her robe and
some of her clothes combined with those that belonged to three generations of
women, the house, gar- den, the photographic act itself have jointly become the
template for a vital identity-related fiction? Her aim was to found her hope of
investing a space, materialising and filling a form of absence, the place of the
origins, a kind of double of another imaginary space, distant and close,
inaccessible, erased, deleted, having left the body and the house and
nevertheless, inalienable yet.
Le Bois des Rêves is carried by the the artist’s body postures, which has become
a sensitive measure of the evocative potential of the place. Equally, the place
has given live to non-material memories, the vague outlines of which could not
have stood out without this inseparable staging of her body and the space. The
photographic medium is presented in a variety of aspects, black and white,
colour, varying formats and scales, as well as dialogue between fiction and
observation. Video is added to this. Processed as stills, this lends the
ensemble a form of heartbeat in real time as such of perception through gaze.
This results in
an art form in several phases, the assembly of which in its entirety impresses a
circular motion in space and physically creates time. Intimating the desire to
go on reconnais- sance, this photographic form espouses the volatility of space
and time, emotions, dreams and the sense of self. One marvels before the
representation of the memory space, whose autobiographical form is that of an
absolute memory and of a dream.

Repetition / Erosion is a contemporary approach to the Cantigas de Santa Maria,
a 13th century Galician song collection, through the lens of Erosion. Cantigas
de Santa Maria is one of the largest song collections from the Middle-Ages,
with a total of 427 songs. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the collection
alternates poems narrating stories of miracles and praising Hymns. The overall
work, written in vernacular language (Galaico-Portugues) is oscillating between
courtly love tellings and liturgy. Besides its literary and musical legacy,
this work can also be read as a chronicle of both cultural and mystical life in
Europe during the 13th century and reveals the blurred line between sacred and
folklore. The project plays with different scales of time: geological,
historical, musical and human. In constant evolution, the performance consist of

In her second solo exhibition at the Michèle Schoonjans Gallery, Amélie Scotta
presents a series of works exploring the notions of habitat and landscape
through colour and organic materials, brought to life through both drawing
(wood, bark, rock, etc.) and paper (mineral, vegetable, etc.).
In the Withdraw series, the artist works in two stages, superimposing two layers
of drawing and two types of perspective. The first layer, applied quickly and
randomly across the entire surface of the paper in coloured ink, can evoke the
atmospheric dimension of a landscape. The bright, unnatural colours and the
invisibility of the gesture give the impression of a luminous, radiant surface.
Here and there, accidents of material accentuate the effect of a printed image
that has been doctored, washed out and deteriorated. The second layer, drawn in
graphite, somehow constrains, obstructs or limits these infinite expanses.
Created slowly and meticulously in pencil, the motifs of trellis, wire netting
and other barriers reflect the artist's preoccupation with the question of
confinement. The idea of withdrawal, whether voluntary or not, has already been
evoked in earlier works, notably the Reclusoirs, sculptures inspired by the
small enclosed buildings in which penitents lived in the Middle Ages. But the
contrast between the immateriality of the coloured surface and the repetitive
pattern of the drawing also speaks to us of what is said beyond the edge of the
paper.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Nantes in 1983, Amélie Scotta is a visual artist and teacher based in
Brussels. She holds degrees in Design (HEAR Strasbourg, 2008) and Visual Arts
(ENSAV La Cambre, Brussels, 2016).
Since 2013, her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in Belgium (Le
Botanique, La Médiatine, Vanderborght Building, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts,
European Parliament, etc.) and abroad (Villa Méditerranée in Marseille, Arabic
Culture House in Berlin, Matadero in Madrid, as well as Magasins Généraux,
Palais de Tokyo and Carreau du Temple in Paris). She has also held residencies
at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris,
the Moonens Foundation and the Boghossian Foundation in Brussels. She is the
winner of the Prix international de la Ville de Tournai in 2021, the Prix Cocof
and the Prix Carré sur Seine in 2020.
From the Jeddah Tower to the disused factories of Roubaix, from the Rio stadium
to the Versailles of the people, from medieval recluses to the scaffolding of
Brussels, it is in an intuitive way that the artist questions architecture in
all its forms. Approached primarily through drawing, but also through sculpture
and photography, construction allows her to speak of the human being, the one
who both inhabits and builds.
In more recent works, Amélie Scotta takes a more sensorial approach to landscape
and habitat, working with colour and materials. She addresses the issue of
withdrawal, a position in relation to the world that can provide protection,
confinement or liberation. Her relationship with urban planning is also leading
her increasingly towards projects in the public space.

Brussel.
Visuele Kunsten (ENSAV La Cambre, Brussel, 2016).
in Marseille, Arabic Culture House in Berlijn, Matadero in Madrid, evenals in
Magasins Généraux, Palais de Tokyo en Carreau du Temple in Parijs). Ze heeft ook
residenties gehad in het Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, de Cité Internationale des
Arts in Parijs, de Moonens Stichting en de Boghossian Stichting in Brussel. Ze
