The projects of Danh Vo –born in Vietnam and raised in Denmark– weave personal intimacy into broader themes of history, power and memory. He takes objects steeped in historical and design contexts and realigns them in his installations and sculptures. Aestheticised in a new way, they amplify and transcend their pasts. When invited to participate in this year’s festival, Vo put forth a recently acquired 1970s Fiat hearse. He wished to repurpose the sleekly designed vehicle, with its large windows and spacious interior, as a mobile flower shop nomadically serving the people of Brussels. He collab- orated with young car mechanics and electromechanics in training at a local school (Athénée Royal de la Rive Gauche, Laeken) to collectively design the transformation of the hearse. They worked together for months, taking art and floriculture courses, and composing bouquets using plant and mechanical components. Two worlds that seemed far apart now come together in this constant shift of meaning found at the centre of Vo’s artistic practice. The result is a new aesthetic venture, a visually iconic mobile sculpture circulating the city. Vo’s work is a complex image of our society with multiple conflicting registers, a memento mori, a chariot spreading beauty in the urban sphere.

Danh Vo –geboren in Vietnam en opgegroeid in Denemarken– verweeft in zijn werk persoonlijke onderwerpen met bredere thema’s zoals geschiedenis, macht en geheu- gen. Hij gebruikt hiervoor objecten met een beladen historische context en design, en herschikt ze tot installaties en sculpturen. Hun nieuwe esthetiek versterkt én overstijgt het verleden. Speciaal voor deze festivaleditie ging Vo aan de slag met een Fiat lijkwa- gen uit de jaren ‘70. Hij bouwde het strak vormgegeven voertuig, met zijn grote ramen en ruime interieur, om tot een mobiele bloemenwinkel. Voor de transformatie van de lijkwagen werkte Vo samen met Brusselse studenten auto- en elektromechanica van het Athénée Royal de la Rive Gauche in Laken. De studenten volgden ook kunst- en bloemschiklessen, en stelden boeketten samen met zowel organische als mechanische componenten. Twee werelden die ver uit elkaar lijken te liggen, vloeien zo samen, naar analogie met de voortdurende verschuiving van betekenissen die centraal staat in Vo’s artistieke praktijk. Het resultaat is een iconische sculptuur die de stad doorkruist tijdens het festival. Vo’s creatie schept een gelaagd beeld van onze maatschappij met haar tegenstrijdige registers, een memento mori in de vorm van een wagen die schoonheid rondstrooit in de stedelijke ruimte.

Danh Vo est né au Vietnam et a grandi au Danemark. Ses projets artistiques entremêlent l’intimité et des réflexions liées à l’histoire, au pouvoir ou à la mémoire. Il réalise des sculptures et des installations à partir d’objets au contexte historique et au design mar- qués, qu’il réarrange autrement pour leur trouver une nouvelle fonction et une nouvelle vie, plus ambiguë. Invité par le festival, Danh Vo a proposé de réaffecter un corbillard Fiat des années 1970 à la fonction de magasin de fleurs mobile. Pour transformer ce véhicule aux larges fenêtres et à l’intérieur spacieux, il a travaillé collectivement avec de jeunes étudiants en mécanique et électromécanique à l’Athénée Royal de la Rive Gauche à Bruxelles. Ils y ont travaillé des mois, suivant aussi des cours d’art et d’art floral afin de pouvoir composer des bouquets à base d'éléments végétaux et méca- niques. Deux mondes qui semblaient très éloignés se rejoignent dans un glissement de sens permanent, caractéristique de la pratique artistique de Danh Vo. En résulte une aventure esthétique, une sculpture mobile emblématique parcourant la ville. L’œuvre de Vo offre une image complexe de notre société aux registres contradictoires, un memento mori, un char pour disséminer de la beauté dans la ville.

********** English ********** How do we feel the impact of events which are so much larger than us, move through us, and animate and activate our bodies all the time? Ten performers enact a glacially morphing tableau vivant on a mobile raft-like stage. Their voices generate a score that crescendos and resonates as they clutch, careen and cleave in a space too small to contain them, spilling off the edges. The scenes shown reference at times images from classical iconography. Tenderness and violence, sensuality and brute force cohabitate. The audience sits all around as if watching a boxing match, embanking the performers, close enough to smell their sweat and feel the steam of the spiralling scenes. Celebrated American choreographer Faye Driscoll returns to the festival with a multi-sensory flesh and breath sculpture made of bodies, sounds, scents, liquids and objects. She pushes her performers to their limits in this compelling, adventurous work, presented in the impressive Horta Hall, originally an exhibition space for sculptures. ********** English ********** In this double bill, we are asked to rethink the relationship with our hands and reflect on their role in the present, past and future. By touching, we create relationships of proximity while distancing ourselves from the rest of our surroundings. But our touch is increasingly mediated by technologies that change how we experience ourselves and others. In Begüm Erciyas’ performance Hands Made, the hands of the audience will take centre stage. Accompanied by a soundtrack, spectators are asked to observe their hand and that of their neighbour, creating an effect of intimacy and alienation. Separated from the rest of the body, our hands become the focus of a reflection on handwork and touch. What have these hands been busy with? Who or what will they touch in the future? Nothing But Fingers is the other half of this double bill, a performance by visual artist Moe Satt. He became fascinated by the role of hand gestures in South African hunting communication as well as traditional dance in Myanmar and Southeast Asia, where human gestures can take animal forms. With dancer Liah Frank, he explores the expressive potential of hands and their ability to direct energy flows in the body, an extraordinary choreography in which the hands dictate the rest of the body until the final surrender. ********** Français ********** Deux performances, proposées ensemble dans un même programme, invitent à repenser la relation à nos mains et à réfléchir à leur rôle dans le présent, le passé et le futur. Dans Hands Made de Begüm Erciyas, les mains du public occupent une place centrale : guidé·es par une bande sonore, les spectateur·ices observent une de leur main et celle de leurs voisin·es, ce qui leur permet d’explorer des sentiments d’intimité et d’aliénation. Isolées du reste du corps, nos mains deviennent le centre d’une réflexion sur le travail manuel et le toucher. À quoi s’affairent-elles ? Qui ou quoi toucheront-elles à l’avenir ? En attirant notre attention sur notre toucher, de nouveaux rapports de proximité s’installent et la perception de ce qui nous entoure en sort modifiée. Nothing But Fingers est une performance du plasticien Moe Satt, qui a développé une recherche sur les gestes de mains utilisés dans la communication de chasse en Afrique du Sud et dans la danse traditionnelle de Birmanie et d’Asie du Sud-Est, où les gestes humains peuvent adopter des formes animales. Avec la danseuse Liah Frank, il explore le potentiel expressif des mains et leur faculté à diriger l’énergie à travers le corps. Une chorégraphie délicate, dans laquelle les mains commandent le reste du corps jusqu’à l’abandon total. ********** Nederlands ********** In deze double bill worden we uitgenodigd om onze relatie tot onze handen te heroverwegen en stil te staan bij hun rol in heden, verleden en toekomst. Door aan te raken, creëren we relaties van nabijheid waardoor we uit onze omgeving treden. In toenemende mate worden onze aanrakingen echter beïnvloed door technologieën die de manier waarop we onszelf en anderen waarnemen, veranderen. In Hands Made van Begüm Erciyas spelen de handen van het publiek de hoofdrol. Begeleid door een soundtrack observeren de toeschouwers hun hand en die van hun buur, wat tegelijk een effect van intimiteit en vervreemding tot stand brengt. Geïsoleerd van de rest van het lichaam worden onze handen het middelpunt van een reflectie over handwerk en tastzin. Waar zijn deze handen mee bezig geweest, en wie of wat zullen ze in de toekomst aanraken? Nothing But Fingers is een performance van beeldend kunstenaar Moe Satt. Hij raakte gefascineerd door de rol van handgebaren in Zuid-Afrikaanse jachtcommunicatie en in traditionele dans in Myanmar en Zuidoost-Azië, waarbij menselijke gebaren dierlijke vormen kunnen aannemen. Samen met danseres Liah Frank onderzoekt hij hun expressieve potentieel en vermogen om energiestromen in het lichaam te sturen. Een bijzondere choreografie waarin de handen de rest van het lichaam dicteren, tot de finale overgave.

Halfway between kings and queens, between activism and entertainment, between laughter and anger, they practice a form of drag that evolves with the issues in their daily lives. They offer a version of the story to their liking, without excuse and purely subjective, far from the ambient heteronormativity. Sarah Bekambo Sarah Bekambo, a creative talent from Leuven, has made her mark in the Spoken Word scene as both a performer and a writer. She thrives in hip-hop culture, from breaking to MC’ing, and has also excelled as a curator and event organizer. Her infectious enthusiasm and passion for culture make her a dynamic host, captivating audiences with her energy and presence. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, Sarah knows how to turn any event into a memorable experience.
