The combination "Brussels" and "bel canto" may seem strange at first glance,
because Brussels is not Italy, after all. Yet there is indeed a strong link
between Italian singing and the capital of Belgium. The fact that the Spanish
singer Maria Malibran, with the Belgian violinist De Bériot, spent her happiest
years in Ixelles is fairly well known, but that the music collection of
Rossini's first wife, the legendary Isabella Colbran, is kept in Brussels is
less well known. Moreover, both singers not only sang, but also composed. Reason
enough, therefore, to put their music, say their Brussels music collection, in
the limelight.
The programme will consist of songs and arias by La Malibran and La Colbran that
were sung or composed by them.
Two compositions will be performed for the first time in this concert.
The first one is a cantata that Colbran composed for her father's birthday. Or
rather: wanted to compose, as the work did not get fully finished. The
manuscript has been in the Library of the Brussels Conservatories since 1913 and
now, more than a hundred years later, the cantata has been reconstructed as part
of this recital. So you can attend the creation of a work written around 1823 in
2023.
Tradition cannot exist without innovation. Inspired by the tradition of bel
canto, Belgian composer Petra Vermote has composed a new work. It is for mezzo,
horn and piano, exactly the same scoring as the cantata written by Michael Balfe
for Malibran in 1836. The title is "Rossinia'na" and is thus a tribute to
Italy's greatest bel canto composer.
The music of this recital is in dialogue with images. Manon De Sutter is a young
filmmaker. She has taken photographs and film footage of the Colbrana and
Malibrana in Brussels and has it mixed with her own visual material. This is
projected during the concert and shows how she experiences and feels the Italian
singing tradition.

car Bruxelles n'est pas l'Italie. Pourtant, il existe bel et bien un lien étroit
entre le chant italien et la capitale de la Belgique. On sait que la chanteuse
espagnole Maria Malibran a passé ses plus belles années à Ixelles avec le
violoniste belge De Bériot, mais moins connu est le fait que la collection de
musique de la première femme de Rossini, la légendaire Isabella Colbran, est
conservée à Bruxelles. En outre, les deux chanteurs ont non seulement chanté,
mais aussi composé. Une raison suffisante, donc, pour mettre en lumière leur
musique, c'est-à-dire leur collection musicale bruxelloise.
Le programme se compose de chansons et d'airs de la Malibran et de la Colbran
qui ont été chantées ou composées par elles.
Deux compositions seront interprétées pour la première fois lors de ce concert.

dans le cadre de ce récital. Vous pourrez donc assister en 2023 à la création

De combinatie "Brussel" en "belcanto" lijkt op het eerste gezicht misschien
vreemd, want Brussel ligt nu eenmaal niet Italië. Maar toch is er wel degelijk
een stevige band tussen de Italiaanse zangkunst en de hoofdstad van België. Dat
de Spaanse zangeres Maria Malibran met de Belgische violist De Bériot, haar
meest gelukkige jaren doorbracht in Elsene is vrij bekend, maar dat de
muziekcollectie van de eerste echtgenote van Rossini, de legendarische Isabella
Colbran, in Brussel bewaard wordt, is minder bekend. Bovendien hebben beide
zangeressen niet alleen gezongen, maar ook gecomponeerd. Redenen genoeg dus om
hun muziek, zeg maar hun Brusselse muziekcollectie, voor het voetlicht te
brengen.
Dit gebeurt op zaterdag 14 oktober. Liederen en aria's van La Malibran en La
Colbran, door hen gezongen of gecomponeerd.
Er worden twee composities voor het eerst uitgevoerd in dit concert.
De eerste is een cantate die Colbran gecomponeerd heeft voor de verjaardag van
haar vader. Of beter: wou componeren, want het werk is niet volledig afgewerkt
geraakt. Het handschrift ligt al sinds 1913 in de Bibliotheek van de Brusselse
Conservatoria en nu, meer dan honderd jaar later, is de cantate in het kader van
dit recital gereconstrueerd. U kunt dus in 2023 de creatie bijwonen van een werk
dat rond 1823 geschreven is.
Traditie kan niet zonder vernieuwing. Geïnspireerd door de traditie van het
belcanto heeft de Vlaamse componiste Petra Vermote een nieuw werk gecomponeerd.
De bezetting is voor mezzo, hoorn en piano, precies dezelfde bezetting als de
cantate die Michael Balfe in 1836 geschreven heeft voor Malibran. De titel is
"Rossinia'na" en is dus een eerbetoon aan de grootste Italiaanse belcanto
componist.
De muziek van dit recital gaat in dialoog met beelden. Manon De Sutter is een
jonge cineaste. Zij heeft foto's en filmbeelden gemaakt van de Colbrana en
Malibrana in Brussel en laat deze vermengen met haar eigen beeldmateriaal. Dit
wordt geprojecteerd tijdens het concert en toont hoe zij de Italiaanse
zangtraditie ervaart en aanvoelt.
