Just this once, the festival takes on an extra dimension. Kora Days 2024 will explore the connection between the kora and another well-known stringed instrument: the guitar. In addition, on this occasion, the great Toumani Diabaté honours us with an exceptional concert that unites him with the Orchestre National de Lille: a meeting between the kora and symphonic music that Toumani himself explored with the late Ali Farka Touré on their legendary album Ali et Toumani (2010). The full Kora Days programme will be announced later, but already save the date!

Une fois n’est pas coutume, le festival se dote d’une dimension supplémentaire. Les Kora Days 2024 exploreront le lien qui unit la kora à un autre instrument à cordes pincées très connu : la guitare. En plus, à cette occasion, l’immense Toumani Diabaté nous fait l’honneur d’un concert exceptionnel qui l’unira à l’Orchestre National de Lille : une rencontre entre la kora et la musique symphonique que Toumani a lui-même explorée avec feu Ali Farka Touré sur leur album légendaire Ali et Toumani (2010). Le programme complet des Kora Days sera annoncé ultérieurement, mais réservez déjà les dates !

Deze keer krijgt het festival een extra dimensie. Tijdens de Kora Days 2024 onderzoeken we namelijk het verband tussen de kora en een ander bekend tokkelinstrument: de gitaar. Bovendien zal de grootse Toumani Diabaté ons bij deze gelegenheid vereren met een uitzonderlijk concert samen met het Orchestre National de Lille. Een ontmoeting tussen de kora en de symfonische muziek die Toumani zelf heeft verkend met wijlen Ali Farka Touré op hun legendarische album Ali et Toumani (2010). Het volledige programma van de Kora Days wordt later bekendgemaakt, maar duid de data nu al aan in je agenda!

Oscillation ::: Materia Forma New Oscillation (https://www.oscillation-festival.be/) edition, new format ::: after online, nomadic and sedentary editions, we're in for six days of sound celebrations. The marathon edition? Those who have been following us for some time know that this range is not a try-out for the Q-O2 crew. Those concerned about physical effects, sleep deprivation, and sonic saturation? Don't worry, the evenings will be intense, but, concise. This year's edition is hosted by VK Vaartkapoen in Molenbeek, complemented with outings to B.A. in Anderlecht and the Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Molenbeek-Saint-Jean Church. The six days feature concerts, (in-situ) performances, a conference, round table conversations, walks, and a series of workshops. T This year, we reflect on form, format and performance. The self-evidence of an active performance linked to music has been altered with the ubiquity of electronic instruments and forms of amplification, which has also resulted in a larger variety of concert formats. Yet, absence of activity on stage does not equate to an absence of performance: objects might take that role, everyday events can be framed to perform themselves, sounds may exist as forms in themselves. Les Jazz au Marché sont de retour et pour ce premier rendez-vous de la saison, nous vous emmenons en Afrique de l'Ouest, avec l'excellent Zouratié Koné Ensemble, pour partager les rythmes et les chants du Burkina Faso, du Sénégal, de Côte d’Ivoire, du Niger, du Mali et de Guinée. Zouratié Koné, chanteur, musicien et fabriquant d’instruments de musique, est née à Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso et a vécu au Mali et en Côte d’Ivoire. Maître percussionniste issu d’une famille de Griots et éduqué dans une culture orale, ce musicien hors pair s’est approprié de multiples instruments de la tradition ouest-africaine :djembé, dundun, talking drum, longa, kora, ngoni, balafon. Ouverture de la terrasse dès 11:00 pour l'apéro et petite restauration, début du concert vers 13:00. TCHA LIMBERGER ( VIOLIN), RENÉ BIKAR ( BRÁCS), VILMOS CSIKOS ( DOUBLE BASS) Tcha’s trio of Budapest musicians causes a sensation, with bursts of soaring musical tragedy and czardas madness delivered with an astounding purity of sound and hardly imaginable depth of musical dialogue. In true Budapest gypsy style they switch between soaring intensity and smouldering pathos delivering a passion and technical virtuosity that astounds. MAGYAR NÓTA is music actually composed by the Hungarian nobility, to liven up their noble feasts and parties. They were looking in the 19th century for Hungarian music, that had to be less primitive than the traditional Hungarian music, which was only played by the illiterate peasants. So they invented a new style, based on elements of Hungarian folk music, both textual and melodic-harmonic, all played with a classical Western European sound. They hired gypsy musicians to come and live with them at the castles, where they should learn to play violin, double bass, clarinet and cimbalom in a classical way. Then they should make the new repertoire into one of the most highly regarded forms of popular music. ‘I myself started to learn that style because the Sinti, Gypsies from western Europe, including my own family, very much look up to, and love, this Hungarian music. Manouche and Sinti used to copy that style, but without the necessary know-how and especially without the Hungarian language, which one needs very much to be able to interpret that style well. This is why I started to learn Hungarian at the age of 20 and spent a year and a half in Budapest to master this music. I then founded the Tcha Limberger's Budapest Orchestra. For this concert we speak of the Budapest Ensemble, since it consists of not more than three musicians. ********** Français ********** Née d'une famille cosmopolite, Joe Bel a grandi en voyageant entre les Alpes françaises, la mer Méditerranée et l'Amérique du Nord. Elle développa un amour pour la musique dès son plus jeune âge après avoir été bercée par les vinyles de Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Otis Redding, ainsi que les chants traditionnels judéo-espagnols chers à la famille. Instinctive et autodidacte, Joe fait ses tous premiers pas sur scène seule à la guitare en 2012, juste après la naissance de son premier enfant, à l’âge de 23 ans. Quelques mois plus tard, Asaf Avidan découvre sa soul folk envoûtante et lui offre toutes les premières parties de sa tournée européenne. Son EP remarqué, « Hit the Roads », lui a permis de se produire à travers l'Europe et jusqu'au Japon. En 2020, attendant son deuxième enfant, elle se lance dans l’écriture de son deuxième opus, « Family Tree » : une exploration à la recherche de ses origines multiples, alliant folk, mélodies entêtantes et couleurs méditerranéennes. À travers un son toujours organique, en anglais et en français, mais également en ladino, ancien espagnol que parlait encore son grand-père, elle choisit de se dévoiler un peu plus, dans un album qui invite au voyage de la transmission entre les générations. ********** Nederlands ********** Joe Bel werd geboren in een kosmopolitische familie, en groeide op terwijl ze reisde tussen de Franse Alpen, de Middellandse Zee en Noord-Amerika. Al op jonge leeftijd ontwikkelde ze een liefde voor muziek. Ze werd geraakt door de platen van Paul McCartney, George Harrison en Otis Redding, maar evenzeer door de traditionele Joods-Spaanse liederen die haar familie dierbaar zijn. In 2012, op 23-jarige leeftijd, zette ze haar eerste stappen op het podium, solo en met enkel haar gitaar als begeleiding. Enkele maanden later ontdekte Asaf Avidan haar beklijvende folk soul, en bood haar prompt alle support slots aan op zijn Europese tour. Haar veelgeprezen EP ‘Hit the Roads’ bracht haar ondertussen door heel Europa en zelfs Japan, en in 2020 begon ze te schrijven aan ‘Family Tree’, een plaat waarop ze haar meervoudige afkomst exploreert. Het album is een geweldige combinatie van folk, onstuimige melodieën en mediterrane kleuren, waarop ze zingt in het Engels en het Frans, maar ook in het Ladino, het oude Spaans dat nog steeds door haar grootvader wordt gesproken. ‘Family Tree’ is intergenerationeel, en heeft voor iedereen wel wat te bieden.

Nicolas Delaigue is a sitar and surbahar player, specialist of north indian classical music. After years of immersion, practice and dedication to this art, he was able to create a bridge between India and the West, and become a reference in the interpretation and teaching of this music in Europe. Nicolas has learned sitar and hindustani classical music with Patrick Moutal, Indrajit Banerjee and have received additionnal training with Sugato and Ustad Shahid Parvez. Today, as a international concert performer, Nicolas have presented his music in many prestigious venues in Europe and around the world. Nicolas teaches sitar, Indian music and modal improvisation in numerous public, private and associative structures throughout France and Europe. In 2022, he was appointed professor of Indian Music and modal improvisation at the National Conservatory of Paris (CNSMDP). An All India Radio Grade A Artist, Sandip Banerjee is playing tabla since 1973. He is well known for his graceful accompaniment and powerful adept solo performance. He is an enlisted artist in ICCR( Indian Council for Cultural Relation) in professional category and SPIC MACAY. He has several CDs with different artists in India and abroad. His book on learning Tabla titled ‘Le Tabla’ has been published from ID Music, France. This book is also available in English now. A rare combination of talent, dedication and good sensibilities have brought Sandip to the top of his art. In the first part, attendees will enjoy the soulful melodies of German Lieder by F. Mendelssohn and Brahms, accompanied by a piano interlude with music by R. Schumann. This first part evokes the freshness of the season, with a recurring theme of flowers and the awakening of spring. In the second part, the audience will experience the captivating opera duets of Tchaikovsky, Delibes, and Offenbach. Inspired by the work of Cuban poet and essayist Nicolás Guillén, this theme emphasises the importance of integrating Afro-Cubans into a diverse society while fighting against imperialism and neocolonialism. This year, the festival takes place over three days in two Brussels venues: Bozar (25/05) and BRASS (01/06 & 02/06). The programme includes concerts, a conference, video mapping, a performance, theatre for young audiences and a dance workshop. During the three days, you can also tune in to What is Hip! Une folk aventureuse entre réinterprétation de chansons intemporelles et sentiment de plénitudeChanteur et multi-instrumentiste (banjo, guitare, violon) originaire du Vermont et aujourd'hui basé à Londres, Sam Amidon présente un catalogue de sept albums, sortis du Bedroom Community et Nonesuch Records. Au menu : des ballades folks aventureuses, aussi paradoxales que réconfortantes. Son dernier projet en date, « Sam Amidon », explore sa vision artistique à travers des réarrangements musicaux de 9 chansons folks intemporelles.Amidon et son groupe, habituellement composé du multi-instrumentiste Shahzad Ismaily et du batteur Chris Vatalaro, ont été rejoints en studio par le guitariste belge Bert Cools ainsi que par l'épouse du chanteur, Beth Orton, qui ajoute du chant sur trois chansons. La bassiste acoustique Ruth Goller et le saxophoniste Sam Gendel jouent également sur l'album.Née en Italie, Marta Del Grandi est une auteure-compositrice-interprète éclectique et ex-chanteuse de jazz qui rassemble des influences de tous horizons afin de tisser son propre mélange de genres.

"Ta Mavra Moura" is a three-piece band from Athens, Greece. While their repertoire is centered around Greek folk music of the twentieth century like the styles of rebetiko and laiko, their sound also touches upon more traditional flavors and even expands into modern areas like the compositions of Manos Hatzidakis and Nikos Xydakis. The band consists of bouzouki and guitar which is the basis of the urban folk sound of Athens during era of Rebetiko. A unique element of their music is the use of flute that while being unusual in such an orchestra, blends in perfectly and opens new horizons to their sound. Meanwhile, their three voices singing solo or in harmony complete their musical imagery.
