Thanks to the local collective Rebel Up!, invited by Bozar, the kora will also
resonate during the night. Together, they present a bold lineup of DJs and live
artists, in collaboration with Reset.
How to bring together two vastly different sonic universes without losing their
essence? Malian kora master Ballaké Sissoko and Italian composer Lorenzo Bianchi
Hoesch have very much succeeded in fusing their two worlds: kora music and
electronic soundscapes. The two musicians go in search of common roots, seeing
the West African string instrument as seed and electronics as sunlight. Bianchi
Hoesch live records the acoustic kora and envelops it with layers of
electronics. Far from being opposites, the two musical worlds merge into a
meditative yet compelling performance. A sound collab that fits perfectly within
the Belgian-Dutch music label Rebel Up!, co-organisers of the evening.
Kora Days is a collaboration with Muziekpublique and Reset. This concert will
take place at Reset, where the former Dexia offices were transformed into a
temporary club and auditorium.
The tickets for the concert of Ballaké Sissoko and Lorenzo Bianchi are limited.
Free choice of seating. One ticket gives access to the whole evening.

Description

Traditional folk melodies, intricate rhythms, and innovative techniques form a
rich musical foundation shared by the grandmasters Béla Bartók and György
Ligeti.
Enthralled by electronic music, Ligeti crafted his own unique musical language.
The polyrhythms he pioneered possess intricate structures and are entirely
distinct, with his piano concerto serving as a quintessential illustration. He
regarded it as one of his most intricate and technically demanding compositions,
while others may consider it his most provocative work.
While the title of Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra may initially appear somewhat
contradictory, it is indeed apt - Bartók grants each instrument group within the
100-piece orchestra its own moment in the spotlight. Like a skilled general, he
reunites the troops at the piece’s conclusion, culminating in an exhilarating
finale.
Following its premiere in New York in 1944, Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra
quickly conquered Europe, thanks to the Brussels Philharmonic's precursor, the
Grand Symphony Orchestra, which performed the European premiere in 1946 in
Paris. Bartók expressed particular enthusiasm for the performance: "I can hardly
find the words to express my admiration for the orchestra and its conductor, Mr.
André. The orchestra is among the finest in the world..."

Jeanne Colin began in 2017 as a dancer and performer with Ayelen Parolin, Éric
Minh Cuong Castaing, Tumbleweed, Louise Vanneste... exploring the relationship
between movement and the unconscious, blending disciplines and practices such as
dance, hypnosis and drawing. With Abysses, the young choreographer continues
this exploration by focusing on dreams and REM sleep, a state of rest in which
nightmares and fear prevail. Starting from this dichotomy between reality and
fiction, feeling and imagination, her piece begins in the form of a reading
after which she allows the body and senses to drift towards a free, liberated
dance. Playing physically and metaphorically with ropes, knots and lianas,
Abysses connects what is hidden and divided.

Brussels. Her curiosity of creation centers around the narrative that a body
holds on the stage and how it can influence the audience’s position. Through
uncanny and cute satires, the question of power is posed, also referring to her
relationship with her own culture. She also holds a strong interest in music and
sound creation, which plays a vital role in the performance.

It’s just a phase
Performed by Jacob Bousset, Samuele Baschieri and Rünno Tammela
Choreographed by Nicolas Dang with the collaboration of the performers
There are, as appears, three white cis men sitting, staring at the audience.
Their behavior towards us and each other is concealed by the repetitive Piano
Phase of Steve Reich. With the music reflecting the repetition and
performativity of societal norms, this vicious circle both in soundscape and in
social settings sees three individuals' passage through moments of violence and
vulnerability. This work draws to question the notion of masculinity perpetuated
through the presence of gender norms and, consequently, the state of
internalised homophobia. Using a play of contradictions and observing moments of
sensuality and susceptibility, as the music of Reich begins to shift in
conjunction with shifting power dynamics, we begin to see an abstraction of
experiences and a transformation of these norms.
In Piano Phase, Steve Reich employs the compositional process of phasing or
phase shifting. In unison two pianos play a loop, as one slightly accelerates,
they progressively fall out of phase, creating an echo. It then becomes a new
melody when the superposed loops are back in phase with a delay. It’s just a
phase is a play between the 'phases’ in the musical score and the misconception
of queerness as 'a phase’.
