“La Spire est née du désir de déployer la suspension sur fond d’un ciel qui nous est commun. Je l’ai imaginée comme une structure-sculpture, à la fois légère et monumentale, l’élévation horizontale d’une spirale en filin d’acier, formant trois boucles successives de sept mètres de diamètre, sur dix-huit mètres de longueur.” Chloé MogliaDes femmes habitent cet espace du suspens et du suspense. Elles portent haut l’étonnement de nous faire découvrir les ressorts cachés d’une puissance non ostensible. Parce qu’a priori, force, puissance, ténacité et détermination n’iraient pas avec douceur et sensibilité et que les a priori demandent à être mis à l’épreuve. Cinq suspensives et une musicienne invitent le public à suivre le fil de cette ascension spectaculaire.

“La Spire is ontstaan vanuit het verlangen om het fenomeen van de vering
te ontvouwen tegen de achtergrond van de hemel die ons zo vertrouwd is. Ik heb het geheel opgevat als een lichte en monumentale structuur-sculptuur, als het ware een horizontale spiraal van staaldraad, bestaande uit drie opeenvolgende loopings elk met een diameter van zeven meter, over een lengte van achttien meter.” Chloé MogliaDeze ruimte van suspens wordt ingenomen door vrouwen. Ze willen ons koste wat het kost de verborgen veringen doen ontdekken van een niet ostentatieve kracht. Want er wordt van uitgegaan dat kracht, volharding en vastberadenheid nooit kunnen samengaan met zachtheid en gevoeligheid en een dergelijke aanname moet uitgetest worden. Vijf hangende vrouwen en een muzikante nodigen het publiek uit om de draad van deze spectaculaire opstanding te volgen.

‘La Spire was born of the desire to unfold suspension against the backdrop of our common sky. I envisaged it as a structure-sculpture, concurrently light and monumental, the horizontal elevation of a steel wire spiral, forming three successive loops with a diameter of seven metres and a length of eighteen metres.’ Chloé MogliaWomen inhabit this space of suspension and suspense. They carry high the wonder of making us discover the hidden springs of a non-ostensible power. Because in theory, strength, power, tenacity and determination are not compatible with gentleness and sensitivity, and these assumptions need to be challenged. Five suspended figures and a musician invite the audience to follow the development of this spectacular ascent.

Carré de je est un hymne à la complicité, à l‘union fraternelle. Dans un espace simple et brut, se retrouvent deux frères. Seuls ou à l’unisson, ils développent un langage acrobatique en se confrontant l‘un à l‘autre pour mieux témoigner de leur lien. Dans un univers visuel et graphique plein d‘imaginaire, confusion et connexion s‘entrecroisent jusqu‘à semer le trouble et bousculer nos repères. Mélange des corps, acrobaties en boucles, on ne discerne plus celui qui mène la danse et celui qui suit, celui qui porte, celui qui vole dans les airs… Avec eux, équilibres, main à main et jeux icariens font résonner engagement et affrontement autant qu’étreinte et complicité pour mieux explorer, non sans humour, les arcanes de leur dualité. La lumière s’en mêle, le tapis glisse…

********** English ********** How do we feel the impact of events which are so much larger than us, move through us, and animate and activate our bodies all the time? Ten performers enact a glacially morphing tableau vivant on a mobile raft-like stage. Their voices generate a score that crescendos and resonates as they clutch, careen and cleave in a space too small to contain them, spilling off the edges. The scenes shown reference at times images from classical iconography. Tenderness and violence, sensuality and brute force cohabitate. The audience sits all around as if watching a boxing match, embanking the performers, close enough to smell their sweat and feel the steam of the spiralling scenes. Celebrated American choreographer Faye Driscoll returns to the festival with a multi-sensory flesh and breath sculpture made of bodies, sounds, scents, liquids and objects. She pushes her performers to their limits in this compelling, adventurous work, presented in the impressive Horta Hall, originally an exhibition space for sculptures. ********** English ********** in FR surtitled in NL EN 75 min On 20.05 the performance is followed by an aftertalk. This story unfolds in the north of Lebanon, at Nahr el Bared, in a refugee camp hastily set up to shelter Palestinian families fleeing the Nakba of 1948. Years later, in 2007, war broke out between the Lebanese army and an infiltrated Islamist group, leading to the destruction of part of the camp. It was at that moment that the first traces appeared of Orthosia, an ancient Roman city, which vanished after being overwhelmed by a tsunami in 551 AD and which, despite 15 centuries of vain attempts to find it, no-one could ever have imagined finding there. But how best to deal with this major discovery, as excavations would mean a ‘second displacement’ for the refugee families? The filmmakers and artists Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige use photography, installations, video and cinema to question the account of the imagination and writing about the story. Through this performance, created for the festival, they uncover the palimpsest of constant cycles of construction and destruction, calling on the possible narratives about the underground worlds.
