Diagonals on Conceptual Art

Art and mathematics have always enjoyed an intimate relationship, as illustrated by the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Béla Bartók, Bernar Venet, Roman Opalka, Manfred Mohr, Ryoji Ikeda, Hollis Frampton, Shigeru Onishi and many others. Since the 1960s, however, this relationship has begun to weaken, and a certain distance has appeared between these two domains of human creativity. Tombroff takes us on a journey to discover the reasons for this bifurcation between art and mathematics in the postmodern era and identifies a prime suspect: infinity. For this investigation, he draws on the work of philosopher Alain Badiou, and in particular on the concept of inaesthetics, a novel approach that challenges the conventional notion of aesthetics that Badiou introduced to account for the specific yet universal nature of art’s truths.

Art et mathématiques entretiennent depuis toujours une relation intime comme en témoignent les œuvres de Léonard de Vinci, Béla Bartók, Bernar Venet, Roman Opalka, Manfred Mohr, Ryoji Ikeda, Hollis Frampton, Shigeru Onishi et bien d’autres. On remarque cependant que depuis le milieu des années soixante cette relation montre des signes d’affaiblissement et qu’une certaine distance s’est installée entre ces deux champs de la création. Tombroff nous emmène à la découverte des raisons de cette bifurcation entre art et mathématiques à l’ère postmoderne, et identifie un suspect principal : l’infini. Il s’appuie pour cette enquête sur la pensée du philosophe Alain Badiou, et en particulier sur le concept d’inesthétique, nouage original entre art et pensée que ce dernier a introduit pour rendre compte de la spécificité et de l’universalité des vérités dans l’art.
