Description

Ciara Nic Chormaic's documentary is a cinematic exploration of the rise of hip-hop and electronic music artists in Ireland who embrace the oral traditions of folklore, ancient poetry and sean-nós singing to create a new fusion sound and indigenous subgenre. An ensemble piece featuring Irish-language rappers Mory and Oisín Mac, producer and multi-instrumentalist Fehdah and Limerick rapper Strange Boy, this beautiful black-and-white film delves deep into these four artists' practice and how they are breaking new ground in Irish music. Through insightful interviews, intimate portrayals of the artists' creative process in the studio and visceral live performances, Ó BHĖAL tells the story of an exciting moment in time in the Irish contemporary musical landscape.

And once he marries in Eritrea and becomes a father, the distance of 6.000kms takes its toll. Against all odds, Biniam climbs up the international rankings. When at age 21, he wins his first ‘Classic’, he proves African riders can win big races. This programme hosts films that come out of ongoing liberation struggles. It brings into conversation cinema that is produced from and about the immediate present of Rojava and Palestine. The films in the programme were all produced as part of collectives that have been formed within the scope of revolutionary movements.   Xewn (Dream), by Gule Welat, 2023, 11’23’’ in Kurdish with English subtitles Dreams are the only way for a Kurdish Mother from Kobane to meet her Martyr son during many years…. Gule Welat is a Kurdish musician and filmmaker from Rojava. She worked as a Director Assistant in many productions of Rojava Film Commune like The End will Be Spectacular, Kobane and The Lonely Trees. Now she is a member of Kezî Women Film Collective. Kezî is a collective of women filmmakers from both Kurdish and international backgrounds, based in Rojava, in northeastern Syria. Over the years, their work has encompassed film production, movie screenings, and the training of women interested in cinema in Rojava.   Xewa Mirine (The Sleeping Death), by Zîlan Hemo, 2023, 15’07” in Kurdish with English subtitles A Kurdish YPJ (Women’s defense units) fighter wakes up heavily wounded in a house, all the family members around her are killed. She can hear that the house is surrounded by ISIS. She is out of ammunition. In her pocket there is only one bullet left. How is she going to use her last bullet? Zilan Hemo is a young writer and director from Kobanê. She studied filmmaking at the Academy of Arts Martyr Yekta Herekol. La rencontre de Pina avec le chef des bandits plongera le hameau dans une ère de famine, jusqu’à faire basculer le destin du pays tout entier.
