“A house without electricity is a house without joy,” we hear a voice say at the beginning of Tongo Saa (Rising up at Night) when darkness has fallen over Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and its 17 million inhabitants. It is just before Christmas and people are struggling to gain access to electric light and dry feet. Kudi is mobilising the residents of his Kisenso neighbourhood to collect money for a new power cable. Davido is looking for shelter after his home and those of thousands of other people are flooded by the Congo River. Together with other young men, he kills time by working out and dreams of a better future.
Tongo Saa is a sensitive portrait of the residents of Kinshasa as they face the challenges of life in an environment marked by violence and coloured by the uncertainty of tomorrow.
 
Nelson Makengo lives and works in Kinshasa. He is a Congolese director, visual artist and producer whose work oscillates between contemporary art and cinema. His film Nuit debout (Up at night) (Best Short IDFA 2019) has screened at over 100 festivals worldwide and has been nominated by the BFI as one of the 50 best films of 2020. In recent years, Nelson Makengo has collaborated as a director with Aljazeera and Meta, has been a jury member of several festivals and is a Sundance Documentary Film Institute and Doha Film Institute Fellow. Tongo Saa (Rising up at night) is his first feature documentary.

Dans les première minutes de Tongo Saa, une voix résonne alors que la nuit est tombée sur Kinshasa : "une maison sans électricité est une maison sans joie”. Le documentaire de Nelson Makengo dresse un portrait plein d’émotions des habitants de la capitale de la République Démocratique du Congo, confrontés à des défis de la vie quotidienne dans un environnement marqué par la violence et la peur du lendemain. Le film relate l’histoire de plusieurs protagonistes, comme Kudi, qui collecte de l’argent auprès de ses voisins pour acheter un nouveau câble électrique, ou Davido en quête d’un abri après les inondations causées par le fleuve Congo dans la mégapole congolaise. En compagnie d’autres jeunes, il rêve à un avenir meilleur. 
Nelson Makengo, réalisateur, artiste visuel et producteur congolais, vit et travaille à Kinshasa. Son film Nuit debout a été présenté dans une centaine de festivals internationaux.Tonga Saa est son premier long métrage documentaire et a notamment obtenu le Prix spécial du jury décerné par Vision du Réel 2024.

De documentaire van Nelson Makengo schetst een emotioneel portret van de inwoners van de hoofdstad van de Democratische Republiek Congo, die worden geconfronteerd met dagelijkse beproevingen, straatgeweld en angst voor de toekomst. De film vertelt het verhaal van een aantal protagonisten, waaronder Kudi, die geld inzamelt bij zijn buren om een nieuwe elektriciteitskabel te kopen, en Davido, die onderdak zoekt nadat Kinshasa door de Congo-rivier is overstroomd. Samen met andere jongeren droomt hij van een betere toekomst. Is die hoop tevergeefs? 
De Congolese regisseur, beeldend kunstenaar en producent Nelson Makengo woont en werkt in Kinshasa. Zijn film Nuit debout (Best Short IDFA 2019) werd vertoond op een honderdtal internationale festivals. Tonga Saa is zijn eerste lange documentaire en kreeg meteen de juryprijs op Visions du Réel 2024
