Double bill: Pak Yan Lau, Giovanni Di Domenico & JAB + Roxane Métayer

The world première of trio Di Domenico, Lau & Bennett new album 'Tidal Perspectives' which will be released on 14 June in a limited edition of 300 LPs by Editions Basilic.Recorded across a single afternoon in Brussels, Belgium, the album’s four parts are a rippling alchemy of processed Rhodes piano, sizzling ceramics, and liquified bass flute, a rare meeting of three unique voices from the contemporary music landscape that manages to flow with the effortless inevitability of the oceanic tides.Giovanni Di Domenico, an accomplished composer and prolific collaborator who has released albums with Jim O’Rourke, Eiko Ishibashi and Akira Sakata, among many others, initiated the collaboration with Bennett after the two met at a record fair in Saint-Gilles and bonded over a shared inquisitiveness for unconventional sonic combinations. Along with Pak Yan Lau, a Belgian-born sound artist and improviser who has developed her own rich and unique sonic footprint, the trio entered the studio with little, if any, discussion beforehand, jumping right into playing without preconceived structures. The resulting recordings had a depth of sound and emotional resonance surprising even them, with finished pieces emerging from single live takes and minor edits. Bennett, known for his solo work as well as his collaborations with Christina Vantzou as CV & JAB, gives us here a taste of his bass flute in free flowing form. Unconstricted by concept, joyfully and lazily bouncing off the melodic shimmers of Di Domenico’s Rhodes, Bennett uses his flute’s pitch information to trigger long tones that emerge like rays of light piercing through low hanging clouds - moments of clarity among a clicking world of sonic stimuli. Meanwhile, Lau’s crackling and sometimes dissonant contributions on prepared piano, live hydrophone, and custom ceramic sound objects balance out the triangle, adding a sense of microcosmic intrigue that allows the music to seamlessly ebb and flow between moments of comfort and foggy uncertainty. Roxane Métayer is a french musician and artist based in Brussels. Het trio Di Domenico, Lau & Bennett brengt in wereldperemière hun nieuwe album ‘Tidal Perspectives’ die op 14 juni verschijnt in een gelimiteerde oplage van 300 LP's bij Editions Basilic.De vier delen van het album, die op één middag in Brussel werden opgenomen in Brussel zijn een kabbelende alchemie van bewerkte Rhodes piano, sissend keramiek en vloeibare basfluit, een zeldzame ontmoeting van drie unieke stemmen uit het hedendaagse muzieklandschap.Giovanni Di Domenico, die we naast zijn vele eigen releases kennen van samenwerkingen met o.a. Jim O'Rourke, Eiko Ishibashi en Akira Sakata, initieerde de samenwerking met Bennett nadat de twee elkaar ontmoetten op een platenbeurs in Sint-Gillis en een band kregen door een gedeelde nieuwsgierigheid naar onconventionele sonische combinaties. Samen met Pak Yan Lau, een in België geboren geluidskunstenaar en improvisator die haar eigen rijke en unieke sonische voetafdruk heeft ontwikkeld, ging het trio de studio in met weinig of geen afspraken vooraf te maken. De resulterende opnames hadden een diepte aan geluid en emotionele resonantie die zelfs hen verraste. Bennett, bekend van zowel zijn solowerk als zijn samenwerking met Christina Vantzou als CV & JAB, geeft ons hier een voorproefje van zijn basfluit in vrije vloeiende vorm. Niet gehinderd door een concept, vrolijk en lui stuiterend op de melodische glinsteringen van Di Domenico's Rhodes, gebruikt Bennett de toonhoogte-informatie van zijn fluit om lange tonen op te wekken die tevoorschijn komen als lichtstralen die door laaghangende wolken heen priemen - momenten van helderheid in een klikkende wereld van sonische prikkels. Ondertussen zorgen Lau's knisperende en soms dissonante bijdragen op geprepareerde piano, live hydrofoon en op maat gemaakte keramische geluidsobjecten voor een balans in de triangel. Ze voegen een gevoel van microkosmische intrige toe die de muziek naadloos laat ebben en vloeien tussen momenten van comfort en mistige onzekerheid.Roxane Métayer is een Franse muzikante en kunstenares uit Brussel. Haar project houdt het midden tussen folk en experimentele muziek en bestaat uit geluidsopnames gemaakt in de natuur, viool, blaasinstrumenten, percussie en haar eigen stem.Haar albums zijn uitgebracht door Kraak, Morc, Primordial Void, Wabi-Sabi tapes, Marionnette Label en Matière Mémoir.Voor aanvang van deze albumpresentatie is er de boekvoorstelling van Fanny Chiarello's ‘Basta Now, women, trans & non-binary in experimental music’ (zie de AB agenda voor meer info)
