Every year, Dorcy Rugamba returns to his family home in Kigali, to the ivy covering the walls, the callas and anthuriums on the terrace, the palm and papaya trees at the entrance, Mount Jali to the north and Mount Kigali to the south. But for years, this journey home was impossible.

This book is at once a love letter to those who are no longer here, a hymn to life, and a piece of ancestor worship. In it, Dorcy Rugamba addresses his father, his mother and those who are no longer here. He gives an account of what he saw and learned by their side, the child and young man he was, and how long it took later for him to accept the unacceptable. He holds the departed close to his heart, honouring their memory and their lives, exploring the world of the past in order to express its beauty and poetry. He asks himself, How do you put into words something that is beyond reach?

A writer and leading figure of the Rwandan cultural scene, Dorcy Rugamba offers us a moving narrative, bolstered by a pen and voice of rare intensity.

These past few years, all my work as an artist has been about fighting the enterprise of annihilation by giving victims a face, a name, a life and a reality, so that they cease to be mere numbers or victims of torture seen only through the prism of the atrocious conditions of their disappearance. Long before that, they were individuals with lives, dreams, plans, families – and it is up to us to breathe new life into them.

An actor, author and director, Dorcy Rugamba is the co-author of a collective work that marked an epoch, Rwanda 94. In 2001 he created the Urwintore collective dedicated to producing Rwandan artists on local and international stages. In 2012 he founded the Rwanda Arts Initiative, an arts centre in Kigali. In March 2020 he created Les Restes suprêmes, a major work acclaimed by critics, and in October 2020 he collaborated with Abderrahmane Sissako and musician Damon Albarn on the staging of the opera Le vol du Boli at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In 2024, together with the Rwanda Arts Initiative, he founded the Kigali Triennial of contemporary art.

Majnun is a charismatic and inspired artist. His name, which means ‘madman’ in Arabic, was a deliberate choice because, for him, madness is a space of freedom in which he can explore the depths of his soul. Originally from Senegal, he grew up in an environment where art was everywhere. It was there that he discovered hip-hop. But his encounter with the guitar marked the start of a journey that would lead him to become a multi-instrumentalist. Over the years, he has endeavoured to develop a resolutely eclectic art in keeping with his nomadic lifestyle. His voice reflects his vivid imagination. It also tells us, with great sincerity and emotion, about the incredible epic that is his life and which he continues to draw on … This time, the artist has chosen to speak to us of his country of origin.

Tous les ans, Dorcy Rugamba revient à Kigali dans la maison de sa famille : il y a toujours du lierre sur les murs, des callas et des langues de feu sur la terrasse, le palmier et le papayer à l’entrée, le Mont Jali au Nord, le Mont Kigali au Sud. Mais pendant des années, ce retour a été impossible.

Dans ce livre, qui est tout à la fois une lettre d’amour pour ceux qui ne sont plus, un hymne à la vie, une part du culte des ancêtres, Dorcy Rugamba s’adresse à son père, à sa mère, à tous les absents. Il dit ce qu’il a vu et appris auprès d’eux, l’enfant et le jeune homme qu’il était, le temps qu’il a fallu après, pour accepter l’inacceptable. Il se tient au plus près des absents, il honore leur mémoire et leur vie, il explore le monde d’avant pour dire sa beauté et sa poésie et s’interroge : Comment traduire en mots ce qui est hors de portée ?

Ecrivain et figure majeure de la scène culturelle rwandaise, Dorcy Rugamba nous offre un récit bouleversant, porté par une écriture, une voix, une intensité rare.

Tout mon travail d’artiste a consisté ces dernières années à combattre l’entreprise d’anéantissement en redonnant un visage, un nom, une vie, une réalité aux victimes pour qu’elles cessent d’être des nombres ou des suppliciés qu’on ne regarde qu’au travers des conditions atroces de leur disparition. Bien avant elles étaient des individus qui avaient des vies, des rêves, des projets, une famille, une existence dont il nous appartient de ranimer la flamme.

Comédien, auteur et metteur en scène, Dorcy Rugamba est co-auteur d’une oeuvre collective qui a fait date Rwanda 94. En 2001, il crée Urwintore collectif destiné à produire les artistes rwandais sur les scènes locales et internationales. En 2012, il fonde Rwanda Arts Initiative, centre d'art à Kigali. Il créé Les Restes suprêmes, une oeuvre majeurs, saluée par la critique. En octobre 2020 au Théâtre du Châtelet à Paris, il collabore avec Abderrahmane Sissako et le musicien Damon Albarn à la mise en scène de l’opéra Le vol du Boli. En 2024 il fonde avec Rwanda Arts Initiative, la Triennale de Kigali des arts contemporains.

Majnun est un artiste charismatique et inspiré. Son nom qui signifie « le fou » en arabe est un choix délibéré. Car la folie, nous dit-il, est son espace de liberté, dans lequel il peut explorer le fond de son âme. Originaire du Sénégal, il a grandi dans un environnement ou l’art était omniprésent. Il fera ainsi ses premiers pas dans le hip-hop. Mais la rencontre avec la guitare fut le vrai point de départ d’une quête, qui l’emmena plus tard, à devenir multi-instrumentiste. Il s’évertue au fil des années à mûrir un art résolument éclectique, en cohérence avec sa condition nomade. Sa voix révèle l’imaginaire riche qui l’habite. Elle nous dit aussi, avec une sincérité et une émotion juste, l’incroyable épopée qu’est cette vie humaine qu’il ne cesse de nous conter… Cette fois, l’artiste a choisi  de nous parler à partir de son pays d’origine.

Elk jaar keert Dorcy Rugamba terug naar zijn ouderlijk huis in Kigali: er is altijd klimop op de muren, callas en vuurtongen op het terras, palmbomen en papaja's aan de ingang, de berg Jali in het noorden, de berg Kigali in het zuiden. Maar jarenlang was deze terugkeer onmogelijk.

In dit boek, dat tegelijk een liefdesbrief is aan hen die niet meer onder ons zijn, een lofzang op het leven en een stukje voorouderverering, richt Dorcy Rugamba zich tot zijn vader, zijn moeder en allen die niet meer onder ons zijn. Hij vertelt wat hij heeft gezien en geleerd van hen, als kind en jongeman, en hoe lang het heeft geduurd voordat hij het onaanvaardbare accepteerde. Hij blijft zo dicht mogelijk bij hen die afwezig zijn, hij eert hun nagedachtenis en hun leven, hij verkent de wereld van vroeger om uitdrukking te geven aan de schoonheid en de poëzie ervan, en hij vraagt zich af: hoe kunnen we onder woorden brengen wat buiten ons bereik ligt?

Dorcy Rugamba, schrijver en belangrijke figuur in de Rwandese culturele scène, biedt ons een diep ontroerend verhaal, gedragen door een schrijfstijl, een stem en een bijzondere intensiteit.

Lang daarvoor waren ze individuen met levens, dromen, plannen, een familie en een bestaan waarvan we de geest opnieuw moeten aanwakkeren.

Want waanzin, zo vertelt hij ons, is zijn ruimte van vrijheid, waarin hij de diepten van zijn ziel kan verkennen. Hij komt oorspronkelijk uit Senegal en groeide op in een omgeving waar kunst alomtegenwoordig was. Zijn eerste stappen zette hij in de hiphop. Maar zijn ontmoeting met de gitaar was het echte startpunt van een zoektocht die hem later zou leiden tot een multi-instrumentalist. In de loop der jaren heeft hij ernaar gestreefd om een resoluut eclectische kunst te ontwikkelen, in overeenstemming met zijn nomadische toestand. Zijn stem onthult de rijke verbeelding die in hem huist. Het vertelt ons ook, met oprechtheid en ware emotie, over het ongelooflijke epos dat het menselijk leven is dat hij ons steeds vertelt... Deze keer heeft de artiest ervoor gekozen om ons toe te spreken vanuit zijn land van herkomst.
