The Dream of Poliphilus is probably too complex and eclectic to be a truly canonical work of literature. But that’s a shame! This detailed story, dating from 1499, describes a dream in which Poliphilus goes in search of his beloved, imagining himself in a utopian world full of ancient architecture, literature and music. Renaissance ideas are already emerging here, but for Paul Van Nevel and the Huelgas Ensemble, they merely bridge the gap between mediaeval tastes and the Romanticism of the 19th century. As in the dream itself, the choice of music blurs space and time, whether in the anonymous, late mediaeval Je suis trestout damour raimpli, the Italian madrigal Solo e pensoso or Max Reger’s Es waren zwei Köningskinder. Love, the force that drives Poliphilus, pervades all the music.

Le Songe de Poliphile est sans doute trop complexe et excentrique pour faire partie des standards de la littérature. À tort ! Ce récit détaillé de 1499 décrit le rêve dans lequel Poliphile part à la recherche de sa bien-aimée et se promène dans un monde utopique gorgé d'architecture ancienne, de littérature et de musique. Les idéaux de la Renaissance y sont déjà présents, mais pour Paul Van Nevel et l'ensemble Huelgas, ils ne sont qu'un pont entre les goûts du Moyen-Âge et le romantisme du XIXe siècle. Comme dans le songe de Poliphile, l’espace et le temps se confondent dans les choix musicaux de ce programme, de l'anonyme Je suis trestout damour raimpli de la fin du Moyen Âge au madrigal italien Solo e pensoso en passant par Es waren zwei Köningskinder de Max Reger. L'amour, moteur de Poliphile, nourrit chacune de ces œuvres.

De droom van Poliphilus is wellicht te complex en ecclectisch om een standaard literatuurwerk te zijn. Ten onrechte! Dit gedetaileerde verhaal uit 1499 beschrijft de droom waarin Poliphilus op zoek gaat naar zijn geliefde en zich door een utopische wereld waant vol antieke architectuur, literatuur en muziek. De renaissance idealen komen hier al naar boven, maar zijn voor Paul Van Nevel en het Huelgas Ensemble slechts een brug tussen de smaak van de middeleeuwen en de 19e-eeuwse romantiek. Net als in de droom vervagen in de muziekkeuzes plaats en tijd, zowel in het anonieme, laat-middeleeuwse Je suis trestout damour raimpli als in het Italiaanse madrigaal Solo e pensoso, tot in Es waren zwei Köningskinder van Max Reger. De liefde, Poliphilus’ drijfveer, is in alle werken aanwezig.
