L'Italie, Terre promise des compositeurs

Depuis la fin de la Renaissance, nombreux furent les musiciens à avoir effectué de fréquents séjours sur les terres de Dante. Qu'ils y allèrent pour obtenir une formation musicale de qualité, s'imprégner d'une culture en pleine effervescence, éprouver leurs partitions auprès d'un public exigeant ou pour tisser un réseau professionnel, le voyage en Italie semblait un passage obligé au compositeur qui voulait développer sa carrière européenne. Dans cette conférence, nous explorerons les conditions politiques, culturelles et économiques qui rendirent la péninsule italienne à ce point attrayante, notamment aux maîtres du XVIIIe siècle tels que Haendel et Mozart, compositeurs phares de cette 8e édition du festival.

Charles-Henry Boland a étudié la musicologie et la philosophie à l'ULB. Depuis 2016, il travaille au sein de la maison de production Outhere Music, spécialisée en musique classique et contemporaine. Il donne également au Conservatoire de Bruxelles un cours d'audition commentée et réalise régulièrement des séances introductives pour La Monnaie. Il s'engage également auprès des compagnies théâtrales en qualité de coach vocal et arrangeur musical.

Vanaf het einde van de Renaissance maakten veel muzikanten regelmatig een uitstapje naar het thuisland van Dante. Of ze er nu heen gingen om een muzikale opleiding van hoge kwaliteit te krijgen, om zich onder te dompelen in een bruisende cultuur, om hun partituren te testen op een veeleisend publiek of om een professioneel netwerk op te bouwen, een reis naar Italië leek een essentiële zet voor componisten die hun Europese carrière wilden ontwikkelen. In deze lezing verkennen we de politieke, culturele en economische omstandigheden die het Italiaanse schiereiland zo'n aantrekkelijke bestemming maakten, niet in het minst voor meesterlijke 18e-eeuwse componisten als Händel en Mozart.

Charles-Henry Boland studeerde musicologie en filosofie aan de ULB. Sinds 2016 werkt hij bij het productiebedrijf Outhere Music, gespecialiseerd in klassieke en hedendaagse muziek. Hij doceert ook een cursus muziekbeschouwing en -analyse aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel en geeft regelmatig inleidingen voor de Munt. Hij werkt ook met theatergezelschappen als zangcoach en muziekarrangeur.

From the end of the Renaissance onwards, countless musicians journeyed to Dante's homeland. Whether they were travelling there to get a better musical education, to immerse themselves in a more vibrant culture, to test their scores on a more critical audience or to build a wider professional network, a trip to Italy was considered to be essential for composers aspiring to a European career. This lecture examines the political, cultural and economic conditions that made the Italian peninsula such an attractive destination, not least for aspiring 18th century composers such as Handel and Mozart.

Charles-Henry Boland studied musicology and philosophy at ULB. Since 2016, he has worked at the production company Outhere Music, specialising in classical and contemporary music. He also teaches a music appreciation and analysis course at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and gives regular Introductory talks for La Monnaie. He works also with theatre companies as a vocal coach and music arranger.
