When Guy, a bank teller, learns that he is a non-player character in a bloodthirsty, open-world video game, he goes on to become the hero of the story and takes the responsibility of saving the world.

Whether you're a gamer or not, the phenomenon of video games can't have escaped you. Popular culture, a place for socialization or a parent's nightmare, video games are still often misunderstood. Arts&Publics, in partnership with Kinograph, invites you to explore and question our relationship with video games and their place in our society through the screening of two films, Free Guy in October and Knit's Island in November. 

Through this project, we hope to gain a better understanding of the role of video games both as cultural objects, capable of moving, telling and creating worlds, and as social objects, fostering communities and human interaction in a virtual space. The project aims to create a space for dialogue, demystifying the medium and highlighting its creative and community potential, while addressing key social and cultural issues.

The screening will be accompanied by contributions from :

Bruno Dupont is a researcher at KULeuven's Mintlab and visiting professor at the VUB. He specializes in the links between video games, literature and new media, as well as gambling practices. His work includes analyzing the representation of computers and video games in contemporary German literature.

Evoluant désormais dans un monde qui ne connaît pas de limites, il va tout mettre en œuvre pour le sauver à sa manière, avant qu’il ne soit trop tard…

Que vous soyez gamer ou non, le phénomène des jeux vidéo n'a pas dû vous échapper. Culture populaire, lieu de socialisation ou cauchemar des parents, le jeu vidéo est encore souvent mal compris. Arts&Publics, en partenariat avec le Kinograph, vous invite à explorer et questionner notre rapport aux jeux vidéo ainsi que leur place dans nos sociétés à travers la projection de deux films, Free Guy en octobre et Knit’s Island en novembre. 

Ainsi, à travers le projet nous souhaitons mieux comprendre la place du jeu vidéo à la fois en tant qu'objet culturel, capable d'émouvoir, de raconter et de créer des univers, mais aussi en tant qu'objet social, favorisant des communautés et des interactions humaines dans un espace virtuel. Le projet veut créer un espace de dialogue pour démystifier ce média, valoriser son potentiel créatif et communautaire, tout en abordant des enjeux sociaux et culturels essentiels.

La projection sera accompagnée par les interventions de :

Bruno Dupont est chercheur au Mintlab de la KULeuven et professeur invité à la VUB. Il se spécialise dans les liens entre jeux vidéo, littérature et nouveaux médias, ainsi que dans les pratiques de gambling. Ses travaux incluent l'analyse de la représentation de l'ordinateur et du jeu vidéo dans la littérature allemande contemporaine.

Guy is een bankmedewerker die elke dag dezelfde routine volgt. Hij wordt wakker, gaat naar zijn werk, overleeft een bankoverval, speelt en verliest altijd een potje softbal en gaat nadien wat met zijn teamgenoten drinken voordat hij naar bed gaat. Morgen zal Guy precies hetzelfde doen. Al verandert er één dingetje: hij vindt een bijzondere bril. Eenmaal opgezet toont deze aan Guy de kaart van de stad waarin hij woont, het geld dat hij op zak heeft en een levensbalk. Jazeker, Guy ontdekt dat hij in een brute, open-world videospel zit.

Of je nu gamer bent of niet, het fenomeen videogames kan je niet zijn ontgaan. Arts&Publics, in samenwerking met Kinograph, nodigt je uit om onze relatie met videogames en hun plaats in onze samenleving te verkennen en in vraag te stellen door de vertoning van twee films, Free Guy in oktober en Knit's Island in november.

Via dit project hopen we een beter inzicht te krijgen in de plaats van videogames als een cultureel object, dat kan bewegen, verhalen kan vertellen en werelden kan creëren, en als een sociaal object, dat gemeenschappen en menselijke interactie bevordert in een virtuele ruimte. Het doel van het project is om een ruimte voor dialoog te creëren om dit medium te demystificeren en het creatieve en gemeenschapspotentieel ervan te promoten, en tegelijkertijd belangrijke sociale en culturele kwesties aan te pakken.

Bruno Dupont is onderzoeker aan het Mintlab van de KULeuven en gastprofessor aan de VUB. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de verbanden tussen videogames, literatuur en nieuwe media, maar ook in gokpraktijken. Hij analyseert onder andere de representatie van computers en videogames in de hedendaagse Duitse literatuur.
