NaturArchy - Towards a natural contract

L'exposition aborde les questions de l'écologie profonde, de la durabilité et de la décolonisation de la nature. Une série d'œuvres art/science qui explorent et interrogent l'enchevêtrement de l'humain et du non-humain, les technologies et nouveaux matériaux écologiques, la nature et le droit, l'écologie et l'économie, les savoirs anciens et actuels. Des océans mondiaux aux flux hydriques ; de la contamination et des bactéries aux points de basculement climatiques, aux pollinisateurs et aux espaces naturels menacés ; de l'intelligence naturelle et artificielle aux valeurs non humaines, aux forêts, aux terres, aux sols, au compostage ; du chagrin et du deuil aux rituels, à l'émerveillement et à l'action collective.
NaturArchy est le thème et le concept curatorial de la quatrième édition (2022-2024) de Résonances, l'initiative phare du JRC SciArt.

Après deux années de réflexion approfondie, de recherche et de cocréation, qui ont débuté par une université d'été au Joint Research Centre en 2022 et se sont poursuivies par des résidences artistiques au JRC en 2023, ces œuvres appellent de manière provocante à être juxtaposées à des artefacts du patrimoine naturel et culturel.

Pour réimaginer notre sentiment et notre appartenance au monde ; pour répondre à la relation profondément symbiotique entre l'homme et l'environnement, à travers le jeu et l'exploration de nouvelles configurations possibles du monde.

De tentoonstelling onderzoekt tegelijkertijd diepecologische kwesties, de duurzaamheid en de dekolonisatie van de natuur. De getoonde kunst- en wetenschappelijke werken analyseren en bevragen onderwerpen zoals de verstrengeling van mens en niet-mens, de verbanden tussen groene technologieën en nieuwe materialen, natuur en recht, ecologie en economie, oude en nieuwe kennis. Van oceanen tot waterstromen, van vervuiling en bacteriën tot omslagpunten in het klimaat, over bestuivers en gebieden met natuurlijke risico’s; van natuurlijke en kunstmatige intelligentie tot niet-menselijke waarden en normen, bossen, land, bodem, compostering; van verdriet en rouw tot rituelen, van verwondering tot collectieve actie.

NaturArchy is het thema en het curatoriale concept van de vierde editie (2022-2024) van Resonances, het vlaggenschipinitiatief van JRC SciArt dat samenwerking tussen kunstenaars, wetenschappers en beleidsmakers bevordert.
NaturArchy wil door middel van artistieke, wetenschappelijke en juridische uitingen onderzoeken hoe het verstrekken van een convenant aan de natuur en haar fenomenen, dat haar volledig integreert in onze samenleving, onze antropocentrische relatie met de natuur kan herdefiniëren. Door wetenschap en recht, rede en stijl, kunst en oordeel, beleid en verbeelding met elkaar te verbinden, wil NaturArchy het westerse relatiepatroon tussen mens en niet-mens opnieuw vormgeven in een poging om de vele wonderen van de natuur, of het nu sterrenstof of DNA is, een juridische aanwezigheid en persoonlijkheid te geven.
Na twee jaar aanhoudend onderzoek en co-creatie, dat van start ging met een zomercursus in het Joint Research Centre in 2022 en verdergezet werd met artistieke residenties in het JRC in 2023, eisen deze werken op provocerende wijze om naast artefacten van natuurlijk en cultureel erfgoed te worden geplaatst. Om ons gevoel van plaats en verbondenheid met de wereld opnieuw te verbeelden; om te reageren op de verstrengelde en diep symbiotische relatie tussen mens en milieu, door middel van spel en verkenning en nieuwe mogelijke wereldconfiguraties.

The exhibition probes issues of deep ecology, sustainability and the decolonisation of nature. A number of art and science works explore and query nature and law, the entanglement of human and non-human, green technologies and new materials, nature and law, ecology and economy, ancient and new knowledge. From global oceans to water flows, from contamination and bacteria to climate tipping points, pollinators, and landscapes of natural hazards; from natural and artificial intelligence to non-human values, forests, lands, soils, composting; from grief and mourning to rituals, wonder and collective action.
NaturArchy is the theme and curatorial concept of the fourth edition (2022-2024) of Resonances, the flagship initiative of JRC SciArt which fosters collaborations between artists, scientists and policymakers.

NaturArchy aims to explore – through artistic, scientific and legal expressions – how providing Nature and its phenomena with a contract that integrates her totally into our society can redefine our anthropocentric relationship with Nature. Intersecting science and law, reason and style, art and judgment, policy and imagination, NaturArchy wants to re-imagine the western relation of human and non-human, in an attempt to ensure juridical persona to Nature’s many wonders, be they stardust or DNA.

After two years of deep inquiry, research and co-creation, which began with a summer school at Joint Research Centre in 2022 and continued with artistic residencies at JRC in 2023, these works provocatively call to be juxtaposed to artefacts of natural and cultural heritage. To re-imagine our sense of place and belonging to the world; to respond to the entangled and profoundly symbiotic relationship between human and environment, through play and exploration of new possible configurations of the world.
