Faux Plafond
Description
********** English **********
A false ceiling takes shape. Placed below the main ceiling and concealing all or part of it, it usually hides imperfections or technical equipment. In most cases, its presence improves the thermal and acoustic performance of a space while reducing its height. As it is not integral with the main ceiling it covers, it can take any shape you choose.
Faux Plafond reverses the function of the object, just as children do when building ephemeral huts. A reversible construction stretches out just above the bodies present. Faux Plafond draws attention to the materiality of the architectures that surround us in a world where physical spaces tend to become virtualised.
Belgian selection made by Les Halles de Schaerbeek, La Balsamine et Studio Thor. With the support of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (Brussels promotion).
Camille Bleker and Luna Pittau spend much of their time observing the ceilings that cover their bodies. Together, they create performances. Luna Pittau, initially trained in printmaking and then in Visual Arts (IUAV, Venice), went on to work in the field of re-use. Her practice was soon enriched by textile creations involving the sequence of repetitive gestures, whose performative dimension outweighs the final result. Her work tells the story of inhabited spaces and documents our relationship with place, time and memory.
Camille Bleker, architect, author and performer, has collaborated on deconstruction and recycling projects. The question of objects and their function then became a major preoccupation. In her work, which takes the form of a "laboratory" practice combining language and performative experimentation, she examines the relationships of our bodies and spaces to inanimate objects.

With his first solo exhibition in Belgium, Hsu Che-Yu presents a series of
objects and works that together form an original landscape on the idea of
mourning. The impressive triptych Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises takes
centre stage, consisting of three of his latest video works and as many stories
about loss. Zoo Hypothesis recounts the animal-to-animal mourning ritual created
by zookeepers who trained animals to kneel and perform gestures of worship to
commemorate animals that have died due to warfare. In Blank Photograph, the
memories of a terrorist bomber are juxtaposed with his brother's suicide in the
family home, presenting death as a tension between the individual and the
collective. Finally, Gray Room is a tribute to the artist's deceased
grandmother, recalling the experience of bodily perception in her house while
contemplating death and memory from a material perspective. To produce his video
works, Che-Yu works with the 3D scanning technique also used by the Taiwanese
police to collect forensic evidence, identify fragmented or decomposing bodies
and examine crime scenes. Multiple exercises in mourning that explore the
representations, constructions and alienations of memory and death as an
intimate event. A breathtaking experience.

l’impressionnant triptyque Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises.

rouw. Het indrukwekkende drieluik Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises staat
adembenemende ervaring.

Nacera Belaza is known for her meticulous, minimalist and mesmerising
choreography. Born in Algeria and now living in France, she translates diverse
influences and dance traditions into addictive kinetic scores which cannot leave
you unmoved. This is dance in its purest form, which needs to be experienced
rather than understood. Two core research principles in Belaza’s body of work
are ‘the circle’ and ‘rhythm’. In previous creations presented at the festival,
Le Cercle (2019) and L’Onde (2021), she uncovered these research principles
separately with determination and depth. Now they come together for the first
time: on the one hand, the power of the circle in space, tracing its orbit
around an unchanging centre, as if organising the disorder of disparate lives;
on the other, the rhythm digging into time, lifting up bodies to grant them a
dazzling freedom. Combined, the confrontation becomes a ritual practice opening
up to a perpetual motion, a loophole to infinity. In this unique experience, the
audience surrounds the dancers to contain their incredible energy. Not to be

‘Die Kunst der Fuge occupies an almost mythical place in the oeuvre of Johann
Sebastian Bach. Not only on account of its vast scope and impenetrability, but
also because Bach worked on it until his death, which gives the listener the
impression that this is his musical testament.’
— Bernard Foccroulle
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her exploration of Johann Sebastian Bach’s
oeuvre with the work that, in a sense, is the pinnacle of his life’s work: Die
Kunst der Fuge. The remarkable thing about this cycle of eighteen canons and
fugues, performed live by Bernard Foccroulle on the organ of the Cathedral of St
Michael and St Gudula, is the exceptional power of imagination that emanates
from what is ultimately a minimum of musical material: the first theme consists
of only twelve notes, spread over four measures.
The choreography, developed with Radouan Mriziga, starts out from the same
principle by working on four lines and in the intermediate space. In addition,
the choreography is also inspired by the circumstances in which Bach composed
Die Kunst der Fuge. He worked on this cycle until the end of his life, and the
final fugue, composed with the musical notes reflecting the letters of his
surname, was never finished. This incompleteness resonates forcefully with our
current sense of powerlessness as we face a global catastrophe, despite being at
the height of our powers.
