To the tones of countertenor and MM Laureate Logan Lopez Gonzalez, Igor Shyshko explores the limits of body and mind in a dance opera. How do we free ourselves from the yoke we impose on our bodies? And is spiritual enlightenment, once achieved, dream or reality? 

Ever since that first bite in the forbidden apple, we have no longer gone through life in a state of ignorance, unashamed of our bodies. Virtually all religions and ideologies have subjected our physical shell to strict rules, restrictions and rituals. We deny it food, lash it, exhaust it, whether in acts of penance, cleansing or initiation. We immerse it in water, sing, dance, cover it up or reveal it … In search of a state of bliss or to forget the inanity of human existence? 

But what if we were to look at the body differently? As the vehicle that puts us in touch with a deeper and different form of consciousness, separate from any worldly phenomenon. What if we seek enlightenment within ourselves? This is exactly what Malus aims for. From his experiences as a yogi, Igor Shyshko tries to break through the logic of seeing and being seen. His body struggles, works and repeats to remain empty. To recreate his own ‘dream reality’ in the space between music and song, light and sculpture. Malus, with the soothing vocal lines of Logan Lopez Gonzalez and in a musical dramaturgy by Alain Franco, is not so much a commentary on our time as it is a meditation.

Le danseur Igor Shyshko sonde, sur la voix du contre-ténor et MM Laureate Logan Lopez Gonzalez, les limites du corps et de l’esprit dans un opéra dansé. Comment nous libérer du carcan que nous imposons à notre corps ? Et l’éveil spirituel, une fois atteint, est-il rêve ou réalité ? Depuis la première bouchée du fruit défendu, l’être humain ne vit plus dans l’ignorance et son corps n’évolue plus dans l’impudeur. À peu près toutes les religions et toutes les idéologies ont soumis notre enveloppe charnelle à des règles strictes, des restrictions et des rites. Nous le privons de nourriture, le tourmentons, l’exténuons, sous prétexte de pénitence, de purification ou d’initiation. Nous l’immergeons dans l’eau, chantons, dansons, le cachons ou le dévoilons… Dans l’espoir d’un état de béatitude ou pour oublier l’insignifiance de l’existence humaine ?

Et si nous considérions le corps autrement ? Comme le véhicule qui nous met en contact avec une forme autre, plus profonde, de conscience, indépendante de tout phénomène du monde matériel ? Et si nous recherchions la lumière à l’intérieur de nous-même ? C’est exactement le but que poursuit Igor Shyshko avec Malus. Se fondant sur son expérience de yogi, il tente de rompre la logique du voir et de l’être vu. Son corps se débat, travaille et répète pour rester vide. Pour recréer sa propre « réalité rêvée » dans l’espace entre la musique et le chant, la lumière et la sculpture. Malus, soutenu par le chant apaisant de Logan Lopez Gonzalez et une dramaturgie musicale d’Alain Franco, n’est pas tant un commentaire qu’une méditation sur notre temps.

Op de tonen van contratenor en MM Laureate Logan Lopez Gonzalez tast Igor Shyshko de limieten van lichaam en geest af in een dansopera. Hoe bevrijden we onszelf van het juk dat we ons lichaam opleggen? En is spirituele verlichting, eens bereikt, droom of realiteit? 

Sinds de eerste hap van de verboden appel gaat de mens niet langer onwetend en zijn lichaam niet langer schaamteloos door het leven. Vrijwel alle religies en ideologieën hebben ons lichamelijk omhulsel onderworpen aan strenge regels, restricties en rituelen. We ontzeggen het voedsel, geselen het, putten het uit, als boetedoening, reiniging of initiatie. We dompelen het onder in water, zingen, dansen, verhullen of onthullen het… En dat allemaal op zoek naar een zaligmakende staat. Of om de onbenulligheid van het menselijke bestaan te vergeten? 

Maar wat als we het lichaam anders bekijken? Als het vehikel dat ons in contact brengt met een diepere en andere vorm van bewustzijn, die losstaat van elk werelds fenomeen. Wat als we binnen onszelf op zoek gaan naar verlichting? Precies dat is de inzet van Malus. Vanuit zijn ervaringen als yogi probeert Igor Shyshko de logica van het zien en gezien worden te doorbreken. Zijn lichaam worstelt, werkt en herhaalt om leeg te blijven. Drijvend op de zanglijnen van Logan Lopez Gonzalez, maakt hij van Malus niet zozeer een commentaar als wel een meditatie op onze tijd.
