MONUMENT 0.10: The Living Monument

Choreographer Eszter Salamon uses a broad range of formats and expressions when she explores contemporary themes. The Living Monument is built on still life, slowness and the presence of the body. The production is a part of Salamon’s MONUMENT-series which since 2014 has explored how monuments can conserve our memories and create spaces of liberation and inclusivity – this is the fundamental idea behind Salamon’s inquisitive contemporary choreography.   The Living Monument begins in a black landscape inhabited by creatures dressed in glittering materials and creaking leather. The performance then slowly moves into new colour schemes where the audience can relive their own visual memories and create their own images. Each tableau is bound together by Carmen Villain’s dynamic score which floats over the stage and boosts the experience.   In the performance, a world based on colour and slowed movement is created. In a magnificent scenography the audience is taken on a meditative journey through vibrant tableaux in a dreamlike universe where time almost stands still. The Living Monument invites the audience to slow down and immerse themselves in the sensory impressions and figures that appear in the endless landscapes on the scene. • Eszter Salamon lives and works in Berlin and Paris. She is currently a PhD Research Fellow at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. She won the Evens Art Prize 2019 and La vie bonne call for projects by the National Center for Plastic Arts (FR) and Aware: Archive of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions in 2020. Salamon’s productions have been shown at institutions and festivals such as MoMa in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Julidans in Amsterdam, Tanzquartier in Vienna, Festival d’Avignon and Tanz im August in Berlin.

The Living Monument est construit sur la nature morte, la lenteur et la présence du corps. La production fait partie de la série MONUMENT de Salamon qui, depuis 2014, explore la façon dont les monuments peuvent conserver nos souvenirs et générer des espaces de libération et d'inclusion - il s’agit là du principe fondamental qui sous-tend la chorégraphie contemporaine interrogatrice de Salamon.   The Living Monument débute dans un paysage noir habité par des créatures vêtues de matériaux scintillants et de cuir qui craque. Le spectacle évolue ensuite lentement vers de nouvelles combinaisons de couleurs où le public peut revivre ses propres souvenirs visuels et créer ses propres images. Chaque tableau est lié par la partition dynamique de Carmen Villain qui flotte au-dessus de la scène et renforce l'expérience.   Un monde basé sur la couleur et le mouvement lent est créé au fil de la performance. À travers une superbe scénographie, le public est emmené dans un voyage méditatif par des tableaux vibrants dans un univers onirique où le temps est quasiment à l’arrêt. The Living Monument  invite le public à ralentir et à s'immerger dans les impressions sensorielles et les figures qui apparaissent dans les paysages infinis de la scène. • Eszter Salamon vit et travaille à Berlin et à Paris. Elle est actuellement chercheuse doctorante à l'Académie nationale des arts d'Oslo. Choreografe Eszter Salamon gebruikt een breed scala aan vormen en uitdrukkingen wanneer ze hedendaagse thema's verkent. The Living Monument is gebaseerd op stillevens, traagheid en de aanwezigheid van het lichaam. De productie maakt deel uit van Salamons MONUMENT-serie waarin ze sinds 2014 onderzoekt hoe monumenten onze herinneringen kunnen bewaren en ruimtes van bevrijding en inclusiviteit kunnen creëren. Dit is het fundamentele idee achter Salamons onderzoekende, hedendaagse choreografie. The Living Monument begint in een zwart landschap dat wordt bewoond door wezens gekleed in glinsterende materialen en krakend leer. De voorstelling gaat dan langzaam over in nieuwe kleurenschema's waar het publiek hun eigen visuele herinneringen kan herbeleven en hun eigen beelden kan creëren. Elk tafereel wordt samengebonden door de dynamische score van Carmen Villain die over het podium zweeft en de ervaring versterkt.    In de voorstelling wordt een wereld gecreëerd die gebaseerd is op kleur en vertraagde beweging. In een prachtige scenografie wordt het publiek meegenomen op een meditatieve reis door levendige tableaus in een droomwereld waar de tijd bijna stilstaat. The Living Monument nodigt het publiek uit om te vertragen en op te gaan in de zintuiglijke indrukken en figuren die verschijnen in de eindeloze landschappen op het toneel.• Eszter Salamon woont en werkt in Berlijn en Parijs.
