If change is to come, we must become the change ourselves. This belief unites

against the regime’s injustice on a daily basis. After her colleagues from the
Viasna Human Rights Centre are arrested, Darya continues to work in exile. And
in Belarus, 74-year-old Nina persists in her protest with quiet tenacity,
reconciled to the threat of detention. Tanya, founder of the Watch Docs human

When Russia invades all of Ukraine, the Belarusian civil society will face a new
struggle. Even as the noose gradually tightens around the last resisters in
Belarus, hope for change never dies.

YOURS,
one collective process, five films, in homage to Chantal Akerman
directed by Eva Giolo, Rebecca Jane Arthur, Katja Mater, Sirah Foighel Brutmann,
Eitan Efrat, Maaike Neuville
2023, 82’, VO EN, FR, NL & ST EN, NL
A group of artists were invited to be inspired by the work of the well-known,
Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman, specifically her film 'News from Home'
(1976). The busy city of New York serves as the film’s main character.
Meanwhile, we hear Akerman’s voice reading letters from her mother in Brussels.
She recounts daily anecdotes from the home front and increasingly urgent
requests for news from New York.
The artists made one film together: each with their own voice, style, and
starting point. During the working process, questions arose such as: how do you
as an artist relate to another film practice, how do you create a collective
work while maintaining your individuality?
You’ll see no less than five different films within one kaleidoscopic film:
'Stone, Hat, Ribbon and Rose' by Eva Giolo, 'Barefoot Birthdays on Unbreakable
Glass' by Rebecca Jane Arthur, 'When Things Fall Apart' by Katja Mater, 'Un Âne'
by the artistic duo Sirah Foighel Brutmann and Eitan Efrat, and 'The possibility
of being sea' by Maaike Neuville. Details such as letters and metros, and themes
such as dislocation, detached city life, alienation versus feeling at home,
distance versus proximity, and the mother-daughter relationship echo Akerman’s
films. Unfortunately, the artists are no longer able to engage directly with the
filmmaker, who passed away in 2015. However, this joint work attests to a way of
engaging in dialogue with her work.

This film will be screened extra muros at Cinema RITCS.
Following 2 earlier films about Buñuel, Espada now explores the
cross-pollination between Buñuel and Surrealism, the art movement that emerged
in the 1920s with standard-bearers such as René Magritte, André Breton and Dalí.
Luis Buñuel, one of the greatest precursors of surrealist cinema through works
like Un chien andalou and L’Âge d’Or, began to move away from this movement but
never completely abandoned it. Espada creates a full and nuanced portrait of
this extraordinary international artist, whose wit, scepticism and profound
respect for human frailty seems more necessary than ever today.
Javier Espada designed the contents of the permanent exhibition of the Buñuel de
Calanda Center. He has created the Festival Internacional Buñuel Calanda
conceived as a film tribute to Luis Buñuel in his homeland, and has directed it
for 10 editions. He has curated multiple exhibitions related to Buñuel and
cinema, and is a widely respected filmmaker focused on surrealism.

epistolaire liefde, onmogelijke liefde...
Fest Ghent On Tour, Cinea, Fondation Chantal Akerman, and Cinematek.
