Dedicatio I (Defoort)

Dedicatio I (2005-2006) is a piano cycle by Kris Defoort, written for and at the request of Jan Michiels. Each time the composer had committed one of the pieces to paper, he would leave it in the letterbox of his fellow pianist, who would then phone him to say what he thought of it. This two-year process of trial and error resulted in a collection of a total of nine ‘musical letters’, which Kris Defoort dedicated to people who are particularly important to him.

Now that The Time of Our Singing is returning to La Monnaie, Jan Michiels is revisiting this key work in his career, which knits together jazz and classical, light song culture and lively impressionism. In three of his Préludes, he illustrates the strong affinity he senses between the cycle and the work of Claude Debussy. He also references passages from On an overgrown path by Leoš Janáček and a sublime page of Chopin.

Dedicatio I (2005-2006) est un cycle d’œuvres pour piano de Kris Defoort, écrit pour et à la demande de Jan Michiels. Chaque fois que le compositeur terminait une pièce de ce cycle, il le déposait dans la boîte aux lettres de son collègue pianiste, qui lui partageait ensuite ses impressions. Cette méthode de tâtonnements, qui dura deux ans, a donné naissance à une collection de neuf lettres musicales, chacune étant dédiée à des personnes proches du compositeur.

À l’occasion du retour de The Time of Our Singing à la Monnaie, Jan Michiels reprend cette œuvre qu’il a si souvent interprétée au cours de sa carrière, un mariage singulier de jazz et de musique classique, de pop culture et d’impressionnisme. Il mettra en lumière les affinités du cycle Dedicatio avec l’œuvre de Claude Debussy en interprétant trois préludes du compositeur français, ainsi que des extraits de Sur un sentier recouvert de Leoš Janáček et d’une sublime pièce de Chopin.

Dedicatio I (2005-2006) is een pianocyclus van Kris Defoort, geschreven voor en op vraag van Jan Michiels. Telkens wanneer de componist er een nummer uit klaar had, stak hij het in het postvakje van zijn collega-pianist, die hem vervolgens opbelde om te zeggen wat hij ervan vond. Uit dit tweejarige proces van ‘trial and error’ groeide een verzameling van in totaal negen muzikale brieven, die Kris Defoort opdroeg aan mensen die hem na aan het hart liggen.

Nu The Time of Our Singing terugkeert naar de Munt neemt Jan Michiels dit sleutelwerk uit zijn carrière, een unieke vervlechting van jazz en klassiek, van lichte songcultuur en vif impressionisme, opnieuw ter hand. Dat de cyclus naar zijn gevoel een sterke verwantschap heeft met het werk van Claude Debussy, illustreert hij met drie van diens préludes, naast fragmenten uit Op een overwoekerd pad van Leoš Janáček en een sublieme pagina Chopin.
