Born in Thessaloniki, Kyriakos Kalaitzidis is not only a master oud player, but
he also knows Mediterranean music like no one else. With his ensemble En
Chordais, he brings together different musical traditions from Greece and its
surrounding regions and mixes East and West. With an instrumental combination
that includes oud, qanûn, piano and percussion, and, of course, vocals, the
ensemble mines eight centuries of music in a sublime and surprising way.
Kalaitzidis and his musicians descend on Bozar with a programme on exile. This
theme is close to Kalaitzidis' heart, as he himself was born into a family of
exiles. Let yourself be carried away by the richness of the timbres and the
exceptional musical feeling with which Kalaitzidis and En Chordais make this
universal theme audible. And let's not forget a special guest, singer and
activist María Farantoúri, renowned for her interpretations of Míkis Theodorákis
songs, who will help make this an unforgettable evening.

universele thema hoorbaar maken.

The story begins in Kidal, capital of Mali’s eighth administrative region. Tea
simmered on the fire while Pino, Cheikh and Mossa talked. They decided to form a
band with just two old “home-made” guitars. A few years later, the band
Tamikrest was performing in Australia and the United States. Tamikrest
(“connection” in Tamasheq) brings together five musicians from Mali, Niger,
Algeria and France. The band sings about the hopes of a free world, to music
enriched by modern rock influences. Tamikrest seeks to share Tuareg poetry and
culture beyond the vast Sahara Desert. With its hypnotic grooves, poetic lyrics
and electrifying concerts, the band naturally establishes itself as a force to
be reckoned with on the global music scene.

FUR is a risk-taker, because that’s how life is, nothing is stable. And to stay
alive, you have to bounce back, from one situation to another, from a ballad to
an oppressive ostinato, from a drone to a wandering melody. Together they
compose a musical hide, with the help of a wild beast that scratches, protects,
and stalks with its noise-ist see-saw.
It’s jazz. But pop can be heard too, in the abundance of simple melodies that
set the tone for the harmony. all. Sometimes noise breaks the line to plunge us
into timbre. Emotion glides along sensation. The abstract intertwines with
melodic riffs. Dialogues in counterpoint, collages of opposing energies that
glide in suspended moments through arpeggios skimmed by the nimble fingers of
the guitarist, while the clarinet weeps and lets us hear the humid sound of its
mucous membranes. The drum kit overturns the groove to the extent that it
scrambles and annihilates fixed pulsation. Space reigns, revealing a dark, silky
night.
********** Nederlands **********
FUR is speels, want zo zit het leven nu eenmaal in elkaar: niks is stabiel. Wie

Tsengel, the western most village of Mongolia. In the remote foothills of the
upper Altai mountains, Batsükh Dorj perpetuates khöömei in his community. This
remarkable musician perfectly masters the different throat singing styles
typical of the Tuvans: khöömei (contracted throat singing), sygyt (whistled
throat singing), kargyraa (deep throat singing), ezenggileer (lit. “stirrups”),
and borbangnadyr (lit. “rolling”). Accompanied by Johanni Curtet, specialist in
throat-singing in the West who arranged and produced her first album, Batsükh
sings us about his nomadic culture through mountains and travels, notably by
imitating the rhythms of horses and the flow of water. A rare and complete
artist: luthier, he masters his own sound; and composer he brings a major
contribution to his musical tradition.
This Altai blues is a sound that is its, and that of this encounter between a
Tuvan musician and a French researcher-musician in search of harmonic sounds,
where the art of khöömei unites them. Seeking a folk acoustic sound in vast
spaces, it is a free and spontaneous interpretation. Compositions in the codes
of the tradition, revisited Tuvan traditional music, a fiddle that makes us
forget the temporality, a lute that punctuates our cavalcades, the overtones
that connect us to the elements, a timeless music, in tribute to our ancestors.
– Batsukh Dorj : throat singing, igil fiddle, doshpuluur lute, shuur flute,
khomus mouth harp, attinduyou horse hooves, khai nose whistle
– Johanni Curtet: throat singing, guitar, doshpuluur lute, dan moi mouth harp.

kargyraa (chant diphonique profond), ezenggileer (lit. « étriers »), et
borbangnadyr (lit. « roulant »).

With this concert already performed over a hundred times in front of audience’s
ecstatic or moved to tears, in Paris, Montreal, New York, Stockholm, Beirut,

Accompanied by four exceptional musicians, he gives body and soul to capture the
frenzied rhythm of La Valse à Mille temps, energetically and elegantly recreates
