Giuseppe Verdi, la voix du peuple italien, est célèbre pour ses scènes massives et ses mélodies entrées dans le patrimoine national. Ce n'est pas exactement là que l’on s’attend à trouver un requiem. Pourtant, en 1873, Verdi signe une messe funèbre qui ne peut être que la sienne. À l'origine, Verdi voulait écrire une œuvre grandiose à la mémoire de Rossini avec treize compatriotes, mais l'idée est restée lettre morte. Il a finalement écrit seul la Messa da Requièm pour un orchestre de 100 musiciens et 120 chanteurs, après la mort de l'écrivain italien Alessandro Manzoni. Avec ses contrastes rythmiques surprenants, son impact dramatique et ses mélodies irrésistibles, le requiem est considéré à juste titre comme un « opéra déguisé en œuvre ecclésiastique ».

Giuseppe Verdi, de tolk van het Italiaanse volk, staat bekend om zijn massascènes en melodieën die het schopten tot nationaal erfgoed. Niet bepaald wat je zou verwachten in een requiem. Toch schreef Verdi in 1873 een begrafenismis die enkel van zijn hand kan zijn. Oorspronkelijk wou Verdi samen met dertien landgenoten een groots werk schrijven ter nagedachtenis van Rossini, maar dit idee stierf een stille dood. Uiteindelijk schreef hij op zijn eentje het Messa da Requièm, voor 100-koppig orkest en 120 zangers, na de dood van de Italiaanse schrijver Alessandro Manzoni. Door de verrassende ritmische contrasten, dramatische impact en meeslepende melodieën wordt het requiem terecht beschouwd als een “opera vermomd als een kerkelijk werk”.

Giuseppe Verdi, the voice of the Italian people, is famous for his crowd scenes and melodies that became national heritage. That might not be what you expect from a requiem. And yet Verdi wrote a funeral mass in 1873 that bears his unmistakeable signature. Initially, Verdi and thirteen of his compatriots wanted to write a grand work in memory of Rossini, but this idea petered out. Ultimately, he penned the Messa da Requièm on his own, for an orchestra of 100 musicians and 120 singers, following the death of the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni. Its surprising rhythmic contrasts, dramatic impact and infectious melodies give the requiem its deserved reputation as an ‘opera disguised as a religious piece’.
