A solo figure stands at the edge of the proscenium stage – the place often used
for speeches and stand-up comedy – and silently morphs from one pose to the
next, like a body shaped by time. Iconic and mundane images emerge in a
dramaturgy that exposes a nuanced embodiment of what it means to sustain a
place, a pose, a representation. Maria Hassabi merges the strength and
vulnerability one experiences on stage – to be uncovered. She frames her
signature style of stillness, slowness and aesthetic precision, and invites her
audience to awaken their own references to a parade of images as they unfold.
What happens when the process of an image is revealed? In a contemporary culture
fiercely flooded by images, does it lose its appeal when compared to our
expectations? Hassabi has presented her work in the world’s leading museums and
exhibition contexts, and at the festival in 2014 and 2017. On Stage is
undoubtedly one of her most radical and personal works, offering a feminist
reflection and a piercing insight into her artistic trajectory. Before an
audience, Maria Hassabi’s intensity is visible, almost tangible, in a work of
rare power that leaves no one indifferent.

On Stage is ongetwijfeld één van haar meest radicale
geeft in haar artistieke traject.

Can a choreography intertwine different movements, like those of a human body
and the flow of goods in a globalised world? Artist Kwame Boafo lives and works
in Accra, Ghana, where he plans to open an institute of movement and philosophy.
Accra is also the port city through which European end-of-life cars enter the
West African market, often after being reconditioned in Brussels. With
Threshold, Boafo creates a beautiful solo using visually refined images and
movements relating to car fragments to unfold a poetic dialogue between
choreography and commercial history. He collaborated with artist Percy Nii
Nortey, known to use found objects and materials from mechanical workshops in
Ghana to tell the stories collected by these end-of-life cars. For this
performance, he created a curtain out of Ghanaian fabrics used to clean the
vehicles that arrive from Brussels. Now, presented in the monumental atrium of
the Arts et Métiers building – located in the canal area from which cars usually
depart – Threshold appears as a visceral composition, dancing in the unexpressed
spaces between our presence, environmental degradation and consumerism. In this
performance, we suddenly feel the human and non-human movements in our global
economy.

eindeloze goederenstroom in onze geglobaliseerde wereld laten versmelten?
opknapbeurt in Brussel.

Thirteen performers dance and sing their hearts out, as if in ecstasy. They move
as one global body through scenes reminiscent of street life, at times evoking a
procession. Periodically, one will escape the dance only to be lovingly reunited
with the group. They sing traditional and contemporary Mozambican songs, gospel
and baroque motifs. Choreographer Idio Chichava found inspiration in the
migratory movements of groups of people and the dance rituals of the Makonde
people living in Mozambique and neighbouring countries. He believes only bodies
that dance and sing simultaneously express themselves fully and exist in synergy
with others. Vagabundus depicts life as a constant coming together and being
together in a group, and migration as a possibly emotional, spiritual and
collective journey. Chichava explores the expressiveness of the body and points
the way to our true selves celebrating life with a pared-down stage design
carried entirely by the explosive impact of dance and voices. This dazzling
dance production invites us to recognise that our identity is strengthened by
the community, through an overwhelming group performance showcasing song and
dance as a means of resistance and a ritual of survival.

How do we feel the impact of events which are so much larger than us, move
through us, and animate and activate our bodies all the time? Ten performers
enact a glacially morphing tableau vivant on a mobile raft-like stage. Their
voices generate a score that crescendos and resonates as they clutch, careen and
cleave in a space too small to contain them, spilling off the edges. The scenes
shown reference at times images from classical iconography. Tenderness and
violence, sensuality and brute force cohabitate. The audience sits all around as
if watching a boxing match, embanking the performers, close enough to smell
their sweat and feel the steam of the spiralling scenes. Celebrated American
choreographer Faye Driscoll returns to the festival with a multi-sensory flesh
and breath sculpture made of bodies, sounds, scents, liquids and objects. She
pushes her performers to their limits in this compelling, adventurous work,
presented in the impressive Horta Hall, originally an exhibition space for
sculptures. Weathering is an ode to the inexhaustible physical power of queer
bodies.

‘Die Kunst der Fuge occupies an almost mythical place in the oeuvre of Johann
Sebastian Bach. Not only on account of its vast scope and impenetrability, but
also because Bach worked on it until his death, which gives the listener the
impression that this is his musical testament.’
— Bernard Foccroulle
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her exploration of Johann Sebastian Bach’s
oeuvre with the work that, in a sense, is the pinnacle of his life’s work: Die
Kunst der Fuge. The remarkable thing about this cycle of eighteen canons and
fugues, performed live by Bernard Foccroulle on the organ of the Cathedral of St
Michael and St Gudula, is the exceptional power of imagination that emanates
from what is ultimately a minimum of musical material: the first theme consists
of only twelve notes, spread over four measures.
The choreography, developed with Radouan Mriziga, starts out from the same
principle by working on four lines and in the intermediate space. In addition,
the choreography is also inspired by the circumstances in which Bach composed
Die Kunst der Fuge. He worked on this cycle until the end of his life, and the
final fugue, composed with the musical notes reflecting the letters of his
surname, was never finished. This incompleteness resonates forcefully with our
current sense of powerlessness as we face a global catastrophe, despite being at
the height of our powers.

“If I nationed myself / in the shadow / of a colossal wave / If only to hold on
/ by opening— / by Kingdom come”. This phrase from the Ocean Vuong poem
Waterline functions as a mantra for the new creation from Clara Furey. The
Canadian artist specialises in existential dance experiments that explore
various states of being. Through physical research into water, the choreographer
brings the immensity of an inner sea to the stage floor. With UNARMOURED, Furey
reunites and reconciles what has previously been separate, the performance
emerging from a fluid, carnal chaos whose crashing waves suggest infinity as a
transformative emotion. The dancers appear as unsettling sculptures, undertaking
an artistic exploration that awakens compelling desires. With a soft-core
approach, always in between, always edging, they claim the right to eroticism on
their terms. In a garden of resonance, bodies vibrate to rhythmic waves of light
and sound, an immersive sound composition created by musician Tomas Furey.
Membranes stretch and boundaries blur. Bodies no longer need to be seen for
their contours but for the energy that overflows them. They release an erotic
power that runs through us and propels us with force, leaving us fundamentally
curious and tantalised.

In hoeverre is
