With his first solo exhibition in Belgium, Hsu Che-Yu presents a series of
objects and works that together form an original landscape on the idea of
mourning. The impressive triptych Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises takes
centre stage, consisting of three of his latest video works and as many stories
about loss. Zoo Hypothesis recounts the animal-to-animal mourning ritual created
by zookeepers who trained animals to kneel and perform gestures of worship to
commemorate animals that have died due to warfare. In Blank Photograph, the
memories of a terrorist bomber are juxtaposed with his brother's suicide in the
family home, presenting death as a tension between the individual and the
collective. Finally, Gray Room is a tribute to the artist's deceased
grandmother, recalling the experience of bodily perception in her house while
contemplating death and memory from a material perspective. To produce his video
works, Che-Yu works with the 3D scanning technique also used by the Taiwanese
police to collect forensic evidence, identify fragmented or decomposing bodies
and examine crime scenes. Multiple exercises in mourning that explore the
representations, constructions and alienations of memory and death as an
intimate event. A breathtaking experience.

l’impressionnant triptyque Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises.

rouw. Het indrukwekkende drieluik Three Episodes of Mourning Exercises staat
adembenemende ervaring.
MOELLE
Description
********** English **********
Moelle is a performance that stems from a search for body behaviors, dealing with the relationship to the back, to pain first and foremost, but also to the absurdity of the movements it makes the artist make.
It's a body presented in all its fragility, effort and stubbornness, a performance that raises the question of the body as a place of negotiation, exhaustion and strangeness.
The back is introduced as the driving force behind gestures and intentions, but also as a producer of readings. A reading of space through the face of the back. Pain motivates movement here: it's because the back is in pain that it moves, that it stretches. As it stretches, it generates noise, sound, the sound a back would make. What sound does it make when it's crushed, when it turns, when it's marrowy?
Moelle is a wandering performance that disturbs ears and poeticizes gesticulations.
Sound mocks image.
It's the vertebral column taking the back for a fool. It's a stratagem.

Nacera Belaza is known for her meticulous, minimalist and mesmerising

Le Cercle (2019) and L’Onde (2021), she uncovered these research principles

on the other, the rhythm digging into time, lifting up bodies to grant them a
dazzling freedom. Combined, the confrontation becomes a ritual practice opening
up to a perpetual motion, a loophole to infinity. In this unique experience, the
audience surrounds the dancers to contain their incredible energy. Not to be

‘Die Kunst der Fuge occupies an almost mythical place in the oeuvre of Johann
Sebastian Bach. Not only on account of its vast scope and impenetrability, but
also because Bach worked on it until his death, which gives the listener the
impression that this is his musical testament.’
— Bernard Foccroulle
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her exploration of Johann Sebastian Bach’s
oeuvre with the work that, in a sense, is the pinnacle of his life’s work: Die
Kunst der Fuge. The remarkable thing about this cycle of eighteen canons and
fugues, performed live by Bernard Foccroulle on the organ of the Cathedral of St
Michael and St Gudula, is the exceptional power of imagination that emanates
from what is ultimately a minimum of musical material: the first theme consists
of only twelve notes, spread over four measures.
The choreography, developed with Radouan Mriziga, starts out from the same
principle by working on four lines and in the intermediate space. In addition,
the choreography is also inspired by the circumstances in which Bach composed
Die Kunst der Fuge. He worked on this cycle until the end of his life, and the
final fugue, composed with the musical notes reflecting the letters of his
surname, was never finished. This incompleteness resonates forcefully with our
current sense of powerlessness as we face a global catastrophe, despite being at
the height of our powers.

The projects of Danh Vo –born in Vietnam and raised in Denmark– weave personal
intimacy into broader themes of history, power and memory. He takes objects
steeped in historical and design contexts and realigns them in his installations
and sculptures. Aestheticised in a new way, they amplify and transcend their
pasts. When invited to participate in this year’s festival, Vo put forth a
recently acquired 1970s Fiat hearse. He wished to repurpose the sleekly designed
vehicle, with its large windows and spacious interior, as a mobile flower shop
nomadically serving the people of Brussels. He collab- orated with young car
mechanics and electromechanics in training at a local school (Athénée Royal de
la Rive Gauche, Laeken) to collectively design the transformation of the hearse.
They worked together for months, taking art and floriculture courses, and
composing bouquets using plant and mechanical components. Two worlds that seemed
far apart now come together in this constant shift of meaning found at the
centre of Vo’s artistic practice. The result is a new aesthetic venture, a
visually iconic mobile sculpture circulating the city. Vo’s work is a complex
image of our society with multiple conflicting registers, a memento mori, a
chariot spreading beauty in the urban sphere.

mobiele bloemenwinkel.
