Raul Kohli
Raul Kohli (star of hit BBC podcast - Comic Sanskrit) has fast become one of the
most captivating acts on the circuit. As one of the few Asians to have grown up
in the far north of England (Newcastle Upon Tyne, he’s been blessed with a
Worldview that upends ethnicity, culture and class. Combining ‘superb political
comedy’ (The Scotsman) with surreal storytelling, Raul Kohli is a recognized
name in Comedy. His Edinburgh Fringe debut show Newcastle Brown Male was one of
BBC Radio 4, The Huffington Post & the Skinny’s Top Picks of the Fringe 2016,
while his most recent: All My Heroes Are Dead, in Jail or Touched Up Your Nan
was nominated for Best Show at the Leicester Comedy Festival.

À l’occasion de la sortie du nouveau volume de son anthologie sonore des
phénomènes occultes, l'auteur et réalisateur radio Philippe Baudouin vient
présenter son projet Spectra Ex Machina (Sub Rosa), lors d'une soirée
exceptionnelle.
Le second volume de cette anthologie sonore explore les liens entre musique et
médiumnité, art vocal et sorcellerie : Aleister Crowley, Uri Geller, Rosemary
Brown ou bien encore Elvis Presley font ainsi résonner leur voix de l'au-delà.
Au programme de cette soirée : séance d'écoute de quelques extraits du disque et
discussion avec Philippe Baudouin, Stéphanie Peel et Christian Chelman sur
l'histoire du spiritisme et ses croisements inattendus avec la question
musicale.
À cette occasion, les deux premiers volumes de Spectra Ex Machina seront
proposés à la vente.
Philippe Baudouin est réalisateur radio et maître de conférences associé à
l’Université Paris-Saclay. Il est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages et articles sur
l’histoire de l’occultisme dont Apparitions : Les Archives de la France hantée
(Hoëbeke, 2021) et Surnaturelles : une histoire visuelle des femmes médiums
(Pyramyd, 2021). Depuis 2019, il poursuit en collaboration avec le label Sub
Rosa le projet Spectra Ex Machina, consacré aux archives sonores du paranormal.
Stéphanie Peel est chercheuse indépendante et doctorante à l’Université libre de
Bruxelles. Son compte Instagram « Les Occultées » est consacré à l’histoire des
femmes médiums.
Christian Chelman est illusionniste et collectionneur. Il est également le
fondateur et l’actuel conservateur du Surnatéum, Muséum d’Histoire Surnaturelle
de Bruxelles.
Aux côtés de Christophe Hardiquest et d'Yves Mattagne, on retrouvera "Loïc fou
de cuisine" et une brochette d'ex-candidats Top Chef !
Au-delà de la scène culinaire, les visiteurs auront aussi l’occasion de fêter et
profiter d’un moment musical grâce aux nombreux concerts organisés. D’autres
animations rythmeront également le festival puisqu’il y aura des ateliers
proposés pour petits et grands : 150 ateliers culinaires et d’art urbain, 40
concerts, dj et performances et enfin un marché de producteurs centré sur la
consommation locale et artisanale.

Kathrin Röggla is the author of novels, plays, radio plays and essays in which
she mercilessly dissects our crisis-ridden society. The stories in her
collection "Night Programme" are no exception: she shows no pity for her
characters, who wander around, lost, in a globalized, neoliberal world. At Passa
Porta she will discuss the collection with Inge Arteel and her translators, and
she will read from her book (in German, with Dutch translation).
The cracks in the lives and worlds that Kathrin Röggla describes are not there
to let the light in. The mundane takes on a terrifying character in her stories.
She describes a world that consists of conferences, action groups and property
companies, with meetings populated by experts and lobbyists who listen to
speeches that have no consequences and are part of processes that lead nowhere.
We join her characters on planes that are stationary on the tarmac or are
forever hovering over Morocco; we occupy an insurance company’s open-plan
office; we ride in a taxi to the airport of Mumbai; we go to a class reunion; or
we join a chat forum where medical complaints are discussed. Röggla creates a
recognizable yet surprising world in which no one seems at ease. Suspicion
prevails and disorientation and miscommunication fuel unrest. Many characters
struggle with memory gaps while life rumbles on in a senselessly destructive
manner.
And yet Kathrin Röggla’s stories are a joy to read. Her scrupulously clear style
and dry humour make the sense of menace bearable. Her inventive vocabulary also
makes for a unique reading experience. Or does anyone know another writer who
enriches her stories with words like ‘victim competition’, ‘meeting tumult’,
‘alcohol silence’, ‘diagnostic front’, ‘prefab housing-estate monster’, ‘income
biography’, ‘catastrophe expert’ or ‘usufruct minimization’, to name but a few
of her many delightful coinages?

Nachtprogramma, the Dutch translation of her short-story collection
Nachtsendung.

Austrian author Kathrin Röggla is one of the most important voices in
contemporary German-language literature. In her novels, plays, radio plays and
essays, she sheds an all-consuming light on our crisis-ridden society. Her
idiosyncratic oeuvre has earned her several awards, including the
Alexander-Sacher-Masoch-Preis, Arthur-Schnitzler-Preis, Italo-Svevo-Preis and
Wortmeldungen-Literaturpreis. In 2024 Uitgeverij het balanseer published
Nachtprogramma, the Dutch translation of her short-story collection
Nachtsendung.

Inge Arteel is a professor of German-language literature at Vrije Universiteit
Brussel. Her research focuses on contemporary Austrian literature (mainly
Friederike Mayröcker and Elfriede Jelinek), developments in drama and theatre,
and the radio play. She has translated several of Elfriede Jelinek’s works into
Dutch, most recently Angabe der Person as Persoonsgegevens (Querido, 2023).

uit haar bundel Nachtprogramma toont ze geen medelijden met haar personages, die
verloren lopen in een geglobaliseerde, neoliberale wereld. Ze praat er in Passa
Porta over met Inge Arteel en haar vertalers, en ze leest voor (in het Duits,
met Nederlandse vertaling) uit haar boek.
De barsten in de levens en werelden die Kathrin Röggla beschrijft, zijn er niet
om het licht binnen te laten. Het alledaagse krijgt een angstaanjagend karakter
in haar verhalen. Ze beschrijft een wereld die bestaat uit conferenties,
actiegroepen en vastgoedvennootschappen, met vergaderingen die bevolkt worden
door experten, specialisten en lobbyisten die luisteren naar toespraken zonder
gevolgen en deel uitmaken van processen zonder uitkomst.
We gaan met haar personages aan boord van vliegtuigen, stilstaand op het tarmac
of voor eeuwig boven Marokko, we zitten aan een landschapsbureau van een
verzekeringsmaatschappij, we rijden in een taxi naar de luchthaven van Mumbai,
we gaan naar een klassenreünie of we lezen mee op een chatforum waar medische
klachten worden besproken. Röggla creëert een herkenbaar en tegelijk bevreemdend
universum waarin niemand zich op zijn gemak lijkt te bewegen. Achterdocht
overheerst, desoriëntatie en verstoorde communicatie stoken de onrust op. Heel
wat personages kampen met gaten in hun geheugen, en alles gaat zinloos
vernietigend door.
Toch zijn de verhalen van Kathrin Röggla een genot om te lezen. Haar
kraakheldere stijl en droge humor maken de dreiging draaglijk. Ook haar
vindingrijke woordenschat zorgt voor een unieke leeservaring. Of kent er iemand
nog een schrijver die haar verhalen verrijkt met woorden als
slachtoffercompetitie, vergadertumult, alcoholstilte, diagnosefront,
prefabwoonwijkmonster, inkomensbiografie, catastrofe-expert of
vruchtgebruikminimalisering, om maar enkele van de vele heerlijke
samenstellingen op te noemen?
Kathrin Röggla zal in Passa Porta samen met haar vertalers de Nederlandse
vertaling van haar verhalenbundel Nachtsendung voorstellen.

Nous prenons l'avion avec ses personnages, immobiles sur le tarmac ou dans le
ciel marocain, nous nous asseyons au bureau des paysages d'une compagnie
d'assurance, nous nous rendons en taxi à l'aéroport de Mumbai, nous assistons à
une réunion de classe ou nous lisons sur un forum de discussion où l'on discute
de problèmes de santé. Röggla crée un univers reconnaissable mais aliénant dans
lequel personne ne semble à l'aise. La suspicion règne, la désorientation et la
communication perturbée attisent l'agitation. Plusieurs personnages se débattent
avec des trous de mémoire, et tout se détruit de manière insensée.
Pourtant, les histoires de Kathrin Röggla sont un plaisir à lire. Son style vif
et son humour pince-sans-rire rendent la menace supportable. Son vocabulaire
inventif rend également la lecture unique. Quelqu'un connaît-il un autre
écrivain qui enrichit ses récits de mots tels que compétition entre victimes,
tumulte des réunions, silence de l'alcool, front du diagnostic, monstre de
l'habitat préfabriqué, biographie des revenus, expert en catastrophes ou
minimisation de l'usufruit, pour ne citer que quelques-unes des nombreuses et
délicieuses compositions ?
Kathrin Röggla, accompagnée de ses traducteurs, présentera la traduction

dévorante sur notre société en crise. Son œuvre singulière a été récompensée à
plusieurs reprises, notamment par les prix Alexander-Sacher-Masoch,

Balanseer a publié le recueil de nouvelles Night Programme.

À l'Orangerie, vous danserez sur les rythmes endiablés de la productrice et DJ
argentine Tayhana (connue pour ses collaborations avec Rosalía, entre autres),
de l'enfant terrible ougandais Nsasi, de la princesse de la rave sud-africaine
River Moon (alias Saint Deepthroat), de Jonas Alexander et d'iced lattina,
tandis que la Franco-russe Jenys viendra jouer sa pop audacieuse.
La fête se poursuivra à la Rotonde, où le trio mexicain de cyber néo-perreo
déchaînera le dancefloor aux côtés du duo hyper-pop new-yorkais Frost Children
et des bruxellois Le Talu et Viva Los DJs.

(bekend van haar werk met onder andere Rosalía), de Oegandese enfant terrible
Nsasi, de Zuid-Afrikaanse rave-prinses River Moon (aka Saint Deepthroat), Jonas
Alexander en iced lattina, terwijl de Frans-Russische Jenys haar gedurfde pop
ten gehore brengt.
Het feest gaat verder in La Rotonde, waar het Mexicaanse cyber neo-perreo trio
de dansvloer zal rocken naast het New Yorkse hyperpop duo Frost Children en de
Brusselse Le Talu en Viva Los DJ's.
