No one flees for fun. Ali is 12 years old when he leaves Somalia. He travels the
dangerous road from the Horn of Africa to the heart of Europe. Along the way,
friendships are made despite the hardships and hope is found amidst the horror.
Ali has to cross several countries, a desert and the Mediterranean along with
hundreds of migrants seeking a better future. He arrives at the Brussels South
railway station in 2019, alone, without knowing a word of French or Dutch. He is
14 years old …
This incredible epic is the true story of Ali Abdi Omar, adapted for the opera
in collaboration with Ali himself. This moving creation reconstructs all the
stages of his journey. A sensory experience where electronic music, voice,
string and wind instruments, percussion and dance pay a vibrant tribute to the
resilience of a young boy forced, like so many others, to leave his family and
home in order to survive.

survivre.

Nothing is what it seems at the old English country house Bly. When a new
governess takes up her position, she is told never to leave the children alone!
The shocking confrontation with the ghosts of her predecessor and a certain
Peter Quint soon makes it clear to her why. As protecting the children becomes
increasingly difficult, disturbing questions arise: What horrible acts took
place before her arrival? How innocent are the children? And are you really
seeing what’s before your eyes?
Drawing on Henry James’s intriguing ghost story, Benjamin Britten composed a
psychological thriller in chamber opera format with The Turn of the Screw.
Director Andrea Breth keeps the mystery intact, turning House Bly into a
labyrinth in which the characters are not the only ones to lose themselves.
Together with conductor Antonio Méndez, she will turn the screw on your
imagination as far as it goes…
Are you under 30? Then attend this opera on the Young Opera Night (10.5.2024)
and enjoy a free reception and exclusive after-event.

composé, avec The Turn of the Screw, un thriller psychologique sous forme

artistiek directeur Emmanuel Trenque.

Hardly any emotion is as intense and immediate as that provoked by a chorus in
unison. Whether sacred or secular, choral singing is a musical genre in its own
right with a particularly rich history. From time immemorial, it has enabled
composers to highlight the beauty of the human voice in countless combinations.
The La Monnaie Choruses, their conductor and artistic director Emmanuel Trenque,
and the soloists of the MM Academy will present the French side of this
repertoire in the neo-Gothic setting of the Dominican Church.
Gabriel Fauré’s choral music is famous for its purity, freshness and gentle
melodies. Francis Poulenc, by contrast, entrusted to the chorus the expression
of his own faith, especially towards the end of his life, in works that are now
exuberant and joyful, now serene and mystical, but always sincere. By bringing
together these two masters of song, this concert will give you an experience
that is as sensory as it is spiritual.

In death you will find fulfilment, in your neighbour perhaps the truth behind
love. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs
– posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century
– sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.
In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering,
Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von
Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy
lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us:
what if death brings peace?
The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and
charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good
friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and
‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet
of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this
season.
After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others,
soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage.
Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled
evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of
song.

« Tell
me the Truth About Love », « Funeral Blues », « Johnny » et « Calypso », toutes

Benjamin Brittens vooroorlogse Cabaret Songs. ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’,

Johann Kalliwoda and Felix Mendelssohn soared to great heights as composers
during the 19th century. Each, in their unique way, bridged the gap from pure
classicism to the burgeoning ideals of romanticism, and they were both masters
of a refined musical style.
Today, Kalliwoda's name may have faded somewhat when compared to Mendelssohn's,
yet his music, too, harmoniously combines the principles of classical balance
with the energy of Romanticism. His first symphony features an opening movement
brimming with intensity, a captivating menuetto, and a robust finale dominated
by vigorous counterpoint.
If anything, an even spicier opening was what Mendelssohn, barely 15 years old,
wrote for his first symphony. It was not merely an exercise; young Felix had
already composed around 13 symphonies for a string orchestra. But only now was
he ready to introduce wind instruments and measure himself against the old
masters. Their influence is evident - you can taste a touch of Mozart in the
style and structure, the foundation of Bach's counterpoint, as well as more
contemporary elements from Weber and Beethoven. Mendelssohn was an eager and
fertile ground for all those influences, and here showed his genial poise and
discipline of lifelong classicist.
