With his first solo exhibition in Belgium, Hsu Che-Yu presents a series of objects and works that together form an original landscape on the idea of mourning. The impressive triptych Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises takes centre stage, consisting of three of his latest video works and as many stories about loss. Zoo Hypothesis recounts the animal-to-animal mourning ritual created by zookeepers who trained animals to kneel and perform gestures of worship to commemorate animals that have died due to warfare. In Blank Photograph, the memories of a terrorist bomber are juxtaposed with his brother's suicide in the family home, presenting death as a tension between the individual and the collective. Finally, Gray Room is a tribute to the artist's deceased grandmother, recalling the experience of bodily perception in her house while contemplating death and memory from a material perspective. To produce his video works, Che-Yu works with the 3D scanning technique also used by the Taiwanese police to collect forensic evidence, identify fragmented or decomposing bodies and examine crime scenes. Multiple exercises in mourning that explore the representations, constructions and alienations of memory and death as an intimate event. A breathtaking experience.

Pour sa première exposition en Belgique, Hsu Che-Yu présente une série d’objets et d’œuvres qui créent ensemble un paysage inédit sur l’idée du deuil, dont l’impressionnant triptyque Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises. Composé de trois vidéos, il nous raconte autant de façons de se représenter la mort. Zoo Hypothesis relate le rituel de deuil animalier créé par des gardien·nes de zoo de Taipei, qui ont entraîné des animaux à se prosterner pour commémorer des animaux morts à la suite de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Dans Blank Photograph, les souvenirs d’un auteur d’attentats à la bombe sont juxtaposés au suicide de son frère dans la maison familiale, représentant le décès comme objet de tension entre l’individu et la collectivité. Gray Room est un hommage à la grand-mère de l’artiste, qui rappelle l’expérience physique vécue dans sa maison à partir d’une perspective matérielle de la mémoire. Pour réaliser ces œuvres vidéographiques, Che-Yu se sert de la technique de scanning 3D, aussi utilisée par la police taïwanaise pour recueillir des preuves médico-légales, identifier des corps fragmentés ou examiner des scènes de crime. Des exercices de deuil qui explorent les représentations, les constructions et les aliénations de la mémoire et la mort en tant qu’événement intime. Une expérience à couper le souffle.

Met zijn eerste solotentoonstelling in België presenteert Hsu Che-Yu een reeks objecten en werken die samen een bijzonder landschap vormen rond het idee van rouw. Het indrukwekkende drieluik Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises staat centraal, bestaande uit drie van zijn recentste videowerken die elk een verhaal van verlies vertellen. Zoo Hypothesis zoomt in op een dier-tot-dier rouwritueel, waarbij verzorgers dieren trainden om andere – door oorlogsgeweld omgekomen – dieren te herdenken. In Blank Photograph worden de herinneringen van een terroristische bommenlegger en de zelfmoord van zijn broer in het ouderlijke huis naast elkaar geplaatst, waarbij de dood verschijnt als een spanning tussen het individu en het collectief. Gray Room, tot slot, is een eerbetoon aan de overleden grootmoeder van de kunstenaar. Het werk brengt de fysieke ervaring van haar huis in herinnering, en benadert de dood en het geheugen vanuit een materieel perspectief. Voor de creatie van deze video-installatie werkt Che-Yu met de 3D-scantechniek die ook door de Taiwanese politie wordt gebruikt om forensisch bewijs te verzamelen, lichamen te identificeren en plaatsen delict te onderzoeken. Meerdere oefeningen in rouw die de representaties, constructies en vervormingen van het geheugen, en de dood als intieme gebeurtenis verkennen. Een adembenemende ervaring.
