After more than ten years, sitarist Anoushka Shankar returns to Bozar for an exclusive European tour. Daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, she is a leading figure in Indian classical music, but also an artist with a personal and contemporary musical identity. She is an exceptional instrumentalist, producer, film composer and activist for women and refugee’s rights. She’s the first woman to have received the British House of Commons Shield, and was the first Indian musician nominated for a Grammy Award - she has a total of 9 nominations! At Bozar, with her new quintet of unmissable soloists, she will present her new compositions, as well as some arrangements from her Grammy-nominated album Between Us...

Après plus de 10 ans, la sitariste Anoushka Shankar fait son grand retour à Bozar dans le cadre d’une tournée européenne exclusive. Fille du légendaire Ravi Shankar, elle est une figure de proue de la musique classique indienne, mais aussi une artiste à l’identité musicale personnelle et pleinement contemporaine. Instrumentiste exceptionnelle, elle est aussi productrice, compositrice de musique de film et militante pour les droits des femmes et des réfugiés. Elle est la première femme à recevoir le British House of Commons Shield, et a été la première musicienne indienne nommée aux Grammy Awards – elle totalise pas moins de 9 nominations ! À Bozar, avec son nouveau quintette composé de solistes incontournables, elle vous présente ses nouvelles compositions, ainsi que quelques arrangements de son album Between Us…, nommé aux Grammy Awards.

Ze is een uitzonderlijke instrumentaliste, en bovendien producer, filmcomponiste en activiste voor vrouwen- en vluchtelingenrechten. Ze is de eerste vrouw die het British House of Commons Shield kreeg, en was de eerste Indiase muzikante die genomineerd werd voor een Grammy Award. In totaal veroverde ze niet minder dan 9 nominaties! With his ensemble En Chordais, he brings together different musical traditions from Greece and its surrounding regions and mixes East and West. With an instrumental combination that includes oud, qanûn, piano and percussion, and, of course, vocals, the ensemble mines eight centuries of music in a sublime and surprising way. Kalaitzidis and his musicians descend on Bozar with a programme on exile. This theme is close to Kalaitzidis' heart, as he himself was born into a family of exiles. Let yourself be carried away by the richness of the timbres and the exceptional musical feeling with which Kalaitzidis and En Chordais make this universal theme audible. ********** English ********** The story begins in Kidal, capital of Mali’s eighth administrative region. Tea simmered on the fire while Pino, Cheikh and Mossa talked. They decided to form a band with just two old “home-made” guitars. A few years later, the band Tamikrest was performing in Australia and the United States. Tamikrest (“connection” in Tamasheq) brings together five musicians from Mali, Niger, Algeria and France. The band sings about the hopes of a free world, to music enriched by modern rock influences. Tamikrest seeks to share Tuareg poetry and culture beyond the vast Sahara Desert. With its hypnotic grooves, poetic lyrics and electrifying concerts, the band naturally establishes itself as a force to be reckoned with on the global music scene. ********** Français ********** L'histoire commence à Kidal, capitale de la huitième région du Mali. Le thé mijote sur le feu… Pino, Cheikh et Mossa discutent. Ils décident de former un groupe avec seulement deux vieilles guitares « faites maison ». Op muziek die gekleurd wordt door moderne rockinvloeden, bezingt de band de hoop op een vrije wereld. Tamikrest wil de poëzie en cultuur van de Toearegs delen tot buiten de immense uitgestrektheid van de Sahara. Richard Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs – posthumous gems by two of the greatest song composers if the twentieth century – sing, each in their own way, about the big questions of life. The melancholy nature of Strauss’s late romanticism is at odds with the wit and charm of Benjamin Britten’s pre-war Cabaret Songs. Based on poems by his good friend W.H. Auden, ‘Tell me the Truth About Love’, ‘Funeral Blues’, ‘Johnny’ and ‘Calypso’ reveal, with their spirited, jazzy undertones, a very different facet of the composer. After unforgettable appearances in Les Huguenots and Bastarda, among others, soprano Lenneke Ruiten will now sing for the first time a recital on the stage of La Monnaie. ********** Français ********** C’est dans la mort qu’on trouve la plénitude ; et c’est peut-être chez son voisin qu’on trouvera la vérité de l’amour.
