Une autre vie que la mienne raconte l’histoire d’Aniela Wesoly entre 1980 et 2022, et son expérience en tant que femme transgenre dans une petite ville polonaise peu accueillante. Le chemin vers la liberté en tant que femme trans révèle des défis dans le mariage, la parentalité, les tensions familiales et des interactions complexes qui la placent face à des situations impossibles. Quels choix, quels sacrifices, Aniela devra-t-elle faire ?
 
Malgorzata Szumowska (1973) et Michal Englert (1975) travaillent ensemble depuis leurs années à l'école de cinéma de Lódz. Après plusieurs courts-métrages qui ont révélé Szumowska comme une voix précieuse du cinéma, elle réalise son premier long métrage, Happy Man (2000). Par la suite, elle construit une filmographie solide en collaboration avec Englert. Parmi leurs œuvres notables, on retrouve Elles (avec Juliette Binoche), Body (prix du meilleur réalisateur à la Berlinale), et Mug (grand prix du jury au même festival). En 2023, leur dernier film, Woman of..., a été présenté à la Mostra de Venise en compétition officielle.

Woman of ... vertelt het verhaal van Aniela Wesoly tussen 1980 en 2022, en haar ervaringen als transgender vrouw in een weinig gastvrij klein stadje in Polen. De weg naar vrijheid als transvrouw onthult uitdagingen in het huwelijk, het ouderschap, familierelaties en complexe interacties die haar in onmogelijke situaties brengen. Welke keuzes en offers zal Aniela moeten maken?
Malgorzata Szumowska (1973) en Michal Englert (1975) werken al samen sinds hun jaren op de beroemde filmschool van Lódz. Na een reeks kortfilms die Szumowska al snel als een waardevolle nieuwe stem onthulden, regisseerde ze haar speelfilmdebuut, Happy Man (2000). Hierna begint ze aan een solide en overvloedige filmografie in samenwerking met Michal Englert en zijn ze aanwezig op alle grote competities. Bekende titels omvatten Elles, met Juliette Binoche in de hoofdrol, Body, prijs voor beste regisseur op de Berlinale en Mug, grote prijs van de jury op hetzelfde festival. In 2023 werd hun laatste film Woman of ... op het filmfestival van Venetië in de hoofdcompetitie voorgesteld.  
Deze film wordt vertoond als onderdeel van een Close-up gewijd aan Malgorzata Szumowska en Michal Englert.

Woman of...  tells the story of Aniela Wesoly, and her experience as a transgender woman in a small, unwelcoming Polish town, between 1980 and 2022. The path to freedom as a trans woman reveals challenges in marriage, parenthood, family tensions, and complex interactions that place her in impossible situations. What choices and sacrifices will Aniela have to make?
Malgorzata Szumowska (1973) and Michal Englert (1975) have worked together since their years at the renowned Lódz Film School. After several short films that established Szumowska as a valuable voice in cinema, she went on to make her first feature film, Happy Man (2000). She went on to build a solid filmography in collaboration with Englert. Their notable works include Elles (starring Juliette Binoche), Body (Best Director at the Berlinale), and Mug (Grand Jury Prize at the same festival). In 2023, their last film, Woman of... was presented in the Venice Film Festival’s official competition.
This film is being shown as part of a Close-up dedicated to Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert.
