[Prim] Geometric Primitive
Description
The Geometric Abstraction art movement is a significant and influential genre that emerged in the early 20th century, characterized by the use of geometric shapes, lines, and forms to create non-representational artworks. Rejecting the representational nature of traditional art, artists embraced abstraction as a means to explore pure visual elements and convey emotions through simple form and color. The movement sought to distill reality to its fundamental essence, with artists often employing symmetry, precision, and mathematical principles to achieve visual harmony. Geometric Abstraction has left a lasting impact, inspiring artists to experiment with new visual languages and paving the way for future abstract movements. Carlos Caballero, an artist from Cuba, employs Geometric Primitive to express the inherent connections between nature and geometry, intertwining the organic and the mathematical in his thought-provoking pieces. Alberto Casari, hailing from Peru, presents a harmonious blend of colors and shapes, delving into the essence of perception and its relationship with geometric forms, drawing inspiration from textile and his native Peru. Magdalena Fernandez, a well-acclaimed artist from Venezuela, skillfully explores the interplay of nature, light and movement, evoking a sense of fluidity and transformation within her abstract geometry works. Jose Luis Martinat, also from Peru, pushes the boundaries of the medium, incorporating technology and interactive elements into his artworks, creating politically engaged and immersive experiences for viewers. Representing Mexico, young Paula Cortazar brings a distinct cultural perspective to the exhibition, weaving together traditional elements with geometric abstraction, showcasing the rich heritage of Latin America within the context of contemporary art and Nature. “Geometric Primitive” [Prim] promises to be a visual feast, featuring an extensive collection of textiles, sculptures, and multimedia installations, paper works and video, with each artist presenting their unique interpretation of the theme. [Prim] will take place at our Sablon space in Brussels, and will open to the public on 12th January 2024 and will run through 16th March.

60 original works by Belgian collage artist Émelyne Duval will be put into
perspective with objects from the museum’s collection.
“Va te faire Maître” invites us on a whimsical journey in the world of
contemporary art, at the heart of a didactic museum. Trough the realm of collage
art, Émelyne Duval masterfully reinterprets and recontextualises pre-existing
images, breathing new life and meaning into them. Delve into this unique and
captivating artistic exploration that seamlessly blends the past with the
present.
Each piece is meticulously crafted from a mosaic of ancient pictures and
timeworn papers, each laden with its own captivating story.

"The Day the Sky Hung Low", Ella Littwitz’s second solo exhibition at Harlan
Levey Projects, revisits the deserted geography around the Dead Sea, which has
inspired her practice for nearly a decade. It is in this inhospitable setting
that she finds extreme geography, geologic forces, and characteristics in the
shifting landscape that inform her work as they lead her to reflections on the
political, social, historical and cultural realities in the region.
The centerpiece of the exhibition, a new video titled "Ontology of the Void",
ponders the way millennia-long terrestrial processes are echoed in politics,
addressing a geological timescale as a means to think about the intractable
conflicts of the present. This metaphor is narrated as the viewer watches
accumulating piles of potash, a material that has been extracted from the waters
of the Dead Sea, while an ROV deposits an ingot of magnesium in the sea-bed.
This metal ingot, made of minerals extracted from that same location, in being
returned to the original source will soon dissolve again. Underlying this
extractive frenzy, the Dead Sea itself is rapidly disappearing. The name of this
terminal lake, which was once a metaphor for the impossibility of life to exist
in such salinity, is rapidly becoming prophetic.
The image of the artist rappelling down an 80-meter deep chimney-like cave in
Mount Sodom was filmed with a 360-degree video camera, which gives the
impression that she is floating in a time-and-space warp. As she descends, the
narrator tells the tale (and possible geological future) of the biblical
mountain of Sodom, “a symbol of society that sinned and was destined for
destruction.” We learn that as the mountain grows throughout the ages, the
future erosion will release Lot’s wife (an existing, almost abstract rock
formation on the banks of the Dead Sea) from her eternal punishment.
Apocryphally called Edith, Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt as
punishment for looking back to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis
19). The two mirrored images that comprise the work "Edith" are made out of 3D
scans of the actual salt pillar facing itself. One of the images is looking
“backwards” The other, by looking the opposite way, must be looking “forwards”.
One looks to a past of destruction, the other then looks at an uncertain future,
but it remains to the viewers to decide which way each is looking – and what
exactly would be the difference between the past and the future, between what
one "Edith" and the other are contemplating.
All other works in the exhibition present geological features that are also a
metaphor to subjective sentiments and experiences. "Longing" is the bronze cast
of a crack in the ground. The exact origin of the crack is irrelevant, as the
title clearly reflects an emotional and social state of “cracking” rather than a
geological one. Likewise, the work "Tears" presents three sculptural crystals
that were taken from the bed of the Dead Sea. These are columns of salt that
grow invisibly until they reach the water surface and the sun. When they are
uprooted, and displaced, the salt that forms them starts slowly crying. These
“tears”, when dripped onto the bronze base, will trigger another eternal process
of oxidation, with the salt column itself ultimately disappearing.
The most personal works in the exhibition are perhaps a series of photographs
titled "The Day the Sky Hung Low". Through a complex process, Littwitz used a
photographic camera sensitive only to light outside of the visible spectrum. In
this way, the photographs of the sky record the unseen radiation. These images
were produced in relation to a disease the artist contracted from exposure to
radiation while undergoing radiation treatments that helped her body heal. The
title recalls the sense of the sky falling on one’s head when confronted by
life-threatening circumstances. The sky, of course, never actually falls at all.
There is a dissonance between physical and emotional realities, disappointment
when one doesn’t change with the other. Under each unique print is a time stamp.
A bit like a doomsday clock, the numbers show the hours and minutes counting
down to midnight, the end of the day the image was taken.
All the works presented relate to movement and dynamism: elements that grow up
from the sea bed, cracks that emerge, descending into darkness, staring up to
the sky. With varying degrees of futility, all search for the invisible and
ungraspable processes that take place inside the tiny microcosms of cells in our
bodies, as well as in millennial geological processes. When unchecked and
unseen, all of these long processes will end in a catastrophic collapse.

Declarations is an ongoing artistic research project that looks into the poetic
materiality of the CSS web-language. The project is initiated by graphic
designer Doriane Timmermans, a member of the collective Open Source Publishing.
CSS tells a browser, screen, phone, smartwatch - and devices from the past or
yet to be imagined - how text flows, spaces are divided, hyperlinks are clicked,
menus unfolded, and notification bubbled. It takes care of colors, mouvement,
scrolling, animations and responsiveness. Every lines of the CSS language is
called a ’declaration’.
Doriane invited a group of artists, writers, amateurs, designers and hackers to
came together for a week to inspect a shift in design practices emerging from
the nature of the web: as it is made of text, designing become writing. Makers
of the web are becoming both authors and architects, and websites become a work
of articulations. Questions are asked such as who decide of the words we use to
shape the web, and what does they induce on our uses of technology, in terms of
power and accessibility.
The group researched how the malleability of language is used to dialogue with a
multitude of unknown canvases; how, similarly to the choice of words we decide
to use to tell a story, designing with declarations, speak about our intentions,
and encodes narrations into the things we make.
The results of this worksession, the first of this research, are presented as an
installation in Constant’s window.

Given the tremendous challenge facing us—namely preserving the habitability of
the earth for future generations, how do creators, artists and designers, engage
in thinking and practices that reinvent our ways of existing in today’s world?
Co-curated by Nathalie Guiot and Yann Chateigné Tytelman, the exhibition brings
together 37 artists and designers to explore new narratives of transition and
new ways of conceiving and producing in the face of depleting planetary
resources.
In dialogue with works from its collection, the Fondation opens itself to being
an experimental and prospective system at the crossroads of art, design and
ecology. Each exhibition space of the house–both intimate and conducive to long
timelines and events–is organised around a specific theme. It approaches art and
design as means of making living matter visible as a field of innovation, and to
perpetuate the beauty of knowledge and traditions, the depth of gestures and
techniques, in the era of technological hyperconnectivity.

Samantha McEwen arrive à New York à l’âge de 18 ans.
in the East Village, New York, 1978-1983'.

GLUON presents Checkin’ Each Other Out, an artistic project by Belgian artist
Jerry Galle. The show is the first exhibition in a series showcasing the results
of Gluon’s residency collaboration and focuses on Galle’s most recent work,
developed during a residency at Belgian research centre Flanders Make, hosted by

Checkin’ Each Other Out is a project that questions our understanding of
`intelligence’. Through interaction between humans, robots and living organisms,
Galle aims to explore alternative forms of intelligence to suggest a broader
spectrum of `smart’. Artificial intelligence (AI) constitutes one of these
emerging intelligences. At the same time, there is also growing recognition of
non-human intelligences in other living organisms such as octopuses and
mycelium, which exhibit unique forms of ‘intelligence’. To encourage a shift in
perspective, Galle suggests to embrace new approaches that recognise the
complexity of intelligence in all its forms. According to Galle, it is crucial
to consider robots and artificial intelligence not merely as subordinate
entities, but as autonomous subjects. Should we emphasize fostering
collaboration and promoting a sense of shared agency and mutual commitment? It
is essential to ask questions that explore subjective experiences; such as “What
is it like to be you?” rather than sticking to the comparative, binary question
“Are you like us?”. The installation by Belgian artist Jerry Galle, features a
collaborative robot (cobot), glass sculptures and an AI-ecosystem, embodies the
uncertain interplay among all living organisms and technology.

Checkin’ Each Other Out est un projet artistique qui interroge notre

Checkin’ Each Other Out is een artistiek project dat ons
