Indian Dhrupad Singing with Ashish Dha

Beschrijving

Art Base presents an intimate concert of classical Dhrupad music by Ashish Dha, visiting artist from India. His vocal style is known as ‘saadhaaraNi geeti’ (“ordinary singing”), a specialty of the Daagarvaanee school of Dhrupad. His focus will be on slow, soulful aalaap, savouring the svar and tasting the raag as much as possible. He trained in this highly specialized, centuries-old form of naad yog (sound yoga) under the world-renowned maestro Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar, a 20th-generation scion of a musical lineage tracing back to the legendary Swami Haridas (guru of Tansen).

He will be accompanied by local artiste Greet Meert on the acoustic taanpuraa, the traditional drone instrument from South Asia, which has one of the richest and most complex spectrums of harmonic overtones of all musical instruments.

About Ashish Dha:

Naad yogi Ashīsh Dhā has spent years in India learning Hindustaanee classical raag music, Sanskrit, Indian culture, history and Hindu philosophy. He also studied Western classical music, musical programming and sound design at the California Institute of the Arts, from where he got an MFA degree in 2012. After some years of teaching music and sound yoga in Dublin, Ireland, he recently relocated to Pune, India, from where he teaches Indian music, mantra recitation, and more, online. His main focus now is musical meditation and somatic sound.
