L’UGC de Brouckère, Bozar, le Cinéma Galeries et le Palace vous ouvriront leurs portes pour un voyage en image en plein cœur de la capitale.Compétitions à 3 niveaux, avant-premières, classiques restaurés, projections en plein air, masterclasses, séances pour le jeune public...Mais le BRIFF, c’est aussi l’occasion de rencontrer des invités prestigieux.Depuis 2018, Costa-Gavras, Terry Gilliam, Abel Ferrara, Claudia Cardinale, Mathieu Amalric, Samuel Benchetrit, Catherine Frot, Bouli Lanners, Emilie Dequenne, Fanny Ardant, Melvil Poupaud, Daphné Patakia, Benjamin Voisin, ainsi que des talents émergents, belges ou internationaux nous ont fait l'honneur de leur visite au BRIFF.Procurez-vous un PASS et assistez à tous les rendez-vous que le BRIFF vous propose !

This year again, the BRIFF promises you a concentrate of strong images and emotions on the big screen.Brussels will be brimming with a bouquet of emotions as the BRIFF takes place at Cinéma UGC, Cinéma Galeries, Palace, and Bozar as well as evening open-air screenings, thus offering an urban and cinematographic experience to the festival goers.

Darkness falls over Kinshasa and its 17 million inhabitants. It is just before
Christmas, a few weeks before the elections and the people struggle to access
electric light. Kudi mobilises the residents of his Kisenso neighbourhood to
collect money for a new power cable. On Mount Mangengenge, a holy place
overlooking the city, Pastor Gédéon delivers a sermon about the light of Christ
as the path to life and truth. After his house is flooded by the Congo River,
Davido searches for a place to stay. He kills time with other young men, working
out and dreaming of a better future. Nelson Makengo is a Congolese director and
visual artist oscillating between contemporary art and cinema. With Tongo Saa
(Rising up at night), he signs a masterpiece of moving images and poetical
narration. It is presented in the space and darkness of Les Brigittines' ancient
chapel, in an immersive form of expanded cinema specially designed for the
festival. Between hope, disappointment and religious faith, Tongo Saa paints a
subtle and fragmented picture of a population that, despite the challenges, is
sublimated by the beauty of Kinshasa’s nights. This sensitive portrait shows us
the lights that are still shining when a city is plunged into darkness.

La nuit tombe sur Kinshasa et ses 17 millions d'habitant·es. Juste avant Noël et
quelques semaines avant les élections, des résident·es attendent et luttent pour
avoir accès à la lumière. Dans son quartier de Kisenso, Kudi mobilise les
habitant·es pour collecter de l'argent afin d'installer un nouveau câble
électrique. Sur le mont Mangengenge, un lieu saint qui surplombe la ville, le
pasteur Gédéon prononce un sermon sur la lumière du Christ qui nous guide vers
la vie et la vérité. Après que les débordements du fleuve Congo aient inondé sa
maison, Davido cherche un endroit où se loger. Il tue le temps en faisant de la
musculation avec d’autres jeunes hommes et rêve d’un avenir meilleur. Nelson
Makengo est un réalisateur et artiste visuel congolais dont la pratique oscille
entre l’art contemporain et le cinéma. Avec Tongo Saa (Rising up at night), il
signe un chef-d'œuvre qui assemble images et narration poétique. Dans l'espace
envoûtant de la chapelle des Brigittines, il est présenté sous une forme
immersive de cinéma élargi spécialement créée pour le festival. Entre espoir,
déception et foi, Tongo Saa dépeint de manière subtile et fragmentée une
population qui, malgré les défis, est sublimée par la beauté des nuits de
Kinshasa. Un portrait sensible des lumières qui brillent encore quand une ville
est plongée dans l'obscurité.

Kerst, enkele weken voor de verkiezingen en mensen hebben het moeilijk om
toegang te krijgen tot elektriciteit. Kudi mobiliseert de bewoners van zijn wijk
Kisenso om geld te verzamelen voor een nieuwe elektriciteitskabel. Op Mount
Mangengenge, een heilige plek die over de stad uitkijkt, preekt priester Gédéon
over het licht van Christus als het pad naar leven en waarheid. Nadat zijn huis
overstroomd raakte door de Congorivier is Davido op zoek naar onderdak. Samen
met andere jonge mannen verdrijft hij de tijd met fitnessen en dromen over een
betere toekomst. Nelson Makengo is een Congolese regisseur en beeldend
kunstenaar die werkt op het snijvlak van hedendaagse kunst en film. Met Tongo
Saa (Rising up at night) levert hij een meesterwerk af vol ontroerende beelden
en poëzie. Het wordt gepresenteerd in de mysterieuze ruimte van de oude
Brigittinenkapel, in een immersieve vorm van expanded cinema speciaal ontworpen
voor het festival. Tongo Saa toont ons de schoonheid van Kinshasa’s nachten en
brengt een gevoelig en gefragmenteerd portret van een bevolking tussen hoop,
teleurstelling en geloof. Over het licht dat blijft branden zelfs wanneer een
stad in duisternis is gehuld.

In 2016, French writer and photographer Carole Achache took her own life. After
Carole’s death, her daughter Mona Achache, a film director, discovers thousands
of photos, letters and recordings that Carole left behind, but these buried
secrets make her disappearance even more of an enigma. Through the power of
filmmaking and the beauty of incarnation with the help of actress Marion
Cotillard, the director brings her mother back to life to retrace her journey
and find out who she really was.

À la mort de sa mère, Mona Achache découvre des milliers de photos, de lettres
et d’enregistrements, mais ces secrets enfouis résistent à l’énigme de sa
disparition. Alors par la puissance du cinéma et la grâce de l’incarnation, elle
décide de la ressusciter pour rejouer sa vie et la comprendre.

Toen haar moeder stierf, ontdekte Mona Achache duizenden foto's, brieven en
opnames, maar deze begraven geheimen weerstonden het raadsel van haar

Next Generation, Please! provides a platform for young people aged 15 to 26 who
present themselves as conscious, creative, and articulate citizens in a society
where their opinions and ideas are worth being heard. Next Generation, Please!
is focused on the moving image this year. Five groups of young people present
the films they have been creating together with professionals for a year.
Discover the ideas, wishes, and dreams for the future of these young creatives
with a fresh perspective on society.
On May 19, we will get to see the results of one year of hard work in the form
of 4 screenings and 1 video installation.

profilent en tant que citoyens responsables, créatifs et autonomes dans une
société où leurs opinions et leurs idées méritent d'être entendues. Next
Generation, Please! est centré sur l'image en mouvement cette année. Cinq
groupes de jeunes présentent les films sur lesquels ils ont travaillé pendant un
an avec des professionnels. Découvrez les idées, les souhaits et les rêves pour
l'avenir de ces jeunes créatifs qui voient la société avec un regard neuf.
Le 19 mai, nous pourrons voir le résultat d'une année de travail assidu sous la
forme de quatre projections et d'une installation vidéo.

Teacher Sergio Correa arrives in good spirits at his new school in Matamoros,
Mexico. He soon discovers that the school has few resources and even less
enthusiasm to teach the youngsters. They often come from difficult home
situations and achieve the lowest test scores in the country. He decides to
completely change course and use 'radical' methods to inspire his pupils and
offer them a better future.

Takumi and his daughter Hana live in the village of Mizubiki near Tokyo. Like
the generations before them, they live a modest life in harmony with nature.
When it is announced one day that there are plans to build a glamping site near
Takumi's house with implications for their water supply, unrest arises among the
residents. The arrival of the glamping will change the peaceful community and
surrounding nature forever, and has severe implications for Takumi's life.
