Description

LIES WE TELL makes for a deeply involving story of dark family secrets coming up to the surface and an evolving game of wits. Mulcahy’s focused direction is lean, stripping the story back to its essentials and ensuring that each scene has meaning and furthers the narrative. It grips from the opening moments and then gradually accelerates as events take a sinister turn. This is not an airless period piece with an expected wedding at the end. It plays out as a suspenseful drama, driven by Aza Hand’s evocative music and lush cinematography by Eleanor Bowman. There is a careful, refined quality to the filmmaking which bypasses predictability and turns the narrative around to its rightful place without coming across as forced. C'est une occasion unique de découvrir ce long-métrage qui ne sortira pas en salles avant des mois !

Mais pour partir à l’assaut des grands clubs européens, il faut payer. Sa grand-mère se résout à s’endetter pour l’aider à réaliser son rêve. Une fois à Paris, Mitri voit rapidement son rêve se transformer en cauchemar. Il se retrouve abandonné sans un sou en poche et ne peut imaginer affronter la honte du retour au village. Commence alors une période d’errance douloureuse. Mais son rêve de foot le rattrapera au détour de belles rencontres. Projection à l’attention des publics des structures culturelles, sociales, éducatives et d’encadrement des jeunes et moins jeunes : services d’accueil et d’aide à la jeunesse (MJ et AMO), maisons de quartiers, maisons de femmes ou encore centres d’actions interculturelles ou d’insertion socio-professionnelle... L’objectif de l’opération est d’étendre au plus grand nombre de Bruxellois·es une programmation de cinéma qui s’attache à encourager l’éducation citoyenne en proposant une démarche réflexive sur la société - que ce soit à travers des sujets liés à la diversité, l’éducation aux médias, le radicalisme religieux ou politique, la Shoah, l’égalité des sexes, les inégalités socio-économiques ou encore à la colonisation, l’homosexualité, la drogue mais aussi l’engagement, la militance ou la résistance.

Ce soir, Anna verra sa routine brisée par une nouvelle funeste ; ce soir, Nicolas saura pourquoi Anna ne l’a pas tué. La rencontre de Pina avec le chef des bandits plongera le hameau dans une ère de famine, jusqu’à faire basculer le destin du pays tout entier.

This programme hosts films that come out of ongoing liberation struggles. It brings into conversation cinema that is produced from and about the immediate present of Rojava and Palestine. The films in the programme were all produced as part of collectives that have been formed within the scope of revolutionary movements.   Xewn (Dream), by Gule Welat, 2023, 11’23’’ in Kurdish with English subtitles Dreams are the only way for a Kurdish Mother from Kobane to meet her Martyr son during many years…. Gule Welat is a Kurdish musician and filmmaker from Rojava. She worked as a Director Assistant in many productions of Rojava Film Commune like The End will Be Spectacular, Kobane and The Lonely Trees. Now she is a member of Kezî Women Film Collective. Kezî is a collective of women filmmakers from both Kurdish and international backgrounds, based in Rojava, in northeastern Syria. Over the years, their work has encompassed film production, movie screenings, and the training of women interested in cinema in Rojava.   Xewa Mirine (The Sleeping Death), by Zîlan Hemo, 2023, 15’07” in Kurdish with English subtitles A Kurdish YPJ (Women’s defense units) fighter wakes up heavily wounded in a house, all the family members around her are killed. She can hear that the house is surrounded by ISIS. She is out of ammunition. In her pocket there is only one bullet left. How is she going to use her last bullet? Zilan Hemo is a young writer and director from Kobanê. She studied filmmaking at the Academy of Arts Martyr Yekta Herekol.
