And are you really seeing what’s before your eyes?  Drawing on Henry James’s intriguing ghost story, Benjamin Britten composed a psychological thriller in chamber opera format with The Turn of the Screw. Director Andrea Breth keeps the mystery intact, turning House Bly into a labyrinth in which the characters are not the only ones to lose themselves. Together with conductor Antonio Méndez, she will turn the screw on your imagination as far as it goes… Are you under 30? ********** English ********** In death you will find fulfilment, in your neighbour perhaps the truth behind love. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs – posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century – sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life.   In 1948, when the rubble of the world conflagration was still smouldering, Strauss set to music three poems by Hermann Hesse and one by Joseph von Eichendorff for his swan song. These are lieder that, with their dreamy lyricism, find comfort in the irrevocable cyclicity of nature and reassure us: what if death brings peace?   The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and ‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet of the composer whose opera The Turn of the Screw we are also performing this season.  After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others, soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on our stage. Accompanied at the piano by Thom Janssen, she will present a richly filled evening full of contrasts that will immerse you completely in the poetry of song. ********** Français ********** C’est dans la mort qu’on trouve la plénitude ; et c’est peut-être chez son voisin qu’on trouvera la vérité de l’amour. Les Vier letzte Lieder de Richard Strauss et les Cabaret Songs de Benjamin Britten – perles posthumes de deux des plus grands compositeurs de mélodies du XXe siècle – chantent, chacune à leur manière, les grandes questions de la vie.   En 1948, alors que fument encore les décombres de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Strauss met en musique, en guise de chant du cygne, trois poèmes de Hermann Hesse et un quatrième de Joseph von Eichendorff. Dans ces lieder au lyrisme plein de rêverie, l’irrévocable cyclicité de la nature est source de réconfort et d’apaisement : et si la mort était la promesse du repos ?     Le post-romantisme mélancolique de Strauss contraste fortement avec le wit and charm des Cabaret Songs de Benjamin Britten, composées avant la guerre. « Tell me the Truth About Love », « Funeral Blues », « Johnny » et « Calypso », toutes écrites sur des poèmes de son proche ami W.H. Auden, offrent, par l’entremise de leurs accents humoristiques et jazzy, une facette du compositeur bien différente de celle que révèle son opéra The Turn of the Screw, que nous présentons également cette saison.  Ce sera le premier récital donné sur la scène de la Monnaie par la soprano Lenneke Ruiten, qu’on a entendue dans des prises de rôles inoubliables pour Les Huguenots, Bastarda et bien d’autres. Accompagnée au piano par Thom Janssen, elle propose une soirée bien remplie et riche en contrastes, une immersion dans la poésie du texte mis en musique. ********** Nederlands ********** In de dood vind je vervulling, bij je buurman misschien de waarheid achter de liefde. Het zijn liederen die met dromerige lyriek troost vinden in de onherroepelijke cycliciteit van de natuur en ons geruststellen: wat als de dood nu eens rust brengt?     Strauss’ melancholieke laat-romantiek staat haaks op de wit and charm van Benjamin Brittens vooroorlogse Cabaret Songs. ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ en ‘Calypso’, allemaal op gedichten van zijn goede vriend W.H. Auden, laten met hun geestige, jazzy ondertoon een heel andere facet horen van de componist van wie we dit seizoen ook de opera The Turn of the Screw brengen. Sopraan Lenneke Ruiten zingt na onvergetelijke passages in onder meer Les Huguenots en Bastarda nu voor het eerst een recital op ons podium. Aan de piano begeleid door Thom Janssen brengt ze een rijkgevulde avond vol contrasten, die u helemaal onderdompelt in de poëzie van het lied.

Begeleiding: Fatiha Boujdaine - Fatyfann.be Na een gegidst bezoek aan de expo Izran N'Arif, maak je zelf een kunstwerk. De Antwerpse kunstenares Fatiha Boujdaine houdt van experiment, ze werkt zelf met verschillende materialen en texturen. Voor deze workshop ga je creatief aan de slag met de ‘Tazarza’, een symbool dat het samenleven van verschillende religies representeert. Mensen gebruikten dit symbool vroeger op vele voorwerpen, op spelden, servies, … Vandaag ga jij aan de slag op hout of glas. Deze activiteit kreeg het label: Nederlands, een kans. Dat wil zeggen dat we voor deze activiteit ook deelnemers uitnodigen die hun Nederlands willen oefenen.

It's an opportunity to take a closer look at our own rituals, journeys, collections, obsessions, traditions and gestures to ward off fate or heal traumas, whether they be individual or collective, conscious or unconscious. Participants can continue their visit with a short break and a free drink at the Estaminet de La Maison des Arts. ********** Français ********** La Maison des Arts is een centrum voor hedendaagse kunst dat is gevestigd in een burgerwoning uit het begin van de 19de eeuw. Het biedt plaats aan tentoonstellingen voor plastische kunst en ontwikkelde een bemiddelingsprogramma dat hedendaagse kunst toegankelijk maakt voor een breed publiek. La Maison des Arts organiseert een tentoonstelling over rituelen. Keer op keer doet ons stilstaan bij onze eigen rituelen, onze gebaren om het noodlot af te wenden of een trauma te boven te komen, onze trajecten, collecties, obsessies en tradities, of die nu individueel of collectief, bewust of onbewust zijn.
